Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Gallery

The realization hit Vincent like a physical blow to the sternum. N. Ellery. Naomi.

He spun around, his eyes desperately scanning the crowded gallery floor until he located her again. She was moving gracefully between a pair of prominent European collectors, pointing toward a smaller canvas on the adjacent wall. The piece she was describing was a striking, suffocating composition of deep blues and suffocating blacks, depicting a massive, hyper-realistic dining table with two chairs placed at impossible distances from each other. In the center of the table sat a single, decaying silver teapot, its steam frozen into sharp, jagged icicles.

The title: Breakfast at 8:01.

Vincent felt a cold sweat break out along his collar. Every morning for five years, he had eaten breakfast at exactly 8:00 AM. He left the penthouse at 8:05 AM. He had never noticed what Naomi did after the elevator doors closed. He had assumed she read, or slept, or filled her days with the empty, expensive hobbies of traditional trophy wives. He had never once imagined that she was capturing the slow, agonizing death of their companionship with a paintbrush.

"This can't be happening," Khloe muttered, her face turning as pale as her silver dress. She pulled out her phone, her fingers flying across the screen as she searched the gallery’s digital catalog. "The art blogs... Vincent, look at this. The New York Times ran a blind feature on 'The Anonymous Realist' three days ago. They called her the most significant artistic discovery of the decade. Collectors have been bidding on these pieces blindly for six months. The entire collection is already sold out."

"Sold out?" Vincent repeated, his throat dry. "To whom?"

"Private institutions. The Met. The Tate. The Guggenheim," Khloe read, her voice shaking with an ugly mix of envy and panic. "And look at the estimated values. Some of these are hovering around seven figures. Vincent... your wife is a millionaire in her own right. She doesn't need your money."

That was the thought that broke through Vincent's carefully constructed armor. For months, he had justified his affair by telling himself that he was the provider, that Naomi was dependent on him, that his only obligation to her was financial. He had imagined a clean, quiet divorce where he would throw a few million dollars her way, buy out her share of the townhouse, and leave her to a comfortable, forgotten life while he conquered the world with Khloe by his side.

But Naomi hadn't been waiting for a settlement. She had been building a fortress out of his secrets.

"Ah, Vincent! There you are!"

Arthur Bellamy’s deep, theatrical voice boomed through the crowd as he approached, his arm casually linked through Naomi’s. The silver-haired patriarch of the art world looked at Vincent with a polite, razor-sharp smile that made it clear he knew exactly what kind of man he was dealing with.

"Mr. Bellamy," Vincent said, forcing his standard corporate authority into his voice, though it felt brittle. He didn't look at Naomi; he couldn't bring himself to meet her calm, dark eyes. "I didn't realize you were hosting an exhibition for my wife."

"Your wife?" Arthur chuckled, a sound that carried a dangerous undercurrent of mockery. "My dear man, Naomi is the sole reason Calder Modern is relevant this season. We don't think of her as your wife here, Vincent. If anything, we thought of you as the muse. Though, looking at the work, 'muse' might be too gentle a word. 'Architect of the pain' seems more accurate."

Khloe bristled, her vanity overcoming her fear. "Mr. Bellamy, I am Khloe Arden. Vincent and I—"

"I know who you are, Miss Arden," Arthur interrupted smoothly, his eyes raking over her borrowed diamonds with an expert’s disdain for a cheap copy. "And if you look to your left, you’ll find you've already been immortalized."
