Chapter 4: The Woman Who Never Died

Chapter 4: The Woman Who Never Died

Arthur Sterling moved before the gunshot finished echoing.
The sniper's first bullet tore through Evelyn's apartment window, showering the living room with glittering shards of glass. Denise Walker instinctively threw herself over Evelyn, shielding the pregnant woman with her own body as fragments rained across the hardwood floor.
"Stay down!" Denise shouted.
A second shot exploded through the window frame, embedding itself deep into the brick fireplace.
Arthur burst through the apartment door without knocking.
"Everybody away from the windows!"
His commanding voice carried the unmistakable authority of a man who had spent decades making life-or-death decisions.
Evelyn looked up in shock.
He was the man from the photograph.
Older now, his dark hair streaked with silver and his face weathered by years of hardship, but unmistakably the same man standing beside her mother beneath the willow tree.
Their eyes met for the first time.
Arthur's expression softened.
"My God," he whispered.
"You have Elizabeth's eyes."
Outside, the sniper adjusted his position.
He watched through the scope as the elderly man entered the apartment.
His expression hardened.
"Target Alpha confirmed," he muttered into a concealed microphone.
"Sterling has made contact."
A woman's calm voice answered through the earpiece.
"Terminate both."
The sniper inhaled slowly.
His finger tightened on the trigger.
Arthur noticed the faint flash of sunlight reflecting from a distant rooftop.
"Get down!"

He lunged toward Evelyn just as another bullet shattered the wall where she had been sitting seconds earlier.
The apartment erupted into chaos.
Books flew from their shelves.
Plaster exploded into the air.
Denise crawled toward the hallway while pulling Evelyn behind her.
Arthur calmly returned fire through the broken window.
One precise shot.
Not to kill.
To force the sniper into cover.
It worked.
The rooftop went silent.
Arthur turned immediately toward Evelyn.
"Are you hurt?"
She shook her head, breathing hard.
"No..."
Her eyes never left his face.
"I know you."
Arthur smiled sadly.
"No."
"You know your mother's memories."
Before Evelyn could ask another question, police sirens filled the street below.
Within moments, officers surrounded the building.
The sniper disappeared.
Gone before tactical units reached the rooftop.
Only three shell casings remained behind.
Professional.
Disciplined.
Invisible.
Twenty minutes later...
Detective Maria Alvarez arrived personally.
She had spent twenty-two years investigating organized crime in Chicago.
The moment she entered the apartment, Arthur recognized her.
She recognized him too.
"You disappeared thirty years ago."

Arthur smiled faintly.
"I've been busy."
Maria folded her arms.
"I've also been looking for you."
"I'm aware."
"You could have made things much easier."
Arthur glanced toward Evelyn.
"Not while she was alive."
Maria looked confused.
"You mean Elizabeth?"
Arthur nodded once.
"She wasn't dead."
The room became completely silent.
Evelyn stared at him.
"What did you just say?"
Arthur looked directly into her eyes.
"Your mother survived."
The words knocked the air from Evelyn's lungs.
"No..."
Arthur slowly reached inside his coat.
Denise instinctively tensed.
Instead of a weapon...
He removed a worn leather wallet.
Inside was a faded photograph.
Taken only three years earlier.
Elizabeth.
Older.
Gray beginning to touch her hair.
Smiling gently while sitting in a wheelchair beside a mountain cabin.
Evelyn's hands began shaking violently.
"No..."
Tears streamed freely down her face.
"This isn't possible."
Arthur handed her the photograph.
"I took that picture."
"Three years ago."
The room seemed to spin.
"My mother..."
"...is alive?"
Arthur's expression filled with sorrow.
"She was."
The hope that had flared inside Evelyn vanished almost instantly.
"What do you mean... was?"
Arthur looked away.
"She died eight months ago."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Evelyn clutched the photograph against her chest.
Eight months.
Her mother had been alive.
Alive...
While Evelyn believed she had buried her years earlier.
Arthur knelt beside her.
"Elizabeth wanted to come home."
"So why didn't she?"
Arthur closed his eyes briefly.
"Because every time we tried..."
"...someone tried to kill her."
Detective Alvarez quietly asked,
"Who?"
Arthur answered without hesitation.
"The same people shooting at us today."
Meanwhile...
Grant Holloway sat inside his father's private study.
William Holloway had unlocked a hidden wall safe.
Inside rested dozens of old files.
Newspaper clippings.
Photographs.
Legal documents.
Some were more than forty years old.
Grant picked up one yellowed folder.
Across the front...
ASHCROFT PROJECT
His stomach tightened.
"What is this?"
William slowly removed his glasses.
"The greatest mistake our family ever made."
Grant opened the file.
Every page deepened his horror.
Payments.
Bribes.
Corporate mergers.
Political favors.
And finally...
One contract.
Signed by Richard Ashcroft.
Elizabeth's father.
Grant looked up.
"What is this?"
William answered quietly.
"He sold his daughter."
Grant felt sick.
"To who?"
William swallowed.
"To a man named Victor Kane."
Grant frowned.
"I've never heard that name."
"You weren't supposed to."
"He worked for several powerful families."
"What did he do?"
William stared at the floor.
"He made inconvenient people disappear."
Grant slammed the folder shut.
"My God."
William nodded.
"Elizabeth escaped."
Grant whispered,
"And Evelyn..."
William closed his eyes.
"Was born while they were hiding."
Grant suddenly remembered the attack outside the courthouse.
"They're trying to finish what started forty years ago."
William nodded.
"Yes."
"And if Evelyn discovers everything..."
"Our family dies with the truth."
Across the city...
Judge Nathaniel Sterling arrived at the apartment surrounded by private security.
The moment he entered...
His eyes found Evelyn.
She stood silently beside the broken window.
Still holding the photograph of her mother.
Nathaniel wanted to embrace her.
To tell her everything.
But he couldn't.
Not yet.
Instead, he spoke carefully.
"I'm glad you're safe."
Evelyn looked at him strangely.
"Have we met before today?"
Nathaniel forced himself to answer honestly.
"I don't believe we have."
Arthur quietly interrupted.
"No."
"You met long before today."
Both turned toward him.
Arthur took a slow breath.
"Nathaniel..."
"It's time."
Nathaniel understood immediately.
"The truth?"
Arthur nodded.
"All of it."
He placed another envelope on the dining table.
This one much thicker than the first.
Inside...
A birth certificate.
A hospital bracelet.
Several photographs.
And one sealed DNA report dated twenty-eight years earlier.
Nathaniel slowly picked it up.
His hands trembled.
The envelope bore only one handwritten sentence in Elizabeth's familiar script.
Open this only when Evelyn is finally safe.
No one in the room moved.
No one spoke.
Nathaniel carefully broke the seal.
As he unfolded the first page, the color drained completely from his face.
Arthur closed his eyes.
Detective Alvarez whispered,
"...What is it?"
Nathaniel looked first at Evelyn.
Then at the DNA report.
Finally, he spoke the words that would change every life in the room forever.
"Evelyn..."
"...Grant Holloway isn't your greatest enemy."
He slowly lifted his eyes toward Arthur.
"Someone from our own bloodline ordered Elizabeth's disappearance..."
May you like
"...and that person is still alive."
