Chapter 5 - The Unlikely Ally

Through the shattered remnants of the balcony door stepped Marcus, the building’s overnight security guard, accompanied by three uniformed police officers with their weapons drawn. Marcus was holding a heavy metal tactical flashlight, his face grim.

“Police! Nobody move!” one of the officers thundered.

The two private guards instantly threw their hands in the air, realizing they had been caught in an illegal abduction attempt inside a high-security residential building. Thomas spun around, his jaw dropping in absolute terror as the officers tackled him directly onto the floral-covered sofa, pinning his arms behind his back.

“Alice! Alice, tell them! I’m her husband!” Thomas screamed as the handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. “She’s unstable! I have the paperwork!”

“Shut up, Mr. Higgins,” Detective Miller said, stepping out from behind the officers. He looked at the manila folder Thomas was holding and snatched it from his grip. “We’ve been monitoring your digital bank transfers since this morning. The moment you moved that three hundred and fifty thousand dollars into your mother’s LLC, the federal financial fraud unit flagged it. We didn't have enough to arrest you yesterday, but grand larceny and attempted kidnapping under the guise of medical fraud? You just handed us a federal case.”

As the officers dragged Thomas and his hired thugs out of the apartment, Marcus walked over to me, carefully stepping over the broken glass. He looked genuinely concerned, offering me a clean towel to wipe a small scratch on my arm from the flying glass.

“Are you alright, Ms. Sterling?” Marcus asked softly.

“I... I am now,” I breathed, my knees shaking as the adrenaline began to fade. “Marcus, how did you know? How did you get onto the balcony?”

Marcus gave a small, respectful smile. “Mr. Vance and I have been watching the security feeds since you went to his office today. We saw him arrive with those two men, and we noticed they bypassed the front desk guest log. I took the service elevator to the maintenance ledge next to your balcony just in case things went sideways. I’m glad I did.”

“Thank you,” I said, tears finally spilling over my eyes. “Thank you for saving my life.”

Detective Miller walked back into the room, holding his notepad. “Ms. Sterling, the immediate threat is gone. Thomas is going to a federal holding cell tonight. But you need to know something—this goes deeper than just your husband. We ran a preliminary check on E.H. Properties LLC. Your mother-in-law, Evelyn Higgins, isn't just a passive bystander in this. She signed the corporate acceptance forms for the stolen funds less than twenty minutes ago from a luxury hotel downtown. She’s an active co-conspirator.”

A cold, fierce calm washed over me. The tears stopped. I looked around my ruined living room—the ugly covers, the broken glass, the stolen peace.

“Where is she, Detective?” I asked, my voice steady. “Tell me exactly which hotel she’s staying at. I want to look her in the eyes when her world collapses.”
