Chapter 3: The Freezing of Assets

Chapter 3: The Freezing of Assets

The silence in the room didn't last. It shattered into a cacophony of overlapping screams, accusations, and the sound of my mother bursting into frantic, hysterical tears.

"Claire! Turn that off! This is a fabrication! This is malicious!" my mother shrieked, rushing toward the television as if she could claw the digital images off the screen with her bare hands.

Derek had gone a sickly, greenish color. He dropped his champagne glass, the crystal smashing against the hardwood floor, the liquid soaking into the rug. He lunged toward me, his face twisted into an ugly, desperate snarl, his polished corporate persona completely disintegrating.

"You crazy bitch!" he yelled, reaching for my arm. "You think you can humiliate me in front of my family? You think you're nothing without my firm? I built your lifestyle!"

Before his fingers could touch my skin, the heavy front door of my mother’s house was pushed open. Two men in dark suits and a woman wearing a badge from the King County Sheriff's Department stepped into the foyer. Behind them stood Lauren, looking sharp, professional, and entirely lethal.

"Mr. Mercer, step away from my client immediately," Lauren said, her voice dropping like a heavy iron portcullis.

The female deputy stepped forward, pulling a thick stack of legal documents from her briefcase. "Derek Mercer, you are being served with an emergency ex-parte temporary restraining order, an immediate freeze on all marital assets by order of the King County Superior Court, and a formal summons for a deposition regarding identity theft and grand larceny."

"What?" Derek gasped, his eyes darting from the deputy to the documents. "A freeze? You can't freeze my accounts! My architectural firm’s payroll is drawn from my commercial account!"

"Your commercial account is an extension of V.M. Logistics, Mr. Mercer," Lauren smiled, stepping into the room like a predator entering a cage. "Which was funded entirely by fraudulent transfers from my client’s corporate bonus accounts through a forged identity scheme. As of 4:00 PM this afternoon, the federal banking regulator has locked every single routing number associated with your name, your sister-in-law’s name, and your mother-in-law’s home equity line."

My mother let out a strangled, choked sound, clutching her chest as she collapsed onto the couch. "My house... my equity line... Claire, please! I am your mother! You can't let them take my house!"

I walked over to the couch, looking down at the woman who had given birth to me, the woman who had watched me cry over negative pregnancy tests for years while secretly plotting to give my inheritance to my sister.

"You sold my father’s legacy for a kitchen remodel, Mom," I said, my voice dead and cold. "You signed the documents Derek gave you, knowing they were forged in my name. The bank has already initiated the fraud recovery protocol. By tomorrow morning, the foreclosure process on this house begins. I suggest you start looking for a small apartment. Maybe Valerie has room for you in her penthouse."

"Claire, please!" Valerie sobbed, clutching the baby tightly against her chest as if using the child as a human shield against the legal onslaught. "The baby has nothing to do with this! We need the Bellevue apartment! We have nowhere to go!"

"The Bellevue apartment lease has been terminated due to fraud, Valerie," I said, looking at my sister without a single ounce of pity left in my heart. "The landlord was quite horrified to discover his primary guarantor was a woman who had her identity stolen. You have forty-eight hours to vacate the premises before the marshals remove your luxury stroller and your custom furniture onto the sidewalk."

Derek stepped toward Lauren, his fists clenched, sweat pouring down his neck. "This won't hold up in court, Vance! I have equity in the Bellevue property! I have partnerships at the firm!"

"Not anymore, Derek," Lauren replied smoothly. "We sent a complete copy of the forgery and embezzlement file to the senior partners of your architectural firm two hours ago. Given that you used the firm’s secure servers to execute the identity theft of an executive at a major logistics corporation, the board held an emergency meeting. You’ve been stripped of your partnership, terminated for cause, and the firm is currently preparing a secondary lawsuit against you to protect their reputation."

Derek looked at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. The realization of his total, absolute ruin was settling into his bones. In the span of ten minutes, he had gone from a rising corporate star with a secret family to an unemployed, broke, and legally radioactive fugitive.

"Have a wonderful evening, everyone," I said, turning my back on the wreckage of my family. I walked out the front door into the clean, crisp Seattle air, leaving the sounds of their desperate screaming behind me.
