Chapter 4: A Father's Final Plan

Chapter 4: A Father's Final Plan

The library remained silent.

Ethan stared at the yellowed letter in his hands, reading the opening sentence again and again.

"If you are reading this, then I succeeded in bringing the two of you together..."

His father had written those words years before Ethan had ever met Emily.

Nothing about it made sense.

Emily looked equally bewildered.

"I've never met your father before our wedding."

Richard Lawson nodded.

"That's what we all believed."

He gently motioned for Ethan to continue reading.

"Ethan," the letter began.

"You have always believed that great leaders are judged by intelligence and strength. I once believed the same. Then, ten years ago, I met a little girl who taught me otherwise."

Ethan frowned.

The next lines made his heart stop.

"Her name was Emily Harper."

Emily covered her mouth.

"I don't understand..."

Richard smiled sadly.

"I think I do."

Ten years earlier...

Charles Carter had quietly funded a scholarship program for underprivileged children.

Unlike many wealthy businessmen, he often visited the schools himself without informing the media.

One rainy afternoon, while touring a small community art center, he had suffered a sudden dizzy spell.

The staff panicked.

Most people froze.

Only one teenager rushed forward.

Emily.

She had been just fifteen years old.

Instead of recognizing the billionaire standing before her, she simply saw an older man who needed help.

She gave him her chair.

Fetched water.

Called an ambulance.

Then stayed beside him until his assistant arrived.

When Charles thanked her and offered a generous reward, she politely refused.

"I only did what anyone should do."

Those words stayed with him.

Charles quietly followed Emily's progress over the years.

Not to interfere.

Simply to help from a distance.

Whenever tuition became difficult, anonymous scholarships appeared.

Whenever the community art center struggled financially, unexpected donations arrived.

Emily never knew where the money came from.

Charles made certain she never would.

He wanted her kindness to remain genuine.

Years later, Ethan returned from graduate school overseas.

Charles immediately noticed something unusual.

His son had become successful.

Confident.

Brilliant.

But emotionally distant.

He cared about profits more than people.

Charles feared the family empire was changing him.

So he remembered the young woman who had once helped a stranger without expecting anything in return.

Emily.

"I didn't arrange your marriage," the letter continued.

"I simply arranged for your paths to cross."

Richard explained.

"Charles sponsored the children's hospital fundraiser where the two of you first met."

Emily's eyes widened.

"The charity auction..."

Richard nodded.

"That wasn't coincidence."

Ethan remembered that evening perfectly.

Emily had been painting portraits for children as a volunteer.

One little boy accidentally spilled paint across Ethan's expensive suit.

The room fell silent.

Everyone expected Emily to apologize.

Instead...

She comforted the frightened child first.

Only afterward did she turn to Ethan.

"I'm sorry about your jacket."

Ethan had laughed.

"It's just a jacket."

That conversation lasted nearly an hour.

The rest became history.

Or so they had believed.

Victoria entered the story soon afterward.

According to Charles's letter, she immediately opposed the relationship.

"Victoria measures people by wealth and status," Charles had written.

"She will never understand why I believe Emily is exactly the daughter this family needs."

Emily lowered the letter slowly.

Tears filled her eyes.

"He believed in me."

Richard smiled warmly.

"He always did."

Detective Sarah Collins entered carrying another evidence folder.

"We've finished reviewing Charles's financial records."

She looked directly at Ethan.

"Your father secretly created an educational trust."

Emily frowned.

"For whom?"

Collins opened the file.

"The Emily Harper Arts Foundation."

Emily stared at her.

"My name?"

Richard wasn't surprised.

"Charles intended to establish free art programs for disadvantaged children after his retirement."

"He named it after Emily because, according to his notes..."

He smiled.

"...she reminded him that compassion creates stronger communities than money ever could."

Emily broke into tears.

She had spent years believing she wasn't worthy of the Carter family.

Now she was discovering that the family patriarch had believed she represented its future.

Across the mansion, Victoria sat in the study under police supervision.

Her attorney hurried inside holding his phone.

"The medical examiner called."

She looked up immediately.

"What did they find?"

He hesitated.

"They're expanding the investigation."

"That's not what I asked."

"The preserved blood samples showed abnormalities."

Victoria felt her pulse race.

"No..."

"The laboratory hasn't released a final report."

"But detectives now believe Charles's death may not have been entirely natural."

For the first time, genuine panic overwhelmed her.

Meanwhile, Martha quietly approached Detective Collins.

"I remembered something."

Collins immediately opened her notebook.

"The week before Mr. Charles died..."

Martha spoke carefully.

"I overheard an argument."

"Between whom?"

"Mr. Charles and Mrs. Victoria."

"What were they arguing about?"

Martha closed her eyes, replaying the memory.

"Mr. Charles kept saying..."

She took a deep breath.

"...'I won't let you destroy Ethan's future.'"

That statement sent investigators back to Charles's private office.

A forensic team carefully dismantled the antique oak desk that had remained untouched since his death.

Hours passed.

Nothing.

Then one technician noticed a loose wooden panel beneath the bottom drawer.

He removed it.

Inside lay a slim leather notebook.

Richard immediately recognized it.

"Charles's personal journal."

The final entries were written only days before his death.

Charles described growing concerns about unexplained financial transfers.

Missing legal documents.

Manipulated business meetings.

Then came one chilling sentence.

"If anything happens to me, Ethan must never face Victoria alone."

Detective Collins looked at Ethan.

"He was trying to protect you."

Later that evening, Ethan returned to the nursery.

Emily sat beside Sophie's crib, humming softly while their daughter slept.

For the first time in days, the room felt peaceful.

Ethan sat beside his wife.

"My father chose you long before I did."

Emily smiled through tears.

"No."

She took his hand.

"He simply recognized the same person you eventually fell in love with."

Ethan laughed quietly.

"That's probably true."

He leaned forward and kissed her forehead.

"I almost lost you because I refused to see what was happening."

"You see it now."

"I'll never look away again."

The next morning, an emergency meeting of Carter Holdings' Board of Directors convened at company headquarters.

News of the investigation had already shaken investors.

Some directors openly questioned whether Ethan was prepared to lead while his family faced scandal.

As the meeting began, one elderly board member quietly slid a sealed envelope across the table.

"It arrived from your father five years ago."

Ethan frowned.

"My father?"

"He instructed me to deliver it only if the company ever faced a crisis caused by someone within the family."

With dozens of executives watching, Ethan opened the envelope.

Inside was a signed document.

At the bottom appeared Charles Carter's unmistakable signature.

Above it, in bold letters, were words that stunned the entire boardroom:

SUCCESSION PROTOCOL: EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY UPON EVIDENCE OF INTERNAL BETRAYAL

As Ethan began reading, several board members slowly turned toward one another in disbelief.
