Chapter 5: The Sanctuary of the Lemon Trees

Chapter 5: The Sanctuary of the Lemon Trees
One year later, the Morelli villa in Naples was bathed in the spectacular, golden light of a late summer morning. The white gravel driveway was pristine, free of dust, and the tall cypress trees along the eastern wall swayed gently in a warm Mediterranean breeze. The heavy wrought-iron gates stood open, but they were no longer a entry point for assassins; they were a boundary for a sanctuary.

Vittorio Morelli sat on a white wrought-iron chair on the eastern terrace, wearing a casual linen shirt, his Patek Philippe watch catching the sunlight. He was no longer looking at his phone with the frantic, paranoid urgency of a mafia don. He was sipping an espresso, his face relaxed, the deep lines around his eyes softened by a year of genuine security.
Down in the garden below, the lemon trees were heavy with bright, ripe fruit. Renzo stood on a wooden ladder, his shears clicking rhythmically as he trimmed the upper branches, his uniform clean and professional. He looked healthy, his posture straight, the director of logistics enjoying a quiet morning in the place he loved most.
Near the base of the ladder, eight-year-old Sophia sat on the low stone wall. She was wearing a beautiful gray sundress, her short brown hair neatly brushed, her gray eyes as serious and sharp as ever. Beside her on the grass sat her shiny gray bicycle, its chrome handlebars gleaming.
Vittorio stood up, picked up a small plate containing two freshly baked cannolis, and walked down the terrace steps onto the lawn. His leather loafers sank softly into the green moss—a sensation he had learned to appreciate.

He walked over to the stone wall and placed the plate beside Sophia. “A reward for the logistics department,” Vittorio said, his voice warm.
Sophia looked up, a rare, beautiful smile breaking across her serious face. “Thank you, Don Vittorio.”
“How are the cars looking this morning, Sophia?” Vittorio asked, leaning back against the stone wall beside her, looking out toward the driveway where a single, unblemished black sedan sat idling.
“The plates are correct,” she said, taking a small bite of the cannoli. “And Enzo keeps his keys in his left pocket today. He didn't forget.”
Enzo had been found alive a year ago, locked in a safehouse in Pompeii after refusing to cooperate with Alessio’s coup. He had been restored to his position immediately, his loyalty rewarded with an absolute devotion from the family.
Vittorio looked down at the little girl who had rewritten the fate of the Neapolitan underworld with a single observation. The traitors were gone—Alessio and Isabella had been delivered to Palermo, their names never spoken again within the city limits. The syndicates were quiet, the routes were secure, and the Morelli name was respected not just for its violence, but for its absolute, unshakeable justice.

Renzo climbed down from the ladder, wiping his brow with a clean handkerchief—the same linen handkerchief Vittorio had given him a year ago. He walked over, bowing his head respectfully to the boss.
“The perimeter is clear, Don Vittorio,” Renzo reported, his voice steady and proud. “The afternoon shipments from Palermo are on schedule. You have nothing to worry about today.”
Vittorio nodded, reaching out to gently pat Sophia’s shoulder. “I know, Renzo. I have the best eyes in Italy protecting this house.”

He walked back up the terrace steps, looking out at the sprawling, beautiful city of Naples stretching toward the blue horizon of the sea. The empire was strong, the family was clean, and the future was entirely theirs. Vittorio Morelli had spent his whole life breaking rules to survive, but as he looked down at the gardener and his daughter laughing beneath the lemon trees, he knew he had finally found the one rule worth keeping: look after the people who watch your back when you aren't looking.
The sun rose higher into the Italian sky, warming the ancient stones of the villa, and for the first time in his life, the most feared man in Naples felt completely, beautifully safe.
