Chapter 3: Shadows in the Boardroom

By the third week of Kai’s daily visits, the Vance Estate had transformed. The suffocating silence was gone, replaced by the experimental, echoing notes of wooden flutes, steel drums, and the continuous musical dialogue between the street boy and the billionaire's daughter. Clara’s cheeks had regained their color, and she had even begun to join the family dinner table, using rhythmic finger taps on the table to communicate basic needs.

But while the mansion found its rhythm, a storm was brewing within Vance Corporation.

"This is madness, Arthur!" Dr. Charles Harrison, the chief medical officer of Vance Corp and a long-time family advisor, slammed a folder onto the boardroom table. "You've allowed an unregistered, uneducated vagrant from the slums to manipulate your daughter. He’s not treating her; he’s conditioning her like an animal!"

Arthur sat at the head of the long mahogany table, his face exhausted. "She’s smiling, Charles. She’s engaging with the world. None of your European specialists managed that in half a decade."

"It’s a parlor trick!" Harrison hissed, his eyes flashing with a hidden malice. Harrison had been receiving massive research grants from Vance Corp to study Clara's condition—grants that would vanish the moment she was cured by a street boy. "My team has done a background check on this 'Kai.' His real name is Kai Jenkins. His mother died in the same municipal hospital where Clara was treated after her accident. He blames the wealthy elite for the lack of medical funding in his district. He doesn't want to cure Clara, Arthur. He’s positioning himself to extort you, or worse, humiliate the Vance family on a public stage."

Arthur’s eyes narrowed. The old corporate paranoia, the survival instinct that had made him a billionaire, reawakened. "Are you sure about his background?"

"See for yourself," Harrison said, sliding a police record across the table. It showed a teenage Kai, arrested for busking without a permit and minor altercations with transit police. "He’s a disruptor. Tomorrow is the annual Vance Gala. He’s requested that Clara attend and perform a musical piece with him. If she fails in front of your investors, or if he uses that platform to expose your family's private tragedy, Vance Corp stock will plunge twenty percent by Monday morning."

Arthur stared at the photo of the young Kai. Doubts began to corrupt his hope.

That evening, when Kai arrived at the service entrance as usual, he was met not by the friendly butler, but by four armed security guards and a cold, clinical Dr. Harrison.

"Your services are no longer required, Mr. Jenkins," Harrison said, tossing a thick white envelope onto the pavement at Kai's feet. "Inside is fifty thousand dollars for your time. The reward contract is void due to a failure to produce vocal articulation. You are banned from the property effective immediately."

Kai didn't look at the envelope. He looked past Harrison toward the upper balcony, where Clara’s window was dark. "She’s close, Doctor. She’s right on the edge of breaking through the trauma. If you pull the plug now, she’ll lock herself away forever."

"Get off the property," Harrison ordered, signaling the guards.

Kai stepped back into the rain, his denim jacket soaking through. He didn't take the money. He picked up his wooden box, his eyes burning with a promise that no corporate security force could ever contain.
