Chapter 3: The General's Wrath

Chapter 3: The General's Wrath

The ruined lobby of the Grand Azure felt less like a luxury resort and more like a military tribunal. Within ten minutes of General Vance’s arrival, two tactical transport vehicles had cordoned off the perimeter. Elite soldiers in black tactical gear stood at every exit, their weapons held at parade rest. The wealthy guests had been ushered into a secure holding area, their complaints dying in their throats the moment they saw the military insignia on the General's collar.

Marcus was currently pinned against a cracked marble pillar by two massive soldiers. His expensive suit was torn, soaked in saltwater, and smelling of dead coral. The arrogance had completely drained from his face, replaced by a sweating, stammering terror.

General Vance didn't look at Marcus initially. He was on his knees in the shallow water, gently lifting his mother into his arms while a military medic immediately began treating her bruised shoulder. Lily clung to her father’s coat, her small body still shivering from fear.

“Daddy,” Lily whispered, pointing a trembling finger at Marcus. “We just wanted to get out of the rain. Grandma was tired. But that man... he said we were filthy. He kicked Grandma’s chair. He broke Great-Grandpa’s picture.”

General Vance’s shoulders went rigid. He slowly stood up, turning his gaze toward Marcus. The temperature in the flooded room seemed to drop below freezing.

“General... General Vance, sir!” Marcus stammered, his teeth chattering violently. “I... I had no idea! There was a misunderstanding! The protocol... the hotel protocol states that vagrants are not permitted—I was simply protecting the establishment’s security! If I had known she was your mother—”

“If she were just a regular eighty-year-old citizen, Marcus,” General Vance said, his voice deadly quiet as he walked over, his boots splashing in the water, “would it be acceptable to kick her out of her wheelchair?”

“No! I mean, yes—no, sir!” Marcus cried out, tears of terror mixing with the dirty saltwater on his face. “Please, I have a family! I was just following the directives of the corporate board! The CEO, Mr. Sterling, he demands absolute perfection in the lobby!”

General Vance stopped inches away from Marcus. He reached down into the wet debris and picked up the shattered silver frame. Inside, the photograph of the man in the military uniform was soaked, but the face was still clear. It was General Alexander Vance, a legendary war hero who had saved the city from destruction forty years ago, and the grandfather of the current General.

“This hotel,” General Vance said, holding up the ruined photograph, “stands on land that was gifted to my grandfather by the federal government for his service. The Sterling Group does not own this property, Marcus. They lease it from my family's foundation for a single dollar a year, under a strict covenant that this space must always serve the public honor.”

Marcus’s eyes widened until they looked ready to pop out of his skull. The realization that he had just assaulted the literal landlord of the entire multi-billion-dollar complex was too much for his mind to bear.

“Robert,” General Vance called out to his lead colonel. “Call the city building inspectors. Tell them the Grand Azure Hotel has suffered a catastrophic structural failure due to criminal negligence. Evacuate the tower. Shut down their operational license immediately.”

“Sir, please!” Marcus begged, dropping to his knees as the soldiers released their grip. “Mr. Sterling will ruin me! I’ll lose my pension! I’ll be blacklisted from the hospitality industry!”

“You aren't going back to the hospitality industry, Marcus,” General Vance said, turning his back on him. “You’re going to a military detention facility pending a civil assault charge against a protected veteran’s dependent. Take him away.”

As Marcus was dragged out screaming into the rain, the hotel's heavy glass doors opened again, and Arthur Sterling, the billionaire CEO of the Sterling Hospitality Group, rushed in, flanked by a team of frantic lawyers. He looked at the ruined fish tank, then at the soldiers, and finally at General Vance. He knew his entire empire was about to collapse.
