Chapter 4: The Boardroom Exorcism

Chapter 4: The Boardroom Exorcism
At 8:00 AM the following morning, the executive boardroom of Sterling Global sat beneath a heavy cloud of corporate warfare. Lady Beatrice Sterling sat at the head of the table, flanked by Charles Vance and a team of six corporate defense attorneys. The remaining twelve board members sat in silence, looking nervously at the empty chair at the end of the table.
"It’s a simple vote of no confidence," Charles Vance stated, tossing a document onto the glass table. "Julian Sterling has demonstrated a complete lack of fiduciary responsibility. He abandoned a multi-billion-dollar merger at the altar for a highly publicized personal scandal. The Vance Group will only stabilize the logistics network if Beatrice is appointed as interim chairperson and Victoria is reinstated as the corporate liaison."
"The motion has been seconded," Lady Beatrice said, her voice cold and unyielding. "We will proceed to the roll call—"

The heavy mahogany double doors of the boardroom swung open with a loud, deliberate crash.
Julian stepped inside. He hadn't slept in twenty-four hours. His shirt was wrinkled, his jaw covered in dark stubble, but his presence was so overwhelming that three independent board members immediately stood up out of pure instinct. Behind him walked Marcus Vance—Charles Vance's estranged younger brother and the top forensic corporate attorney in the country.
"Sit down, Mother," Julian said, walking to the foot of the table, his hands resting flat against the polished wood as he leaned forward.
"Julian, you have no standing here," Charles Vance sneered, adjusting his gold tie clip. "The Vance Group has already pulled the eighty million dollars. The Sterling credit lines are failing. You are done."
"The Vance Group didn't pull eighty million dollars, Charles," Marcus Vance spoke up, opening a leather briefcase and sliding a series of digital financial printouts across the table to the board members. "Because at 6:00 AM today, the federal trade commission launched an investigation into the Vance media network for systematic insider trading and market manipulation."
Charles’s face drained of color. "What... what nonsense is this?"
"Three years ago, my mother and Charles Vance forged a medical release document to alienate Clara from my life," Julian explained, his voice calm, steady, and terrifyingly precise. "To pay for that forgery and the subsequent suppression of the story, Charles used a series of offshore shell companies funded directly by Sterling Global's infrastructure accounts—companies my mother authorized without board approval."
Julian clicked a small remote, and the massive projection screen on the wall displayed a clear, verified paper trail of bank routing numbers from the Cayman Islands directly to the Vance Group's private accounts.
"This isn't an emergency session to remove me, gentlemen," Julian said, looking at the twelve independent board members. "This is a criminal disclosure. If you vote with Charles Vance today, you will be listed as co-conspirators in a federal racketeering indictment by noon."
The independent board members looked at the documents, then at Charles Vance, whose hands had begun to shake violently. One by one, the board members pushed their chairs away from the table, distancing themselves from the head of the room.

"The board rejects the motion of no confidence," the senior independent director announced, his voice trembling. "Mr. Sterling, your executive authority is fully confirmed. Lady Beatrice... I suggest you retain council."
Julian walked over to his mother, looking down at the woman who had traded his happiness for a corporate logo. "The family estate in the Hamptons has been placed under a corporate lien, Mother. You have forty-eight hours to pack your clothes. You wanted a pure bloodline? You ended up with an empty house."
