Chapter 3: The Gathering of the Wolves

Chapter 3: The Gathering of the Wolves

The high-rise headquarters of the Vance Group in downtown Los Angeles resembled a fortress under siege. The news of the impending corporate restructuring had not yet reached the public, but inside the executive suites on the 50th floor, the atmosphere was thick with panic.

Julian Vance paced behind his massive mahogany desk, his tie completely undone, his hair disheveled. The smooth, unbothered real estate king looked haggard, his eyes bloodshot as he stared at a row of tablets displaying dropping stock futures and frantic emails from legacy board members. Across from him sat Eleanor, her elegant composure fractured into a mask of pure, trembling rage. She was downing an expensive glass of whiskey at 10:00 in the morning.

"How did this happen, Mother?" Julian shouted, slamming his fist onto the desk, rattling the crystal decanters. "You told me the fertility clinic was locked down! You told me that girl was a nobody who would rot in some suburban apartment! Now her lawyers have filed a federal emergency motion to suspend my voting rights on the legacy board!"

"Shut up, Julian!" Eleanor snapped, her voice sharp as broken glass. "I didn't know the Swiss vault had mislabeled the security codes. That pathetic little auditor must have spent her nights digging through our old digital archives instead of cleaning floors. She didn't just find the genetic report; she found the offshore routing numbers for Project Alpha."

Julian froze, his face turning an asymmetric shade of gray. "Project Alpha? The Panama accounts? Mother... if the board sees those records, we aren't just looking at a corporate coup. We're looking at federal prison for grand larceny and wire fraud."

Before Eleanor could respond, the heavy glass double doors of the boardroom swung open.

I walked in.

I was no longer wearing the faded hotel laundry uniform or the stretched maternity clothes that had defined my life for the past three months. I wore a perfectly tailored, sharp black power suit, my hair pinned back into a sleek, professional bun. My steps were steady, measured, and entirely devoid of the fear that had once made me flinch at the sound of Julian's voice. Behind me walked a phalanx of legal giants—led by Marcus Vance, Arthur Vance’s estranged younger cousin and the senior partner of the city's most ruthless corporate defense firm. Behind them came two federal marshals, their expressions grim and unyielding.

Julian scrambled backward against his desk, his hand instinctively reaching for his phone. "Vivian! What the hell is the meaning of this? This is private corporate property! Security! Get these people out of my office!"

"Your security detail was relieved of their duties ten minutes ago, Julian," Marcus Vance said, stepping forward and tossing a heavy, leather-bound folder onto the mahogany table. "As the senior legal executor of the Arthur Vance Legacy Trust, and acting on behalf of the newly verified direct biological heir, Leo Vance, I have initiated an immediate emergency freeze on all corporate assets, operational accounts, and executive voting proxies connected to your name."

Eleanor stood up slowly, her eyes burning with an ancient, unadulterated hatred as she glared at me. "You think you can ruin us with a technicality, Vivian? You are a middle-class parasite. You cleaned toilets to pay your rent. The board will never accept a newborn child as the ruler of this empire over my son, who has built this company into a multibillion-dollar giant."

"Your son didn't build this company, Eleanor," I said, my voice calm, cold, and cutting through the room like an icy wind. "He plundered it. While you were busy telling everyone I was unstable and unfaithful, I was auditing your life. I spent my midnight shifts downloading the digital receipts of your survival."

I nodded to Marcus, who tapped his tablet, bringing up a massive, high-definition projection onto the boardroom’s central screen.

It wasn't just financial spreadsheets. It was a comprehensive, undeniable map of a thirty-five-year fraud. It showed the wire transfers Eleanor had made to the Swiss reproductive facility to conceal Julian’s true paternity. It showed the systematic embezzlement of four hundred million dollars from the core legacy trust over the last three years, routed through shell companies managed by Eleanor’s secret lover and Julian's biological father, Richard Vance.

Julian’s breath hitched. He looked at the screen, then at his mother, his voice dropping into a desperate whine. "Mother... tell them it’s a lie. Tell them we can pay it back."

"There is no paying it back, Mr. Vance," one of the federal marshals said, stepping forward and pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Arthur Julian Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit interstate bank fraud, grand larceny, and obstruction of justice. Eleanor Vance, you are under arrest for corporate embezzlement and identity fraud."

The world seemed to stop for a fraction of a second. The untouchable vipers who had casually thrown me into the street, frozen my bank accounts, and left me to give birth alone in the dark were suddenly surrounded by the cold reality of their own greed.

As the marshals moved forward, clicking the handcuffs around Julian’s wrists, he looked back at me, his eyes wide with a pathetic, terrifying panic. "Vivian, please! We have a son together! You can't do this to me! Think about the family name!"

May you like

"My son's name is Leo Santillan-Vance," I said, looking him dead in the eye as they dragged him toward the door. "And the only thing he inherits from you... is the truth."

Eleanor didn't scream. She didn't beg. She walked out ahead of the marshals, her head held high, but her eyes were dead, hollowed out by the absolute certainty that her thirty-five-year empire had just turned to dust before her eyes.
