Chapter 2: Secrets in the Silk

Chapter 2: Secrets in the Silk

The morning after the gala, the Beaumont mansion felt less like a palace and more like a mausoleum. The tabloids were already exploding with rumors about the "Locket Incident," though Eleanor had paid millions overnight to keep the speculation classified as a bizarre prank.
Vanessa sat in the morning room, untouched tea cooling in front of her. She hadn't slept a wink. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Lily’s tear-streaked face and felt the horrifying guilt of having shoved her own flesh and blood to the floor.
"You need to stop brooding, Vanessa," Eleanor said smoothly, walking into the room while adjusting her pearl earrings. "We have a luncheon with the mayor today. Your father’s legacy depends on our flawless reputation."

"My father's legacy?" Vanessa stood up, slamming her teacup down, spilling the liquid across the mahogany table. "Dad always told me I had a little sister, Eleanor! He told me she died in the hospital fire when I was four! But that locket... Dad had those custom-made. There are no other copies in the world. Why did that girl have it?"
Eleanor didn't blink. "Your father was a sentimental man who succumbed to grief. That girl is a grifter who likely found the locket in an antique shop or stole it from the wreckage years ago. I will not have you ruin your engagement to Ethan over a charity case."
"The engagement is a lie too!" Vanessa shouted. "Ethan doesn't love me! He loves her! I saw the way he looked at her last night. And honestly? Right now, I don't care about Ethan. I want a DNA test."
Eleanor’s demeanor shifted from cold aristocrat to venomous viper. She stepped close to Vanessa, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Listen to me very carefully, child. You enjoy this mansion? You enjoy the clothes, the prestige, the safety of the Beaumont name? You get all of it because you are my sole heir. If you bring a street rat into this house, you divide the inheritance, you ruin our stock value, and you destroy everything I have built. You will drop this. Now."
Meanwhile, on the other side of the city, Lily sat in her cramped, damp studio apartment. Her shoulder ached from where the security guards had gripped her, and her heart felt completely hollow. Ethan had called her fifty times, but she had turned her phone off. What was there left to say? He belonged to a world that chewed people like her up and spat them out.

A sudden, sharp knock on her door startled her. Expecting Ethan, Lily braced herself and pulled the door open.
It wasn't Ethan.
Vanessa stood in the dingy hallway, wearing a heavy trench coat and oversized sunglasses to hide her face from the paparazzi. She looked wildly out of place against the peeling wallpaper of Lily’s apartment complex.

The two sisters stared at each other through the doorway—separated by years of privilege, resentment, and a massive wealth gap, yet bound by the undeniable pull of blood.
"Can I come in?" Vanessa asked, her voice uncharacteristically vulnerable. "Please, Lily. We need to talk."
