Chapter 7 - The Downfall of Victoria Sterling

By 10:00 PM, Arthur Vance and I were back inside the top-floor suite of Miles Global Logistics.
On the conference table sat the contents of Brandon's safe deposit box: three encrypted flash drives, a black notebook containing dates and wire transfer amounts, and four audio files containing high-definition recordings of Victoria Sterling ordering the economic destruction of my mother, my late godfather, and myself.
Sitting across from us was Special Agent Sarah Miller of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Financial Crimes Division.
Agent Miller took off her glasses, rubbing her tired eyes as the final audio file finished playing through the room’s speakers:
“...If the girl doesn't sign by her birthday, Brandon, strip her of everything. Leave her on the street until she's desperate enough to sell her soul for a hot meal. When she's broken, bring her to my yacht in Monaco.”
Agent Miller slammed her laptop shut.
"This is enough for an Interpol Red Notice," Agent Miller declared, looking at me with deep respect. "Victoria Sterling has been dodging European authorities for two decades. With these recordings, combined with the master ledger from your godfather's vault, we can freeze the entire Sterling Sovereign Fund by midnight."
"What about my mother's reputation?" I asked firmly, my hands resting on the desk. "Victoria threatened to frame my mother for the 1998 art theft."
Agent Miller pulled a yellowed paper from a folder. "Miss Quinn... your mother didn't steal those paintings. These ledger files prove Victoria Sterling stole them herself and used her private archive to hold them as collateral against Swiss bankers. Your mother was the one who logged the evidence that proved Victoria's guilt."
A heavy, aching knot that had lived in my chest for weeks suddenly snapped.
My mother wasn't a criminal. She wasn't a fugitive. She had been a brave, brilliant woman who had sacrificed her quiet life in Europe to protect the world from a monster—and she had raised me to do the exact same thing.
"Agent Miller," I said, standing up and holding out my hand. "Take the ledger. Take the drives. Put Victoria Sterling in a cage."
Agent Miller shook my hand warmly. "Thank you, Chairman Quinn. Your mother would be immensely proud of you."
Two hours later, the news broke across international networks.
Live television feeds showed Interpol officers raiding Victoria Sterling’s private estate in Zurich. Her yachts were seized, her bank accounts frozen, and her private security team disarmed on live television.
Victoria was led out of her mansion in handcuffs, wearing the same pearl necklace she had worn during our video call—her face pale, her reign of terror brought to a swift, absolute end.
I sat on the balcony of my penthouse, watching the rain stop over the city sky, a glass of wine in my hand.
Arthur Vance stepped out onto the balcony, holding two blue legal folders.
"Victoria Sterling is in custody," Arthur reported quietly. "Her syndicate is dismantled. And Brandon Miles has just been denied bail after federal prosecutors added conspiracy and extortion charges to his indictment."
"How long is Brandon looking at?" I asked softly, staring at the stars breaking through the clearing clouds.
"Fifteen to twenty years in a federal penitentiary," Arthur replied. "He won't be bothering anyone for a very long time."
I took a slow sip of my wine, feeling the cool night air brush against my face.
"And the company?" I asked.
"Miles Global Logistics stock has risen forty percent since you took the chair this afternoon," Arthur smiled warmly. "The board has officially confirmed your permanent appointment as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman."
I set my glass down on the balcony railing, looking down at the gleaming, beautiful city below.

Twenty-four hours ago, I was a girl with muddy feet, sleeping under a concrete highway bridge, believing my life was over.
Today, I was the master of my own destiny.
