Chapter 2: The Network of Betrayal

Chapter 2: The Network of Betrayal

Within twenty minutes, the quiet corridors of St. Catherine’s were fractured by the harsh, pulsing red and blue lights of unmarked police cruisers. Detective Marcus Vance, a seasoned investigator with a reputation for absolute discretion, stormed into Jonathan’s office, flanked by two armed officers.

"Show me the footage, Doc," Vance commanded, shaking the morning rain from his trench coat.

Jonathan played the tape. He pointed out the precise moments where Dr. Sterling harvested the samples and explained the biological impossibility of what the public assumed was a "miracle" or a "curse."

"It’s a black-market eugenics and inheritance scheme," Jonathan explained, his voice trembling with a mixture of fury and exhaustion. "Michael Reeves didn't just come from a family of firefighters. His maternal grandfather was Arthur Vance, the real estate tycoon who left a three-hundred-million-dollar trust. The stipulation of that trust is absolute: if Michael dies without a direct biological heir, the entire fortune reverts directly to his uncle, Thomas Reeves. But if Michael produces a child before his life support is terminated, the trust is held in a protected guardianship for that child."

Detective Vance whistled softly, his eyes narrowed as he watched Thomas Reeves on the screen. "So the uncle wanted the money. But why create five different pregnancies with five different nurses?"

Greed doesn't just steal; it clones its options to ensure it never loses.

"Because Dr. Sterling's experimental procedures have a high failure rate in early trimesters," Jonathan realized, the medical horror of it sickening him to his core. "Thomas didn't want to risk a miscarriage ruining his timeline. He wanted multiple baskets for his golden eggs. If all five nurses carried to term, he would legally claim guardianship of the children as their sole surviving great-uncle once Michael passed away, thereby securing total control over the three-hundred-million-dollar trust under the guise of family charity."

"And the nurses?" Vance asked, his jaw tight. "How did they manage to do this without them knowing?"

"Sedatives," Jonathan whispered, his mind flashing back to Laura Kane, the fifth nurse who had wept in his office. "They all worked the night shift. They all reported feeling unusually fatigued after their breaks, attributing it to burnout. Sterling must have been spiking the staff room coffee or the water dispenser with a short-acting, amnesiac sedative like Midazolam. They were violated while unconscious, right there in the staff rest quarters or the adjacent exam rooms, and woke up thinking they had just slept heavily."

"We need to move now," Vance said, drawing his weapon. "If Sterling or Reeves realizes the police are on the premises, they’ll destroy the lab records, and worse, they might terminate Michael to trigger the default clause of the trust."

As they rushed out of the office toward the elevator, the hospital’s fire alarm suddenly blared, a deafening, mechanical shriek that echoed through the concrete structure. The overhead sprinklers activated in the main lobby, creating a chaotic stampede of panicked patients and staff.

"They know," Jonathan shouted over the alarm. "The security mainframe just detected our local download of the vent camera!"

Jonathan didn't wait for the police. He broke into a sprint, taking the emergency stairs three at a time, heading straight for Room 312B. He had to protect Michael. He had to protect the only evidence of a truth that could save five innocent women and a boy who had sacrificed his life for the city.
