Chapter 7 - The Midnight Ambush

By the time Robert sprinted through the ambulance bay of Mercy Creek Medical Center, the clock read 8:30 AM. He had changed into a spare set of clean green scrubs he kept in his vehicle’s trunk. His hair was still damp, his skin pale, but his eyes burned with a terrifying, absolute focus.

He didn't take the main elevators. He took the secure service lift directly to the executive VIP wing on the fourth floor.

The hallway was quiet, the morning shift change currently underway. As he approached the corner leading to Joanna’s room, his medical instincts warned him that something was wrong. The air was too still. The usual murmurs of the nursing staff were absent.

He rounded the corner and froze.

The police officer who had been stationed outside Joanna’s door was slumped over in his chair, his head lolling back, a dark pool of blood expanding across the front of his uniform. He had been shot with a silenced weapon, executed silently in the middle of the corridor.

Robert’s heart leaped into his throat. He lunged forward, pushing open the door to Joanna’s room.

"Joanna!" he gasped.

The room was empty. The sheets on the bed were torn and disheveled, a plastic baby bassinet overturned on the floor. Joanna and the baby were gone.

"Looking for this?" a voice sneered from behind him.

Robert turned slowly. Standing in the doorway was the bald thug with the broken jaw from the day before, his face covered in heavy surgical bandages, holding a suppressed pistol. Next to him stood another armed man, dragging a bound and gagged Joanna by her hair. She was crying silently, her eyes wide with terror, her arms empty.

Marcus Vance stood right behind them, holding the newborn baby in his arms with a casual, terrifying negligence.

"You're like a cockroach, Dr. Wright," Marcus said, looking at Robert with genuine surprise. "You actually survived that lake. Incredible. But your luck ends here."

"Where is the baby's medicine, Marcus?" Robert asked, his voice suddenly dropping into a tone of eerie, clinical calm. He didn't scream, he didn't panic—he operated.

Marcus frowned, looking down at the infant in his arms. "What are you talking about?"

"The child was born early," Robert lied smoothly, taking a slow, calculated step forward, his eyes locking onto Marcus’s posture. "He has severe neonatal respiratory distress syndrome. Look at his skin—it's developing a cyanotic blue tint around the lips. If he doesn't receive an immediate injection of surfactant in the next two minutes, his lungs will collapse, and he will suffocate in your arms. Is that what you want? A dead child is useless leverage."

Marcus glanced down at the baby’s face, his composure wavering for a fraction of a second. He wasn't a doctor; he didn't know that the baby’s breathing was perfectly healthy. The medical jargon and Robert’s absolute authority shook his confidence.

"Fix it," Marcus barked, holding the baby out toward Robert. "But make one wrong move, and my man puts a bullet through the girl’s head."

Robert stepped forward, his hands raised, his mind calculating the exact trajectories. The moment his hands touched the baby’s blanket, he didn't draw a syringe—he spun his body, using his own torso to shield the infant entirely, and delivered a brutal, precise side-kick to the bald thug’s bandaged jaw.

The man shrieked in agony, his gun firing blindly into the ceiling as he collapsed, clutching his shattered face.

"Run, Joanna!" Robert roared, throwing the baby gently onto the soft hospital bed and lunging toward Marcus.

The second thug let go of Joanna to aim at Robert, but Joanna, freed for a split second, grabbed a heavy metal tray table from the bedside and slammed it with all her strength into the back of the thug’s knees. The man stumbled, his balance broken.

Robert tackled Marcus to the floor, his fingers locking around the broker's throat. They rolled across the linoleum, exchanging brutal punches. Marcus was strong, but Robert was fueled by the survival of his bloodline. He grabbed a heavy glass flower vase from the counter and smashed it down onto Marcus’s temple.

Marcus groaned, his eyes rolling back as he went limp, blood streaming from his forehead.

The second thug had managed to push Joanna away and was raising his weapon to shoot Robert in the back.

BANG!

A loud, echoing gunshot shattered the room. But it didn't come from the thug's suppressed weapon.

The thug blinked, a neat red hole appearing in the center of his forehead, and he collapsed forward onto the floor like a felled tree.

Standing in the doorway of the room, leaning heavily against the splintered frame, stood Logan.

He was pale, his hospital gown covered in sweat, an IV pole supporting his trembling weight. In his right hand, he held the deceased police officer’s service pistol, the barrel smoking. His eyes, though unfocused and blurry from the coma recovery, were locked onto his father.

May you like

"Logan," Robert breathed, rising from the floor, his voice cracking with an overwhelming emotion.

Logan looked at his father, a small, fragile smile breaking through his bruised face. "You... you came back for us, Dad."
