CHAPTER 2: THE MILLION-DOLLAR CONSPIRACY INSIDE THE HOSPITAL

Nobody in Room 407 breathed for several seconds.

The screen still glowed in front of Richard Hale.

EXTERNAL SEDATION DETECTED.

His hands immediately began shaking.

“No…”

He whispered it to himself.

No.

Impossible.

Someone had to be wrong.

Machines malfunction.

Software glitches happen.

Doctors make mistakes.

Anything was easier to believe than the alternative.

Because the alternative was horrifying.

Someone had been keeping his daughter unconscious.

Deliberately.

Then Hannah's fingers twitched again.

Richard immediately grabbed her hand.

“Hannah?”

Her lips trembled.

Then nothing.

The monitor returned to its steady rhythm.

Then footsteps approached.

Fast.

Richard quickly hid the photograph Samuel had sent him.

Dr. Marcus Lennox entered.

Veronica followed behind him.

Both looked tense.

Almost too tense.

Marcus walked directly to the machine.

Then his face changed.

“What happened?”

Richard watched him carefully.

“What do you mean?”

Marcus pointed.

“This alert.”

Then he quickly pressed several buttons.

Too quickly.

Deleting it.

Richard noticed immediately.

“Why are you removing it?”

Marcus froze.

Only for a second.

Then he smiled.

“False positive.”

Richard didn't answer.

Marcus continued.

“These systems malfunction all the time.”

Richard simply stared at him.

For the first time in twenty years of friendship…

He saw something he had never seen before.

Fear.

Marcus was afraid.

Then Veronica walked closer.

“You need to go home tonight.”

Again.

The same sentence.

Go home.

Richard smiled politely.

“No.”

Veronica's expression stiffened.

“You're exhausted.”

“No.”

“Richard…”

“No.”

The room instantly grew quiet.

Because Richard Hale never said no.

Not to Veronica.

Not to Marcus.

Not to anyone he trusted.

Then his phone vibrated again.

Unknown sender.

Samuel.

LOOK UNDER THE BLUE FOLDER.

NOW.

Richard glanced at Marcus.

The doctor was busy checking the IV lines.

Richard slowly opened the bedside cabinet.

Inside sat a blue folder.

Hospital reports.

Blood work.

Charts.

Nothing unusual.

Then he opened the back pocket.

His heart nearly stopped.

There were two versions of Hannah's records.

Two.

One official.

One hidden.

He read the first.

Patient remains neurologically unresponsive.

Then the second.

Patient demonstrates intermittent awareness and response.

Richard froze.

Response?

He turned the page.

March 3.

Patient opened eyes for three seconds.

March 8.

Patient attempted verbal communication.

March 16.

Patient responded to auditory stimuli.

None of this had been shared with him.

His hands started shaking violently.

Then he reached the last page.

Recommendation:

Continue sedation protocol.

Patient must remain medically controlled.

He looked up instantly.

Marcus was staring at him.

Both men froze.

Then Marcus slowly smiled.

“That's confidential.”

Richard stood.

“What is this?”

Marcus inhaled.

“Richard…”

“What is this?!”

Marcus remained calm.

Too calm.

“Sit down.”

Richard exploded.

“No.”

His voice echoed throughout the room.

“YOU TOLD ME SHE NEVER RESPONDED.”

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Keep your voice down.”

Richard stepped closer.

“Why?”

Marcus didn't answer.

Then Veronica suddenly intervened.

“Because you're emotional.”

Richard looked at her.

Then laughed.

Not happy laughter.

Disbelief.

“Emotional?”

He held up the papers.

“She's my daughter.”

Veronica crossed her arms.

“And we're trying to save her.”

Then Richard asked the question.

“From what?”

Nobody answered.

That silence said everything.

Then another voice spoke from the doorway.

“From losing money.”

Everyone turned.

Samuel stood there.

No guards.

No fear.

Just anger.

Real anger.

“That's why.”

Veronica immediately snapped.

“Who let him back in?”

Samuel ignored her completely.

Instead, he pointed at the folder.

“Read page seven.”

Richard flipped pages.

Then his blood turned cold.

Project Continuity Program.

Compensation value: $280 million.

His daughter's name sat underneath.

Beneficiary status: Active.

Then he saw something even worse.

A legal agreement.

If Hannah remained medically incapacitated…

Control of her trust fund temporarily transferred to Veronica Hale.

Richard stared at her.

“What is this?”

Veronica immediately looked nervous.

“Richard…”

“What is this?”

Marcus stepped in.

“Let us explain.”

But Samuel shouted first.

“No.”

The entire room went silent.

Then the little boy spoke words that changed everything.

“They were testing medicine.”

Everyone froze.

Samuel pointed toward the IV machine.

“On her.”

Richard slowly turned.

Marcus instantly panicked.

“This is ridiculous.”

Samuel shook his head.

“No.”

Then he reached into his pocket.

And pulled out a hospital bracelet.

Everyone stared.

Patient Name:

Samuel Reed.

Richard looked confused.

“What?”

Samuel swallowed.

“I was here too.”

The room froze.

“When?”

“Two years ago.”

Marcus immediately lost color.

Samuel looked directly at Richard.

“They used me first.”

Richard felt the world spinning.

“What?”

Samuel nodded.

“My mom died.”

“My dad disappeared.”

“I became invisible.”

“Nobody came looking.”

His voice trembled.

“So they chose me.”

The room became silent.

“They said it was treatment.”

“But it wasn't.”

Then he pointed at Hannah.

“They switched to rich kids.”

Veronica gasped.

“That's a lie.”

Samuel looked directly at her.

“No.”

Then he said something terrifying.

“You told Marcus wealthy patients are easier to hide.”

Richard froze.

Veronica's face turned white.

“How dare you.”

Samuel didn't stop.

“You said rich people trust doctors more than poor people.”

The room went completely silent.

Then suddenly…

Another voice entered.

“Because he heard me say it.”

Everyone turned.

A nurse stood at the doorway.

Older.

Terrified.

Crying.

Nurse Elaine.

“I heard everything.”

She burst into tears.

“For months.”

“I was too afraid to report them.”

Then she handed Richard a flash drive.

“Take this.”

Marcus immediately lunged toward her.

“No!”

Security alarms suddenly erupted.

Doors locked automatically.

Hospital administrators poured into the hallway.

Because someone had already called the authorities.

Samuel.

The little boy smiled softly.

“I did it an hour ago.”

Everyone froze.

Then dozens of police officers arrived.

The room exploded into chaos.

Marcus panicked.

Veronica backed away.

Then suddenly…

A voice interrupted everything.

Weak.

Tiny.

But real.

“Dad?”

The room stopped moving.

Richard spun around.

Hannah's eyes were open.

Fully open.

She looked exhausted.

Scared.

But awake.

Richard instantly dropped to his knees beside her.

“Oh my God.”

Tears exploded down his face.

“Hannah…”

She smiled weakly.

“Hi.”

Then she whispered something that made everyone go cold.

“Aunt Veronica knew I could hear everything.”

The room went silent.

Then Hannah slowly looked toward Samuel.

And smiled.

“You came back.”

Samuel smiled too.

“Yeah.”

Then Hannah whispered…

May you like

“I knew you would.”
