Chapter 3: The Price of Treason

Chapter 3: The Price of Treason

By 3:30 p.m., the atmosphere inside the federal courthouse downtown was thick with drama. Julian Thorne sat at the defense table, his white lab coat replaced by a dark, rumpled suit. His hair was messy, and the cocky, untouchable smirk he had worn that morning was beginning to fray at the edges.

Beside him stood Raymond Vance, an overweight man with sweat dripping down his temples, frantically shuffling through a stack of legal briefs.

"Your Honor," Raymond bellowed, his voice echoing through the crowded courtroom. "My client is a respected pillar of this community! He is a surgeon who saves lives daily! The prosecution's attempt to hold him without bail on mere administrative discrepancies is a grotesque abuse of federal power. We offer ten million dollars in real estate assets as collateral for his immediate release."

The judge, a man named Henderson who had received substantial campaign contributions from Julian’s charity gala for years, looked inclined to agree. He picked up his gavel, clearing his throat. "The court finds that the defendant does not pose an immediate flight risk, and given his professional standing—"

"Before the court rules, Your Honor," a powerful voice interrupted from the back of the room.

The heavy oak doors of the courtroom swung open, and Marcus Vance, the Attorney General, walked down the center aisle, flanked by two federal marshals carrying a heavy, sealed steel case.

The judge frowned, his hand stopping mid-air. "General Vance? This is an arraignment hearing. The state has no standing in a federal administrative case."

"The state has supreme standing when the charges are elevated to capital murder and corporate conspiracy, Your Honor," Marcus said, placing the steel case on the prosecution's table with a loud, metallic thud. He unlocked the case, pulling out a thick manila folder emblazoned with the official seal of the Vance & Sterling archives.

Julian stood up so fast his chair screeched against the floor. "What is the meaning of this? Raymond, stop him!"

Raymond Vance looked at the folder, his face turning an unhealthily dark shade of purple. He recognized the seal. He knew exactly what lived in the Vance archives—the legacy of absolute, unredacted truth that my husband had spent his life collecting.

"Your Honor," Marcus continued, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "Thirty minutes ago, our office received a verified forensic affidavit from Eleanor Vance, the sole trustee of the Vance Estate. Inside this file is the complete, unaltered digital footprint of an off-shore account managed by Dr. Julian Thorne and defense counsel Raymond Vance. Over the last four years, this account received over twelve million dollars from an international pharmaceutical supplier. In exchange, Dr. Thorne utilized non-approved, experimental drugs on terminal patients in St. Jude’s oncology ward, resulting in three premature deaths that were subsequently recorded as 'natural heart failure'—with falsified autopsy reports signed by Dr. Thorne himself."

The courtroom erupted into total chaos. Reporters scrambled for the doors, their phones buzzing with the breaking news that would destroy not just Julian, but the entire political circle that protected him.

Judge Henderson’s face went completely white. He looked at Julian, then at Raymond, realizing that any attempt to protect them now would drag him down into the same federal prison cell.

"Your Honor!" Raymond stammered, his hands shaking so violently he dropped his pen. "This... this evidence is unverified! It’s a breach of attorney-client privilege!"

"The evidence was obtained via a voluntary disclosure by the primary trustee of the estate that houses the server, Mr. Vance," Marcus countered coldly. "And given that you are now named as a co-conspirator in an active murder investigation, your license to practice law in this state has been suspended by emergency order of the Supreme Court as of five minutes ago. Marshals, take them both into custody."

Julian lost all control. He lunged across the defense table, his fingers clawing toward Marcus’s throat. "You ruined me! That old bitch ruined me! I’ll kill her! I’ll kill Chloe! I’ll kill all of you!"

The federal marshals slammed Julian onto the hard mahogany table, his face pressed against the wood as they pulled his arms behind his back, clicking a new, heavier set of irons around his wrists.

He wasn't a king anymore. He wasn't a respected doctor or a hospital director. He was just a cornered rat, screaming obscenities as he was dragged down the rear elevator into the depths of the federal holding facility—a place where his money, his smile, and his title meant absolutely nothing.
