Chapter 8 - The Clearing of the Fog

Two hours later, the quiet mountain valley was filled with the flashing red and blue lights of over twenty federal and state law enforcement vehicles. The FBI Child Exploitation Task Force had arrived in full force, their forensic team erecting a massive white tent over the backyard, their blue-suited technicians carefully sifting through the mud with specialized tools.
Agent Carter walked over to Eric, who was standing near the hood of his truck, a thermal blanket wrapped around his shoulders.
"We found her, Major," Carter said softly, his voice full of a grim satisfaction. "Sarah Chun has been recovered. And we found more than just her. There are documents in the basement safe—ledgers detailing over fifteen years of illegal placements and extortion payments from families all over the state. Myrtle Savage was running a black-market network for unwanted children under the guise of her spiritual retreats. The Vance investigators were her enforcers."
Eric looked toward the back of an FBI transport vehicle, where Brenda sat in handcuffs, being loaded into the rear seat alongside her mother. She looked at him through the glass one last time, her eyes filled with an unspoken apology, but Eric simply turned his head away. The woman he had loved was gone, buried beneath years of lies and betrayal.
"What happens to Emma now?" Eric asked, his voice cracking with the first sign of real emotion he had shown since the ordeal began.
"The temporary guardianship contract is null and void due to criminal fraud and child endangerment," Carter said, handing Eric a certified federal document bearing a judge's gold seal. "This is an emergency sole-custody order. You are her father, Major. She belongs to you, and only you. Go home and take care of your little girl."

Eric shook the agent's hand, thanking him, before walking over to Marcus and the rest of his platoon. The men were standing near their trucks, soaked to the skin by the mountain rain, but they were smiling.
"Mission accomplished, brother," Marcus said, clapping Eric on the shoulder. "Go get your kid. We’ll handle the paperwork from here."
