CHAPTER 1: THE FOOTAGE

My husband didn't say a word.

He simply inserted the memory card into his laptop.

The kitchen felt impossibly quiet.

Outside, rain tapped softly against the windows.

Inside, my heart hammered so hard I could hear it.

Michael clicked the video file.

The screen flickered.

Then the porch appeared.

Black-and-white footage.

Timestamp visible.

11:42 PM.

The night before I found my parents.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

The front porch remained empty.

The swing moved slightly in the wind.

The flowerpots sat exactly where my mother always kept them.

Then someone appeared.

A woman.

My stomach tightened.

The camera angle wasn't perfect.

A hood covered most of her face.

But something felt familiar.

Painfully familiar.

She walked directly toward the front door.

Not hesitating.

Not looking around.

Not acting like a stranger.

Acting like someone who belonged there.

Someone who knew the house.

My breath caught.

The woman knocked.

Seconds later, the door opened.

My father appeared.

Even through the grainy footage, I could see him smiling.

Smiling.

He recognized her.

Trusted her.

Welcomed her.

He stepped aside.

The woman entered.

The door closed.

The footage continued.

Nothing happened for nearly forty minutes.

Then the front door opened again.

The woman emerged.

Alone.

She looked over her shoulder once.

Then hurried away.

The porch light briefly illuminated her face.

Only for a second.

But a second was enough.

The laptop nearly slipped from my hands.

"No."

Michael said nothing.

Because he knew.

We both knew.

The woman wasn't a stranger.

She wasn't a neighbor.

She wasn't a burglar.

She was my sister.

Kara.

The Sister I Thought I Knew

For a long time, neither of us spoke.

The video ended.

Rain continued falling outside.

My entire body felt numb.

Kara?

No.

Impossible.

My sister called our parents every day.

She brought them groceries.

She organized birthdays.

She cried when our childhood dog died.

She loved them.

Didn't she?

I replayed the footage.

Again.

Then again.

Every viewing felt worse.

Because the face never changed.

It remained Kara.

Always Kara.

Finally Michael spoke.

"Maybe there's an explanation."

I laughed.

The sound came out broken.

"What explanation?"

Neither of us had one.

The next morning we brought the footage directly to Detective Sarah Reynolds.

A veteran investigator assigned to the case.

She watched the entire recording twice.

Then leaned back in her chair.

Expression unreadable.

"When was the last time you spoke with your sister?"

The question surprised me.

"Two days ago."

"What did she say?"

I thought back.

Kara had sounded normal.

Concerned.

Heartbroken.

Exactly what anyone would expect.

Detective Reynolds folded her hands.

"Emily."

Her voice softened.

"We need to ask some difficult questions."

My stomach dropped.

Because suddenly I understood.

The investigation had changed.

Completely.

The Search

Police moved quickly.

Very quickly.

Within forty-eight hours they obtained warrants.

Kara's home.

Her vehicle.

Her financial records.

Her phone.

Everything.

I wasn't present during the search.

But Detective Reynolds later explained what happened.

The first discovery came from Kara's kitchen.

A bottle.

Hidden behind cleaning supplies.

Containing traces of the same harmful substance found in my parents' food.

The second discovery was worse.

Bank statements.

Large withdrawals.

Repeated cash transactions.

Payments from an unknown account.

Then came the third discovery.

The one that shattered everything.

A handwritten notebook.

Inside were pages of calculations.

Property values.

Investment estimates.

Inheritance projections.

My parents' savings.

Their home.

Their retirement accounts.

Every asset carefully listed.

And beside several entries appeared a single word.

Soon.

Detective Reynolds placed photographs of the notebook on her desk.

I stared at them.

Unable to breathe.

Unable to think.

Unable to understand how my sister's handwriting could feel so foreign.

"So what does this mean?"

The detective looked tired.

"It means someone was planning something."

Someone.

Not yet Kara.

Not officially.

Not until evidence proved it.

But deep down I already knew.

The truth was standing directly in front of me.

And I hated it.

The Arrest

Three days later, Kara was arrested.

The news spread through our town instantly.

Neighbors whispered.

Friends called.

Relatives chose sides.

Some refused to believe it.

Others believed it immediately.

Neither reaction helped.

Because I still couldn't understand why.

Why would Kara do this?

What could possibly justify hurting the people who loved her most?

The answer arrived sooner than expected.

And it was even worse than I imagined.

Because Kara wasn't acting alone.

The detective called that evening.

"Emily."

Something in her voice made my pulse race.

"What happened?"

"We recovered deleted messages."

Silence.

Then:

"Messages between Kara and another person."

My hands tightened around the phone.

"Who?"

A pause followed.

A long pause.

The kind that prepares you for disaster.

Then Detective Reynolds spoke.

"The messages were with someone very close to your family."

The room suddenly felt smaller.

Colder.

Dangerous.

I looked across the living room.

At Michael.

My husband.

The man who had stood beside me through everything.

The man who found the memory card.

The man helping me survive this nightmare.

And for one terrible second...

May you like

I wondered if the detective was about to say his name.

To be continued in Chapter 2...
