Chapter 7 - The Final Settlement

One week before Madison’s due date, Arthur Vance arrived at my gallery holding a thick white binder.

“It’s finished, Emily,” Arthur declared, setting the document onto my desk. “The bankruptcy court has approved the final distribution order. The Cayman funds have been fully repatriated, the investors have been made whole, and Daniel’s remaining personal assets—including his Mercedes and his wristwatches—have been auctioned off by the federal marshal.”

I flipped through the final decree of divorce and financial liquidation.

At the bottom of the last page was Daniel’s jagged, pathetic signature, signed from a federal correctional facility in upstate New York, where he was currently serving his twelve-year sentence.

“What does he have left?” I asked softly.

“Nothing,” Arthur replied bluntly. “When he finishes his sentence at age forty-eight, he will emerge with a felony record, zero financial assets, a permanent ban from working in the financial services industry, and a court-mandated wage garnishment order for child support that will follow him for eighteen years.”

I signed the final line of the settlement paper, releasing the last legal bond that tied my name to Daniel Carter.

I picked up the pen, capped it, and handed the document back to Arthur.

“Thank you, Arthur,” I said softly. “For everything.”

“You fought a hard battle, Emily,” the old lawyer said warmly, shaking my hand. “Most people would have let anger destroy them. You used it to build a fortress.”

After Arthur left, I walked out onto the balcony of my loft gallery.

The city spread out before me—bright, vibrant, and endless. The ocean breeze blew through my hair, carrying the cool scent of salt and spring air.

For seven years, I had believed that my worth was defined by my ability to hold a fragile man’s ego together. I had believed that being a good wife meant swallowing my intuition, ignoring the red flags, and accepting crumbs of affection while sitting in a golden cage.

Now, the cage was gone. The golden bars had been melted down and repurposed into a life that was entirely my own.

My phone rang in my pocket. I pulled it out and saw Madison’s name on the screen.

“Emily!” Madison’s frantic, joyful voice filled my ear. “It’s time! My water just broke! We’re heading to St. Jude’s Hospital!”

A surge of pure, electric joy shot through my veins.

“I’m on my way, Madison!” I cried out, grabbing my jacket and my handbag from the coat rack. “I’ll meet you in the delivery room!”
