Chapter 3: The Gathering of Witnesses

Chapter 3: The Gathering of Witnesses

The basement library of Marcus Hale’s legal offices was filled with the scent of old paper and fresh ink. Boxes of unredacted medical files, corporate manifests, and internal e-mails from Vance Medical Technologies lined the walls. Iris sat at the center table, wearing a simple navy blue sweater that covered her scars, her face calm and clear under the warm glow of the desk lamps.
Across from her sat Dr. Sarah Lin, the former chief medical officer of the Aegis project, a woman who had vanished from the medical community nine years ago after suddenly resigning from her position at Vance Medical.
"I didn't think you would ever find me, Iris," Dr. Lin said, her hands trembling as she clutched a mug of hot tea. "After the accident... after what Julian did to you... he told me that if I ever spoke to the press or the medical board, he would ensure my medical license was revoked and that my family’s visa status would be compromised. I was terrified. I took the settlement money and hid in New Mexico."
"I know, Sarah," Iris said softly, her hand reaching across the table to gently touch the older doctor's arm. "I don't blame you. Julian was a master at using fear to isolate people. He made everyone believe they were alone in the dark. But the light is finally back on."
Marcus Hale entered the room, holding a freshly printed deposition transcript. "We just finished interviewing the secondary laboratory technician, Sarah. He’s fully cracked. He’s confirmed that Julian personally supervised the destruction of the prototype’s thermal telemetry data. The prosecutor is offering him a immunity deal in exchange for testifying at the federal grand jury hearing next Tuesday."

"What about Nora?" Iris asked, her voice calm, devoid of the jealousy or anger that Julian had expected from her during their marriage.
"Nora’s legal representation has already reached out to our office," Marcus said with a dry smile. "The moment she realized Julian’s personal bank accounts were empty and that she was facing five years as an accessory to money laundering, her 'eternal love' for your husband completely dissolved. She’s agreed to turn over every text message, e-mail, and voice note Julian sent her over the past two years. Specifically, the ones where he brags about how he was going to use your father’s estate funds to buy her a penthouse in Paris while forcing you to sign the post-nuptial property waivers."
Dr. Lin looked at Iris, her eyes filled with a mixture of awe and profound respect. "You survived it all, Iris. The explosion, the surgeries, the isolation... and then ten years of living with the man who did it to you. How did you stay sane in that house?"
Iris looked down at the pale tracks of tissue visible at her wrist where the sweater sleeve had slipped back slightly.
"Because I knew that anger wasn't going to save me, Sarah," Iris said, her voice dropping into a quiet, unshakeable register. "If I had fought him ten years ago, he would have used his money and his public relations team to destroy my credibility. He would have had me committed to a psychiatric facility. I had to wait until he was so confident in his own power that he became sloppy. I had to let him believe he had won everything so that when I finally pulled the thread, the entire tapestry would unravel at once."

The glass doors of the library opened, and an assistant walked in, holding a tablet. "Ms. Vance, the federal grand jury has just returned the true bill. Dr. Julian Vance has been formally indicted on fourteen felony counts. The judge has set his bail at five million dollars, cash only, with a mandatory passport surrender."

Iris stood up from the table, walking over to the large windows that looked out onto the city streets below. The flashing blue lights of police cruisers were visible in the distance, surrounding the corporate tower of Vance Medical Technologies. For ten long years, she had felt like a ghost walking through her own life, a shadow hidden behind high collars and expensive silk scarves.
But tonight, as the wind rattled the glass panes of the library, Iris took a deep, full breath. Her lungs didn't hurt anymore. The cage had finally broken open.
