Chapter 1: The Shattered Picture

Chapter 1: The Shattered Picture

The sting of the slap echoed through the grand ballroom of the Beaumont Estate like a pistol shot. For a fraction of a second, the ambient murmur of string quartets and elite chatter died instantly. Victoria Beaumont stood over the young waitress, her chest heaving beneath her diamonds, her eyes wild with a venomous rage.

"You pathetic, scheming little rat!" Victoria screamed, her manicured finger pointing directly at the girl's face. "Did you honestly think I wouldn't notice you hovering around my husband all night? Spilling wine just to get his attention? Sweeping around his chair? Girls like you are a dime a dozen in this city—starving, desperate, looking for a rich man to crawl out of the gutters with!"

The waitress, whose name tag read Maya, was pressed against a towering marble pillar. Her cheek was a brilliant, burning crimson from the force of Victoria's hand. Tears spilled over her eyelashes, tracing clean paths through the light dust of kitchen flour on her skin. She didn't shout back. She didn't defend herself against the gasps of the high-society guests who immediately pulled away, wrapping their designer shawls tighter around themselves as if poverty were contagious.

"Victoria, that is enough," Charles Beaumont muttered, stepping forward. He was a man of immense influence, the billionaire patriarch of Beaumont Logistics, but tonight, his face looked unusually pale under the crystal chandeliers. "You're making a scene. She’s just a server."

"A server who wants your wallet, Charles!" Victoria hissed, turning her fury onto him. "Look at her! She’s been staring at you since the soup course!"

But Maya wasn't looking at Victoria. Through her blinding tears, her hands trembled violently as she reached into the small apron pocket of her black-and-white uniform. Her fingers locked onto something crisp and worn. With a ragged sob, she pulled it out, but her grip failed. The object slipped through her fingers and fluttered downward, landing face-up on the cold, polished white marble floor right at Charles Beaumont’s leather shoes.

It was a photograph. Faded, creased at the corners, and tinted with the warm, sepia tones of the late nineties.

Charles looked down carelessly at first, intending to kick it aside. But the moment his eyes caught the image, his entire body went rigid. The glass of vintage champagne in his hand slipped from his fingers, shattering into a thousand glittering shards against the floor.

The photograph showed a younger, laughing Charles, his arm wrapped tightly around a beautiful woman with the exact same striking, hazel eyes as the sobbing waitress standing before him. In the woman's arms was a tiny infant, wrapped in a hand-knitted pink blanket. On the back of the photo, visible through the water-damaged paper, were the words written in faded ink: Our beautiful Maya. Born in love. October 2008.

"Charles?" Victoria’s voice dropped from an angry shriek to a sharp, suspicious whisper. She looked at the broken glass, then at her husband’s frozen, ghostly face. "Charles, what is that? What are you looking at?"

Charles didn't answer his wife. He dropped to his knees right there on the wet marble, completely ignoring the champagne soaking into his bespoke trousers. His hands shook as he picked up the photograph, his eyes darting from the faded image of his first love to the terrified, bleeding face of the girl his wife had just humiliated.

"Evelyn..." Charles whispered, his voice cracking with a decade's worth of suppressed grief. He looked up at Maya, his breath catching in his throat. "Your mother... where is Evelyn?"

Maya wiped the blood from her lip where Victoria's diamond ring had cut her. "She died three months ago, Mr. Beaumont. In a state ward. Calling your name."
