Chapter 4 - The Audit of Deceit

By 3:00 PM, Khloe had been escorted from the Sterling Innovations tower by two uniform security guards, her personal belongings stuffed into a generic cardboard box. The image of the arrogant executive secretary being marched through the main lobby under guard was already viral on the company’s internal messaging channels.

But my work was far from over. A corporate snake like Preston doesn't operate in a vacuum; human greed always leaves a paper trail.

I remained in the boardroom with Martin Vance and a team of five independent forensic accountants who had been quietly embedded in the building under the guise of a routine tax evaluation. Preston had been confined to his office, his corporate phone and laptop seized by the IT security department.

"Vivian, you need to see this," the lead accountant, a sharp woman named Elena, said, turning her laptop toward me. "We've been tracking the corporate contingency funds for the upcoming Q4 hardware launch. Over the last six months, Preston has authorized a series of secondary consulting fees to an offshore shell company registered in the Cayman Islands under the name KV Holdings."

"KV Holdings," I repeated, the ice in my veins turning into a hard, focused rage. "Khloe Vance."

"Exactly," Elena nodded, clicking through a series of wire transfer receipts. "A total of four hundred and fifty thousand dollars has been diverted from our research and development budget into this account. He signed off on them using his emergency executive spending cap—the one you granted him last year when you signed the corporate proxy updates."

"He was stealing from my father's foundation to fund his mistress's lifestyle," I said, my fingers tightening around my fountain pen until the plastic casing creaked.

"It’s grand larceny, Vivian," Martin Vance said, his face grave. "Combined with corporate embezzlement and breach of fiduciary duty. This goes far beyond a divorce settlement. He was systematically draining the company’s liquid assets to prepare for a hostile management buyout. He’s been in talks with an outside private equity firm—Vanguard Capital—to sell off our proprietary semiconductor patents."

I stood up from the table, walking over to the massive glass window. Below, the sprawling campus of Silicon Valley looked like a circuit board, vibrant and alive. My father had built this company to create things, to protect his people, to leave a mark of genuine innovation on the world. Preston had looked at this monument of human achievement and seen nothing but a cash cow to be slaughtered for his own vanity.

"Where are the contract negotiations with Vanguard Capital?" I asked.

"They're scheduled to meet Preston tomorrow morning at ten o'clock at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose," Martin said, pulling a digital calendar printout from his file. "They think they're buying the keys to the castle."

I turned away from the window, my suit jacket catching the sharp afternoon light. "Call the managing partners at Vanguard Capital, Martin. Tell them the meeting is still on. But inform them that the Chief Operating Officer will not be attending. Tell them the Chairperson of the Board will be there to show them what a real acquisition looks like."
