CHAPTER 1: THE PARTY SHE NEVER EXPECTED ME TO ATTEND

The red lingerie wasn't hidden very well.

That was the first thing I noticed.

After twelve years of marriage, I knew every inch of my husband's truck.

Every compartment.

Every storage pocket.

Every scratch on the dashboard.

Which was why the flash of crimson silk tucked beneath the rear seat immediately caught my attention.

At first, I assumed it belonged to me.

Then I picked it up.

And realized it absolutely did not.

The size was wrong.

The style was wrong.

And most importantly, I had never seen it before in my life.

For several seconds, I simply stared.

Waiting for a reasonable explanation to appear.

It never did.

Instead, I found something else.

A hotel key card.

Black.

Elegant.

Expensive.

Embossed with a gold logo.

The Grand Meridian Hotel.

One of the most exclusive luxury hotels in Chicago.

The kind of place where a single night cost more than some people earned in a month.

My stomach tightened.

I turned the card over.

Room 2718.

No name.

No date.

Just a room number.

A room someone had visited recently.

Very recently.

Because when I slipped the card into my purse later that afternoon and called the hotel anonymously, I learned something interesting.

Room 2718 was occupied repeatedly.

The same weekends.

The same dates.

Over the past eight months.

The exact weekends my husband claimed he was traveling for business.

I sat in my car outside the hotel parking garage for nearly an hour.

Not crying.

Not screaming.

Just thinking.

Because betrayal isn't always dramatic.

Sometimes it's quiet.

Sometimes it's a slow realization that you've been the only honest person in your marriage.

My husband, Derek Whitmore, had spent years cultivating a reputation.

Successful entrepreneur.

Family man.

Community leader.

Golden son of one of Chicago's wealthiest families.

People loved Derek.

People trusted Derek.

People believed Derek.

I used to be one of those people.

Not anymore.

That evening, while Derek was supposedly attending another business meeting, I made a decision.

I wasn't going to confront him privately.

I wasn't going to beg for explanations.

I wasn't going to compete with a mistress for a man who clearly wasn't worth winning.

No.

I was going to wait.

And I was going to let him expose himself.

The opportunity arrived three days later.

His father was celebrating his seventieth birthday.

A massive event.

Eighty guests.

Politicians.

Business executives.

Family members.

Investors.

Friends.

The entire Whitmore inner circle would be there.

Including Derek.

Including his mysterious mistress.

Though she didn't know I knew about her yet.

I spent three days preparing.

Not emotionally.

Strategically.

Because the hotel card wasn't the only thing I'd discovered.

Far from it.

The more I dug, the stranger everything became.

Credit card charges.

Luxury purchases.

Private dining reservations.

Business expenses that didn't look like business expenses at all.

Then I found something even more interesting.

A company.

A company Derek repeatedly claimed was part of a major investment partnership.

According to public records, that company barely existed.

No employees.

No real office.

No meaningful operations.

Yet somehow thousands of dollars flowed through it every month.

I hired a private investigator.

Then a forensic accountant.

And within forty-eight hours, both called me with the same message.

Something was very wrong.

Very.

Very wrong.

By the night of the birthday party, I had accumulated an entire folder.

Photographs.

Financial records.

Emails.

Invoices.

Hotel reservations.

Enough information to destroy a marriage.

Possibly more.

Still, I wasn't fully prepared for what happened next.

The ballroom glittered beneath crystal chandeliers.

Waiters carried champagne.

Live musicians played near the stage.

Guests laughed and mingled.

The Whitmore family occupied the center of everything, exactly as they preferred.

Power surrounded them like perfume.

I entered quietly.

Several people looked surprised.

Good.

Derek certainly did.

His smile disappeared the moment he saw me.

Then came confusion.

Then concern.

Then fear.

A very small amount.

But enough.

He immediately crossed the room.

"What are you doing here?"

Interesting question.

Not "You look beautiful."

Not "I'm glad you came."

Just panic.

I smiled.

"Attending a family event."

His eyes narrowed.

"You weren't invited."

Several nearby guests overheard.

Awkward.

I leaned closer.

"Neither was your mistress."

His face went completely white.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then he whispered:

"What did you say?"

I reached into my purse.

Pulled out the red lingerie.

And handed it to him.

Right there.

In front of everyone.

The silence spread instantly.

Like a shockwave.

People turned.

Conversations stopped.

Music continued playing somewhere in the background, absurdly cheerful compared to the tension exploding around us.

Derek stared at the fabric.

Then at me.

Then back again.

His hands trembled.

"Where did you get this?"

"Oh, come on."

I smiled sweetly.

"You left it in your truck."

The room seemed to stop breathing.

His mother looked horrified.

His father looked confused.

Several guests exchanged shocked glances.

Then a woman near the back of the ballroom suddenly dropped her champagne glass.

Crash.

Every head turned toward her.

Young.

Beautiful.

Blonde.

Terrified.

And judging by Derek's expression...

Exactly who I thought she was.

The mistress.

The ballroom erupted into whispers.

People began connecting dots immediately.

The woman looked ready to run.

Derek looked trapped.

And for one glorious moment, I thought that was the biggest secret about to come out.

I was wrong.

Because hidden inside my purse was a flash drive.

And programmed inside that flash drive was a timed message.

A message scheduled to appear on every screen in the ballroom exactly seven minutes from now.

A message containing evidence nobody in the Whitmore family knew existed.

Evidence that had nothing to do with cheating.

Nothing to do with hotel rooms.

Nothing to do with lingerie.

Evidence involving fake companies.

Missing money.

Fraudulent deals.

And a secret so dangerous that if it became public, the entire Whitmore empire could collapse overnight.

I looked up at the giant presentation screens hanging above the ballroom.

Six minutes remaining.

And across the room, completely unaware of what was coming, Derek's father raised his glass to begin his birthday speech.

The countdown had already started.
