Chapter 4: The Fall of the Idols

Chapter 4: The Fall of the Idols

At the Vance mansion, breakfast was usually a quiet, highly formalized affair. Victoria Vance sat at the head of the long, polished mahogany table, her silk blouse immaculate, her diamond rings catching the morning light as she elegantly sliced through a poached egg. Across from her, Trevor sat slumped in his chair, his eyes dark with fatigue, his hand trembling slightly as he raised a cup of coffee to his lips.

"You look pathetic, Trevor," Victoria said, her voice cold, devoid of any maternal warmth. "Control yourself. The staff is watching."

"I can't sleep, Mother," Trevor hissed, leaning forward, his voice a panicked whisper. "Higgins hasn't called me back. He said he would confirm when the hospital declared her dead. It’s been hours. What if someone else gets to her? What if her mother finds out?"

Victoria set her fork down with a precise, terrifying clink against the porcelain. "Her mother is a nobody from Iowa who runs a tractor business, Trevor. Even if she finds out, what is she going to do? Sue us? Hire a local lawyer? We own the courts in this district. Stop acting like a frightened child. You corrected a disobedient wife who was threatening to ruin our family’s reputation with her emotional outbursts. The child she was carrying was a genetic liability anyway; she didn't have the breeding to carry the Vance name."

Before Trevor could respond, the heavy front doors of the mansion were suddenly blown inward with a deafening crash. The sound of splintering wood and shattering glass echoed through the grand foyer, followed instantly by the sharp, authoritative shouting of trained men.

"POLICE! STATE TACTICAL FORCE! HANDS IN THE AIR! DO NOT MOVE!"

Trevor leaped to his feet, knocking his coffee cup over, the dark liquid spilling across the white linen tablecloth like blood. "What the hell is happening?"

A dozen heavily armed tactical officers in black body armor poured into the dining room, their assault rifles raised, their laser sights painting bright red dots across Trevor’s chest and Victoria’s immaculate silk blouse. Leading the unit was a gruff, uncorruptible captain named Miller, a man who had spent ten years being suppressed by Chief Higgins’ corrupt administration.

"Trevor Vance! Victoria Vance! You are under arrest for attempted first-degree murder, felony assault, and domestic conspiracy," Captain Miller roared, stepping forward with heavy zip-ties.

"Are you insane?" Victoria screamed, her aristocratic composure finally shattering into an ugly, screeching rage as an officer grabbed her wrists, forcing her hands behind her back. "Do you know who I am? I am Victoria Vance! I sit on the board of the State Banking Commission! I will have your badges, your pensions, and your lives for this!"

"Save it for the magistrate, lady," the officer grunted, ruthlessly pulling her up from her chair. The diamond rings she prized so much scraped against the mahogany table as she was dragged away.

Trevor didn't fight. He fell to his knees, his face pale, his hands raised in surrender as Captain Miller pushed his head down onto the spilled coffee on the table, securing his wrists behind his back. "Mother... Mother, do something! Call Higgins! Call the governor!"

As they were dragged out through the ruined front porch—the very porch where the scent of my gasoline still lingered faintly in the damp air—they were met by a wall of flashing blue lights and a sea of television cameras. Marcus had done his job perfectly. Every major news network in the region was broadcasting live from the estate.

BREAKING NEWS: Monsters of the Mansion: Prominent Socialite Victoria Vance and Attorney Trevor Vance Arrested in Horrific Domestic Violence Plot. Sources confirm the victim, Brooke Vance, was found frozen and beaten near death at a municipal bus stop.

From the backseat of a black town car parked fifty yards down the street, I watched through tinted glass as my daughter’s tormentors were stuffed into the back of a dirty police transport van. Victoria’s perfect silver hair was ruined, tangled across her face, her expensive silk blouse stained with mud from the driveway. Trevor looked like a broken animal, weeping openly as the cameras captured his cowardice for the entire world to see.

My phone buzzed in my hand. It was Marcus.

"It’s a complete rout, Elena," Marcus reported, his voice filled with professional satisfaction. "The moment the news of the arrest broke, the State Banking Commission held an emergency session and stripped Victoria of her seat. Furthermore, the federal prosecutors have officially frozen all assets belonging to Vance Holdings. Trevor’s gambling creditors in Macau realized they will never see their money, and they’ve leaked his entire internal ledger to the press to save themselves from a federal conspiracy charge. They are completely, utterly bankrupt. They don't even have the funds to hire a private defense attorney. They will be represented by public defenders."

"Let them see what it feels like to have nothing," I said, my voice cold and calm. "What about the criminal charges?"

"With Chief Higgins turning state's evidence and providing the deleted surveillance footage, the DA is looking at a guaranteed life sentence without the possibility of parole for both of them," Marcus explained. "They are going to spend the rest of their natural lives in a maximum-security facility. They will never see the sun without a steel wire fence in front of it."

"Good," I said, leaning back against the leather seat. "Keep the pressure on, Marcus. Don't let them breathe until the judge signs the final sentencing order. I'm going back to the hospital. My daughter needs her mother."
