THE WORLD WHERE HANNAH WAS TRAPPED

The clock struck midnight.

The hospital suddenly felt different.

Too quiet.

Too still.

Even the familiar beeping of machines sounded distant, as though Room 407 itself had become disconnected from reality.

Richard Hale stood beside Noah outside the hospital chapel.

Rain poured across the empty parking lot.

Lightning flashed overhead.

Noah looked up at him with unsettling calm.

“You have to trust me.”

Richard stared at the boy.

“Trust you?”

“You’re a homeless child who broke into a hospital and somehow knows things no one should know.”

Noah nodded.

“That’s true.”

“And yet…”

He looked directly into Richard’s eyes.

“I’m the only person who can take you to her.”

Richard hesitated.

Everything about this situation defied logic.

Yet every piece of evidence pointed toward one impossible truth.

Noah was connected to Hannah.

Somehow.

Somewhere.

In ways science couldn’t explain.

Noah reached into his pocket and pulled out a small object.

A silver bell.

Old.

Worn.

Its surface scratched by time.

Richard frowned.

“What is that?”

“My mother gave it to me.”

“Why?”

“She said if I ever got lost between worlds, I could find my way home.”

Richard almost laughed.

But he couldn’t.

Because Noah wasn’t joking.

Not even a little.

“Sit down,” Noah said.

“Close your eyes.”

Richard hesitated.

“This is insane.”

Noah nodded.

“Yes.”

“Saving Hannah will be insane.”

“But losing her forever will be worse.”

Richard slowly sat down on one of the chapel benches.

Noah stood in front of him.

“Think about her.”

Richard closed his eyes.

Immediately memories flooded his mind.

Hannah’s first steps.

Her laughter.

Her birthday parties.

Her tiny hand holding his finger.

Her voice saying…

“Daddy, promise you’ll never leave me.”

Richard felt tears forming.

Then…

The bell rang.

Ding.

Everything vanished.

…

Darkness.

Infinite darkness.

Then…

Light.

Richard opened his eyes.

He wasn’t in the hospital anymore.

He stood inside a massive field.

Golden grass stretched endlessly beneath a purple sky.

The air shimmered strangely.

Far away stood a giant city made entirely of floating lights.

Children ran everywhere.

Laughing.

Playing.

But something felt wrong.

Their laughter sounded incomplete.

Echoing.

As if they were only half there.

Richard turned around.

Noah stood beside him.

“We’re here.”

“Where is this?”

“The Between.”

Richard stared.

“What does that mean?”

Noah pointed upward.

“This is where lost minds go.”

Richard’s heart raced.

“Lost minds?”

“People who aren’t dead.”

“People who aren’t awake.”

“People stuck in between.”

Richard felt his entire world collapsing.

“Where’s Hannah?”

Noah pointed toward the glowing city.

“She’s there.”

“But we have a problem.”

“What?”

Noah’s face grew serious.

“She doesn’t know how to leave anymore.”

…

They walked toward the city.

As they approached, Richard noticed thousands of doors floating in the air.

Some were open.

Some were locked.

Some were disappearing.

“What are those?”

“Memories.”

Richard swallowed.

“Everyone has doors?”

Noah nodded.

“If too many disappear…”

“You forget who you are.”

Richard froze.

“How many has Hannah lost?”

Noah didn’t answer immediately.

Then…

“Too many.”

Richard began running.

Panic overtook him.

“HANNAH!”

“HANNAH!”

Suddenly…

A small voice echoed.

“Daddy?”

Richard stopped.

His eyes widened.

She stood twenty feet away.

Nine years old.

Healthy.

Smiling.

Exactly as he remembered.

He ran toward her.

But Noah grabbed his arm.

“Wait.”

Richard turned.

“What are you doing?”

Noah whispered.

“That’s not her.”

Immediately the girl’s smile vanished.

Then…

Her face changed.

Twisted.

Distorted.

Her eyes became empty black holes.

Her voice deepened unnaturally.

“She almost believed it.”

Richard stumbled backward in horror.

The creature grinned.

Then dissolved into smoke.

“What was that?”

Noah looked uncomfortable.

“They live here too.”

“Who?”

“The Keepers.”

Richard shivered.

“What do they want?”

“People who stop fighting.”

“People who forget home.”

…

They finally entered the glowing city.

Richard immediately noticed something terrifying.

Thousands of children sat silently everywhere.

Some stared into space.

Some repeated the same words over and over.

One little boy kept saying…

“My mom is coming.”

Another whispered…

“My dog is waiting.”

A little girl simply hugged a stuffed rabbit endlessly.

Richard felt tears welling up.

“How many?”

Noah answered quietly.

“Too many.”

Richard looked around.

“Can they all leave?”

Noah’s face darkened.

“No.”

“Some stay too long.”

Richard felt sick.

“Then what happens?”

“They become part of this place.”

Before Richard could respond…

A scream pierced the air.

“HANNAH!”

Noah instantly ran.

Richard followed.

They arrived at a giant clock tower.

At the top…

Hannah stood trembling.

Surrounded by shadows.

Dozens of them.

The Keepers.

Tall.

Faceless.

Terrifying.

Their voices merged together.

“She’s forgetting…”

“She’s forgetting…”

“She’s forgetting…”

Hannah cried.

“I’m trying!”

One Keeper touched her forehead.

Instantly another memory disappeared.

Richard saw it vanish into smoke.

Hannah’s fifth birthday.

Gone.

“No!”

Richard screamed.

He ran forward.

But invisible walls stopped him.

Noah shouted.

“Use your memories!”

“What?”

“Memories are stronger than fear!”

Richard closed his eyes.

Then shouted.

“You love strawberry pancakes!”

The shadows recoiled.

“You hate math homework!”

Another shadow disappeared.

“You sleep with your lamp on because scary movies frighten you!”

More shadows evaporated.

Hannah looked up.

Her eyes widened.

“Daddy?”

Richard smiled.

“Yes.”

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

“Daddy…”

The Keepers shrieked.

“NO!”

They lunged toward Hannah.

Suddenly Noah stepped forward.

“Leave her alone.”

The shadows froze.

Every single one turned toward Noah.

Then something horrifying happened.

They all bowed.

Richard’s blood ran cold.

The Keepers spoke together.

“The Walker has returned.”

Richard stared.

“Noah…”

The boy looked terrified.

One Keeper stepped closer.

“You belong here.”

Noah shook his head.

“No.”

“You chose him once.”

“No.”

“You chose humanity.”

“No.”

Richard grabbed Noah.

“What are they talking about?”

Noah remained silent.

The shadows laughed.

Then one answered.

“He was one of us.”

Richard froze.

“What?”

Noah’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.”

The Keepers circled them.

“Years ago…”

“He died.”

“He chose to return.”

“But every return has a price.”

Richard stared at him.

“What price?”

Noah whispered.

“My memories.”

Richard suddenly understood.

Every year.

Every month.

Noah forgot more about himself.

He was slowly disappearing.

His sacrifice allowed him to guide trapped souls home.

But one day…

He would vanish forever.

Richard’s heart broke.

“You’ve been doing this alone?”

Noah nodded.

“For years.”

“Why?”

“Because nobody should be abandoned.”

Richard suddenly realized something.

This child…

Who had no family…

No house…

No safety…

Spent every day saving strangers.

And nobody knew.

…

The sky suddenly cracked.

The city shook violently.

Noah looked up.

“Oh no.”

“What?”

“The machines.”

Back in the hospital…

Doctors had increased Hannah’s sedation.

The world around them began collapsing.

Buildings shattered.

Doors exploded.

Children screamed everywhere.

Noah panicked.

“They’re pulling her deeper.”

Richard grabbed Hannah.

“What do we do?”

Noah’s face turned pale.

“There’s only one way now.”

“What?”

“You have to stop the machines.”

“But if they’re keeping her alive…”

“They’re also keeping her trapped.”

Richard hesitated.

Every instinct fought against the idea.

Yet now he understood.

The machines were helping her body.

But imprisoning her mind.

Thunder exploded overhead.

The Keepers roared.

“You cannot take her!”

Richard held Hannah tightly.

“Watch me.”

Noah suddenly shoved both of them backward.

A giant shadow crashed where they had stood.

“GO!”

Richard grabbed Hannah’s hand.

The world around them started dissolving.

Noah remained behind.

The Keepers surrounded him.

Richard screamed.

“NOAH!”

Noah smiled softly.

“It’s okay.”

“You found her.”

Richard shook his head violently.

“No!”

“You’re coming too.”

Noah’s smile faded.

“Maybe this is where my journey ends.”

The Keepers advanced.

Darkness swallowed the city.

Then Noah shouted one final sentence.

“Richard…”

“Promise me…”

“If I wake up…”

“Don’t let me be alone anymore.”

The world exploded into white light.

Richard gasped.

His eyes snapped open.

He was back inside Room 407.

Sweat covered his face.

Doctors rushed around him.

Monitors screamed.

Alarms blared.

Hannah’s heart rate was changing.

For the first time in weeks.

Richard looked around frantically.

No Noah.

No chapel.

No bell.

Nothing.

Then he looked out the window.

A police car sat outside.

And inside…

Was Noah.

Handcuffed.

Terrified.

Alone.

Richard’s heart shattered.

Because he now understood something much bigger than saving Hannah.

Noah had spent years saving everyone else.

But no one had ever saved Noah.

And this time…

May you like

Richard Hale was going to change that forever.
