Chapter 5 The Woman Behind Every Lie

The words echoed through the ruined wedding ballroom like the final notes of a funeral bell.
"Don't trust Ashcroft's daughter."
Detective Marcus Vance lowered his phone.
No one spoke.
The orchestra remained seated, their instruments forgotten.
Outside, helicopter blades thundered overhead as reporters fought for every glimpse of the Mercer family's collapse.
Inside...
An even greater storm was beginning.
Jonathan Mercer slowly shut the leather ledger.
"I prayed Victor would live long enough to testify."

Marcus nodded.
"He may still."
"But the surgeons aren't optimistic."
Caroline looked toward the shattered altar.
"If Victor wasn't the mastermind..."
"...who was?"
Jonathan's expression darkened.
"For thirty years..."
"I've been asking myself that same question."
One Hour Later
The ballroom had been transformed into a temporary command center.
Federal agents photographed evidence.
Financial investigators boxed documents.
Wedding guests quietly gave statements before leaving under police escort.
Only a handful of people remained.
Caroline.
Douglas.
Juliette.
Jonathan.
Marcus.
And Assistant District Attorney Rebecca Sloan.
Rebecca entered carrying a silver laptop.
"We've decrypted Victor Hale's private server."
Marcus looked up.
"Already?"
She nodded.
"There was a hidden partition."
Jonathan folded his arms.
"What did you find?"
Rebecca hesitated.
"Not what we expected."
She connected the laptop to the ballroom projector.
A single folder appeared.
PROJECT PHOENIX
Marcus frowned.
"I've never heard of it."
Jonathan had.
The color drained from his face.
"Oh no..."
Caroline noticed immediately.
"You know that name."
Jonathan stared silently at the screen.
"I thought Edward destroyed every record."
Rebecca opened the folder.
Inside were hundreds of files.
Secret contracts.
DNA reports.
Birth certificates.
Surveillance photographs.
Medical records.
Each document carried the same symbol—
A black phoenix rising from flames.
Marcus asked quietly,
"What exactly was Project Phoenix?"
Jonathan took a long breath.
"It wasn't a project."
"It was a family."
The room fell silent.
Jonathan slowly walked toward the screen.
"Forty years ago..."
"...California's wealthiest families formed a private alliance."
"They financed politicians."
"They controlled banks."
"They purchased judges."
"They made fortunes..."
"...by destroying anyone who threatened them."
Rebecca displayed another page.
Across the top appeared seven names.
The Mercer family.
The Hale family.
The Ashcroft family.
The Sinclair family.
The Bennett family.
The Rowan family.
The Prescott family.
Together—
They called themselves...
The Phoenix Circle.
Douglas whispered,
"My God..."
Jonathan nodded.
"Edward wanted out."
Years earlier...
Edward Mercer had discovered that several Phoenix Circle members were laundering money through international charities.
Millions disappeared every year.
Hospitals.
Scholarships.
Children's foundations.
Everything became vehicles for fraud.
Edward refused to continue.
Jonathan remembered the argument vividly.
"He told them..."
"'If building an empire requires innocent people to suffer, then it deserves to fall.'"
The room remained silent.
"They answered by making him an enemy."
Rebecca clicked another file.
A photograph filled the screen.
It showed seven people standing together at a charity gala twenty years earlier.
Jonathan.
Edward.
Victor Hale.
Several business leaders.
And—
A beautiful woman wearing an emerald evening gown.
Marcus leaned closer.
"Who is she?"
Jonathan answered quietly.
"Victoria Ashcroft."
Caroline frowned.
"The Ashcroft daughter?"
Jonathan slowly shook his head.
"No."
"The Ashcroft heir."
Another photograph appeared.
Victoria smiling beside Juliette during college graduation.
Another—
Victoria attending Edward's funeral.
Another—
Victoria standing beside Blackwood Manor...
The night before the fire.
Juliette gasped.
"I remember her."
Caroline turned.
"You never told me."
"I didn't think it mattered."
Jonathan interrupted.
"It mattered more than anything."
Marcus suddenly understood.
"Victor's last words..."
Jonathan nodded.
"He wasn't warning us about a daughter."
"He was warning us about the woman who inherited the Phoenix Circle."
Just then—
A young FBI analyst hurried inside.
"Detective!"
Marcus looked up.
"What happened?"
"We traced today's media leaks."
"And?"
"They didn't come from reporters."
Rebecca frowned.
"Then where?"
The analyst swallowed.
"Someone deliberately uploaded every Mercer document..."
"...using the Ashcroft Foundation's private network."
Silence.
Marcus slowly smiled.
"She's watching us."
Jonathan nodded.
"And she wants us to know."
Across Los Angeles...
Inside a glass penthouse overlooking the Pacific Ocean...
Victoria Ashcroft calmly watched the wedding scandal unfold on six enormous television screens.
She looked elegant.
Perfect.
Composed.
A crystal wineglass rested in one hand.
Her assistant approached quietly.
"They found Project Phoenix."
Victoria smiled.
"I expected they would."
"The police are searching your offices."
"They won't find anything."
She calmly switched off one television.
"What about Victor?"
The assistant hesitated.
"He survived surgery."
Victoria's smile disappeared.
"That's unfortunate."
She reached for her phone.
"No mistakes this time."
Back inside the ballroom—
Marcus's phone vibrated.
He answered immediately.
After only a few seconds—
His face hardened.
"The hospital."
Jonathan stepped forward.
"Victor?"
Marcus nodded.
"He regained consciousness."
"What did he say?"
Marcus looked around the room.
"He wants to speak only to Caroline."
Saint Gabriel Medical Center
The intensive care unit was almost silent.
Rain tapped softly against the windows.
Victor Hale lay motionless beneath white hospital sheets.
Machines beeped steadily around him.
His once-powerful voice had become little more than a whisper.
Caroline entered alone.
Marcus remained outside.
Victor slowly opened his eyes.
"You survived."
Caroline stood beside the bed.
"So did you."
He laughed weakly.
"I suppose neither of us dies easily."
Several painful seconds passed.
Finally—
Victor spoke.
"I owe you the truth."
Caroline folded her arms.
"Start talking."
Victor closed his eyes.
"I never wanted anyone dead."
Caroline's expression remained cold.
"I wanted money."
"I wanted influence."
"Victoria wanted power."
He coughed violently.
Blood stained the corner of his mouth.
"When Edward refused..."
"...she ordered me to destroy him."
Caroline whispered,
"The fire..."
Victor nodded.
"She planned everything."
"Juliette..."
"...was only a frightened young woman desperate for approval."
Fresh tears rolled down Caroline's cheeks.
"And Douglas?"
"He knew nothing."
"My father?"
Victor's voice broke.
"Edward died believing..."
"...you had burned alive."
Caroline covered her face.
For seven years...
Her father had mourned her.
Until his dying breath.
Victor reached beneath his pillow.
With shaking hands...
He removed a tiny brass key.
"I kept this hidden."
Caroline accepted it carefully.
"What does it open?"
Victor smiled faintly.
"A safety deposit box."
"Inside..."
"...is everything Victoria fears."
He grabbed her wrist with surprising strength.
"Don't let her destroy another family."
Caroline nodded.
"I won't."
Victor relaxed.
His breathing slowed.
He looked toward the window.
"I spent my entire life serving monsters..."
"...and became one."
A single tear escaped his eye.
"I'm sorry."
The heart monitor gave one long...
Steady...
Continuous tone.
Victor Hale was gone.
Three days later...
The funeral wasn't held for Victor.
No one came to honor him.
Instead—
Caroline stood before her father's grave.
Jonathan.
Douglas.
Juliette.
Marcus.
All stood beside her.
She gently placed fresh white lilies against the headstone.
"I know the truth now."
The wind rustled softly through the cemetery trees.
Jonathan rested a hand on her shoulder.
"What are you thinking?"
Caroline looked toward the horizon.
"I'm thinking..."
"...this isn't over."
She reached into her pocket.
The brass key caught the afternoon sunlight.
Marcus noticed immediately.
"The safety deposit box."
Caroline nodded.
"We open it tomorrow."
Douglas frowned.
"You think it contains evidence?"
Jonathan smiled sadly.
"If Victor risked his life protecting it..."
"...it contains something much bigger."
Just then—
Rebecca's phone rang.
She answered.
After a long silence—
She slowly lowered it.
"Victoria Ashcroft..."
"...has disappeared."
Marcus cursed under his breath.
"When?"
"Two hours ago."
"No passport activity."
"No private flights."
"No financial transactions."
Jonathan looked toward the distant city skyline.
"She's not running."
Caroline turned toward him.
"Then what is she doing?"
Jonathan's answer chilled everyone.
"She's preparing for war."
Far away, hidden beneath an abandoned vineyard in Napa Valley...
Victoria Ashcroft unlocked a massive steel vault.
Inside stood rows of shelves filled with decades of secrets.
She smiled as she picked up one final file.
Across its cover were three handwritten words.
CAROLINE MERCER — PHASE TWO
She whispered to herself,
"You survived the fire..."
"...but let's see if you survive the truth."
