CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET OF THE LAKE HOUSE

The ballroom remained silent.

Not because of the affair anymore.

Not because of Vanessa.

Not because of the wedding ring lying abandoned on the table.

Everyone was staring at Ryan.

And Ryan looked terrified.

Not embarrassed.

Not guilty.

Terrified.

The difference mattered.

Because Evelyn had known her husband for ten years.

She knew every expression.

Every nervous habit.

Every lie.

And the man standing in front of her now looked like someone who had just seen a ghost.

"What lake house?" she repeated.

Ryan swallowed hard.

His mouth opened.

Then closed.

No answer.

The silence stretched.

One second.

Five seconds.

Ten.

Finally, Ryan's father stood up.

"Ryan."

His voice was cold.

"What is she talking about?"

Ryan looked away.

That alone was enough to send a wave of unease through the room.

Because Ryan Carter never looked away.

Not during business negotiations.

Not during board meetings.

Not during media interviews.

Yet now he couldn't meet his own father's eyes.

Evelyn stared at the flash drive in her hand.

The tiny device suddenly felt much heavier.

Much more dangerous.

"Maybe we should find out together."

She walked toward the large projector screen the hotel had been using earlier for photos and speeches.

Several guests instinctively moved aside.

Nobody tried stopping her.

Nobody even spoke.

The entire room was watching history unfold.

The Video Nobody Expected

The hotel technician inserted the flash drive.

A folder appeared.

Only one file.

No title.

No explanation.

Just a date.

Eight months earlier.

Evelyn clicked play.

The screen flickered.

Then an image appeared.

A security camera recording.

Black and white.

Grainy.

But clear enough.

A luxury lake house.

Beautiful.

Private.

Expensive.

Ryan immediately looked sick.

Evelyn's heart began racing.

Because she had never seen that property before.

Yet something felt familiar.

Very familiar.

Then she realized why.

The lake house had been purchased using money from one of their family investment accounts.

Money Ryan claimed had gone into a commercial development project.

The room grew quieter.

If that was even possible.

The video continued.

The timestamp rolled forward.

Then a black SUV entered the driveway.

The driver's door opened.

And Ryan stepped out.

A collective gasp swept across the ballroom.

But that wasn't the shocking part.

The passenger door opened next.

Vanessa emerged.

Holding Ryan's hand.

Several guests lowered their heads.

Others exchanged uncomfortable looks.

The affair was real.

Undeniable.

Recorded.

Permanent.

Ryan closed his eyes.

As though he wished the floor would open beneath him.

The Second Woman

The video continued.

Vanessa followed Ryan inside.

Then the recording skipped forward three hours.

The front door opened again.

Ryan came outside.

Alone.

But then another vehicle arrived.

A white sedan.

Someone stepped out.

A woman.

Not Vanessa.

Not Evelyn.

Someone else entirely.

The ballroom erupted.

"What?"

"There was another woman?"

"Impossible."

Evelyn felt all the blood drain from her face.

The woman approached Ryan.

He hugged her.

Kissed her cheek.

Then handed her a thick envelope.

The timestamp continued.

The woman left.

Ryan went back inside.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Because suddenly the affair wasn't the biggest problem anymore.

Now there was a mystery.

A second woman.

Secret meetings.

Money changing hands.

A hidden property.

And a husband who looked increasingly terrified.

The Financial Records

The next file opened automatically.

Spreadsheets.

Bank statements.

Transfer records.

Dozens of them.

The ballroom quickly realized this wasn't random information.

This was evidence.

Detailed evidence.

Pages and pages of it.

Evelyn stared at the numbers.

Then at Ryan.

Then back at the screen.

Her stomach twisted.

Because she recognized the account names.

Joint accounts.

Family accounts.

Trust accounts.

Money had been moving for months.

Large amounts.

Hundreds of thousands.

Then millions.

The guests began whispering.

Some of Ryan's business partners looked alarmed.

Very alarmed.

One elderly investor suddenly stood.

"Those are company funds."

The room froze.

Ryan's face became completely expressionless.

The reaction was almost worse than panic.

Because it meant he already knew.

The Message

Then the final video began.

Unlike the others, this one had been recorded directly on a phone.

A woman appeared on screen.

Middle-aged.

Elegant.

Unknown to everyone present.

She looked directly into the camera.

Then began speaking.

"My name is Claire Matthews."

Nobody reacted.

Until she continued.

"For twenty-two years, I worked as financial controller for Carter Development Group."

Now people paid attention.

Several executives instantly recognized the name.

Claire had disappeared six months earlier.

Officially she retired.

Unofficially, nobody knew what happened.

The woman looked tired.

Afraid.

But determined.

"If you're watching this, then I finally decided to tell the truth."

The ballroom became silent again.

Every eye fixed on the screen.

Claire took a deep breath.

Then spoke the sentence that changed everything.

"Ryan Carter has been stealing money from his own company."

Gasps exploded throughout the room.

Several guests stood.

Others cursed openly.

Ryan looked as though he might collapse.

But Claire wasn't finished.

Not even close.

The Real Betrayal

For ten minutes the video continued.

Every minute made things worse.

False invoices.

Shell companies.

Hidden properties.

Offshore accounts.

Secret transfers.

Years of deception.

Years.

Not months.

Not one mistake.

Not one bad decision.

Years.

Evelyn could barely process it.

The affair had shattered her heart.

But this?

This shattered reality itself.

Because the man she married had apparently been living two completely different lives.

The husband.

And the criminal.

Then Claire reached the end of her statement.

She looked directly into the camera.

Directly at Ryan.

And delivered one final revelation.

The revelation that made his father nearly collapse.

"There's one thing nobody knows."

The ballroom held its breath.

Claire continued.

"The lake house isn't where the money went."

Ryan shut his eyes.

As if he already knew what came next.

Claire spoke slowly.

Carefully.

"The lake house was only used to hide something."

The room went still.

Something?

What something?

The answer arrived seconds later.

And it hit harder than everything before it.

Claire looked into the camera.

Then said:

"Ryan didn't buy the property for his mistress."

A pause.

"He bought it because someone is living there."

Evelyn felt a chill run through her entire body.

Someone?

Who?

Claire swallowed.

Then revealed the truth.

"A child."

The ballroom erupted.

Absolute chaos.

People shouting.

Standing.

Arguing.

Crying.

Evelyn stood frozen.

Because she already knew.

Deep down.

Before Claire even finished speaking.

She somehow knew.

Then Claire delivered the final blow.

"The child is six years old."

Ryan lowered his head.

Defeated.

Broken.

Exposed.

And everyone in the room understood exactly what that meant.

The affair with Vanessa wasn't where this story began.

It wasn't even close.

The betrayal stretched back years.

Long before Evelyn became pregnant.

Long before anyone suspected anything.

And somewhere inside that lake house...

May you like

A child existed whose very existence could destroy everything Ryan Carter had built.
