Chapter 2: The Shadows of Thorne Industries

Chapter 2: The Shadows of Thorne Industries

By midnight, the atmosphere inside the precinct had shifted from standard operations to a full-scale tactical wartime footing. The Sterling family had been moved from the briefing room into a heavily guarded safe house deep within the structural basement of the federal building downtown, protected by a rotating shift of eight swat officers.
But Arthur Thorne's reach was long, and his pockets were deeper than the city's legal foundations.
Inside the penthouse suite of the Thorne Global Tower, forty stories above the glittering city skyline, Arthur Thorne stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, swirling a glass of neat bourbon. He was a man of impeccable presentation—impeccable silver hair, a tailored Italian tuxedo, and an aura of supreme, unshakeable arrogance.
The heavy mahogany doors of his office opened, and Victor Vance stepped inside. The massive enforcer’s right hand was heavily bandaged, but the dark, murderous glint in his eyes remained intact.
"We have a problem, Mr. Thorne," Victor said, his deep voice cutting through the soft classical music playing in the background. "Our inside source at the central precinct just sent an encrypted alert. A couple brought their two-year-old kid in tonight. The kid had the empty Phase III blister pack. She gave a full descriptive statement about the park, the vehicle, and the scar on my hand."
Thorne didn't turn around. He merely watched his reflection in the glass, his expression shifting from cold indifference to a sharp, predatory amusement. "A two-year-old child, Victor? You allowed a toddler to witness your face, retain the medical packaging, and walk into a police department? I pay you millions to ensure our logistical operations are flawless."
"The kid was supposed to be too terrified to speak! I threatened to slaughter her parents right in front of her if she breathed a word," Victor growled, his fists clenching. "But the kid cracked. She’s currently under federal protection. Sergeant James Vance is leading the charge. He’s already ordered a dive team to the harbor base."
Thorne took a slow sip of his bourbon, finally turning around to face his enforcer. "The dive team will find nothing. We moved Evelyn Vance from the harbor container to the abandoned water treatment facility in Sector 4 six hours ago. She has exactly twelve hours before the final dose of the compound causes permanent neurological termination. But the child... the child is a loose thread. In a court of law, a toddler's testimony is easily dismissed as manipulation by the police. But her presence creates momentum. It gives James Vance the narrative he needs to secure a federal warrant for my personal servers."
Thorne walked over to his grand desk, tapping a button on an encrypted satellite communications array. "Activate our assets within the department. I want the safe house coordinates. And Victor... do not sloppy this time. Erase the child, erase the parents, and ensure Sergeant Vance experiences a tragic, fatal accident while conducting his investigation."
"Consider it handled," Victor nodded, a sadistic smile spreading across his scarred face.
Back in the secure basement safe house, Clara Sterling was sitting on the edge of a military-grade cot, rocking a fast-asleep Lily in her arms. The little girl’s breathing was still hitched from hours of crying, her tiny fingers clutching her mother’s shirt as if letting go would mean falling into the dark again.
David Sterling walked over, holding two plastic cups of lukewarm coffee, his face etched with absolute exhaustion and terror. "Clara... what have we gotten into? We’re just ordinary people. I’m an accountant, you’re a teacher... how did our baby girl get caught in the middle of a billionaire's war?"
"She did the right thing, David," Clara whispered, her tears falling onto Lily’s forehead. "If she hadn't spoken up, she would have carried this horror in her heart for the rest of her life. It would have destroyed her from the inside out. We have to be strong for her. We have to trust Sergeant Vance."
Suddenly, the lights inside the safe house flickered violently, then died completely, plunging the concrete room into pitch-black darkness. The steady, reassuring hum of the ventilation system ground to a halt.
A split second later, the heavy electronic security lock on the reinforced steel door hissed, its red indicator light blinking green as the system override was triggered from the outside.
"David! Grab Lily!" Clara screamed, her maternal instincts instantly taking over as she lunged off the bed, shielding her daughter with her own body in the corner of the room.
Outside in the corridor, the distinct, suppressed thwip-thwip of automatic weapons shattered the silence. The two SWAT officers stationed directly outside the door collapsed to the floor with heavy, lifeless thuds.

The safe house door swung open, the hallway’s red emergency backup lights silhouetting a massive, terrifying figure standing in the frame. It was Victor Vance, his automatic rifle raised, the large red scar on his bandaged hand glowing like an open wound under the crimson light.
"Step away from the kid," Victor rasped, his weapon scanning the dark corners of the room. "And maybe I’ll let you die quick."
