Chapter 5 - The Stolen Ring

The transformation in Grace was remarkable, yet heartbreakingly slow.

When Ethan returned to the penthouse, she was sitting on the sofa, wearing a soft cream-colored sweater and jeans he had ordered from a boutique downstairs. Her hair was down, falling in soft waves around her shoulders, and her face was clean. But she still sat with her shoulders hunched, her hands clutched tightly in her lap as if she were trying to occupy as little space as possible.

When Ethan walked in and explained what had happened at the Metropolitan Club—and that her parents were currently being settled into a state-of-the-art private suite at the city's best hospital—she didn't scream or celebrate.

She simply stared at him, a profound, overwhelming shock washing over her face. Then, she buried her face in her hands and wept.

They were not the tears of grief she had cried in the hotel room. They were the tears of a prisoner who had suddenly been told the iron doors were open, yet whose legs were too weak to walk out into the sunlight.

Ethan sat beside her, pulling her into his arms, holding her close while her body shook with the release of seven years of accumulated terror. He kissed the top of her head, his hands rubbing her back, whispering sweet promises into her hair until her breathing finally leveled out.

"It’s over, Grace," he whispered. "I swear to you, it’s completely over. Julian Vance can never touch you again."

Grace raised her head, wiping her eyes with the sleeve of the sweater. She looked at him, her hazel eyes bright with an emotion that made him feel alive for the first time in a decade. "I don't know how to thank you, Ethan. I don't know how I’m ever going to repay you for this."

"Repay me?" Ethan chuckled softly, a genuine smile breaking across his handsome face. He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a small, worn leather pouch. "You already paid me, Grace. Seven years ago, in a kitchen on the South Side."

He opened the pouch and pulled out a small, cheap notebook—the very notebook he had carried to London. He flipped through the pages until he reached the back, where a single, small silver object was taped to the cardboard backing.

It was the modest diamond engagement ring he had given her by the lake.

Grace gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "You... you have it? But how? I thought... I thought it was lost when the collectors cleared out our apartment."

"It was," Ethan said gently, his fingers carefully peeling the tape away from the band. "Julian Vance’s father took it from your dad’s safe during the liquidation. When I bought out Apex Logistics this morning, I had Marcus search Julian’s private office vault. He found it sitting in a velvet box, marked as a collateral asset."

He took her left hand, his thumb gently smoothing over the old indentation on her ring finger—the mark left by the years she had spent wishing it was still there.

"It’s a little scratched, and it’s not a billionaire's ring, Grace," Ethan said, his voice trembling slightly with emotion. "But it’s the ring that carries my soul. Will you let me put it back where it belongs?"

Grace looked at the ring, then up at the man who had traveled across the world, built an empire, and torn down her monsters just to bring it back to her.

"Yes," she whispered, her voice a beautiful, clear bell in the quiet penthouse. "Yes, Ethan. A thousand times, yes."

He slid the ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly, a flawless circle of silver and light cutting through the shadows of their broken past.
