Chapter 7 - The Unravelling

The flashing blue and red lights illuminated the grand facade of the Sterling estate, casting a dramatic, colorful glow across the manicured lawns. Within an hour, the sanctuary of the city’s most powerful judge had been transformed into an active federal crime scene.
Meredith arrived twenty minutes later, having been called by Marcus Kane. She sprinted through the front doors, her face pale, her breathing shallow as she saw the State Trooper vehicles blocking the driveway.
“Harrison! What is going on?!” Meredith screamed as she ran into the foyer, seeing Chloe sitting in the back of a CPS vehicle, wrapped in a warm blanket, drinking juice while a female officer spoke with her gently. “Why are the police here? What did you do to my father?!”
I walked out of the mansion’s front entrance, accompanied by Detective Miller, the state investigator handling the case. I looked at my wife, seeing the intense, desperate denial written across her face.
“Meredith, come with me,” I said quietly, taking her by the arm and leading her into the privacy of the surveillance van.
“Harrison, let me go! My father is inside being questioned like a criminal!” she shouted, tears spilling over her cheeks. “He’s a judge! He’s a good man!”
“Meredith, look at the monitor,” I said, pointing to the screen inside the van.
Marcus Kane hit the play button on the recorded file from that afternoon.
The van fell into a suffocating, horrific silence as Meredith watched her father slam the ruler onto the piano. She watched him scream at her eight-year-old daughter. And then, she watched in absolute horror as Richard Sterling violently grabbed Chloe, his fingers digging into her small body while Chloe screamed in pain.
Meredith’s hands flew to her mouth. A sharp, guttural gasp escaped her throat. “No... no, that’s... that’s not him. He wouldn't...”
“He’s been doing it since February, Meredith,” I said, my voice thick with emotion as I pulled up the medical photographs of Chloe’s back on my phone, holding them up to her face. “Look at her back, Meredith. Look at the handprints your father left on our daughter. He threatened to use his judicial connections to destroy our family if she ever told us the truth.”
Meredith stared at the photos of the bruises, then back at the video of her father’s monstrous outburst. The psychological dam that had protected her image of her perfect father for thirty-five years shattered in an instant. She collapsed onto the floor of the surveillance van, sobbing hysterically, her entire world unravelling into a nightmare of profound guilt and grief.

“I... I left her there,” Meredith wailed, pulling her hair with her hands. “I forced her to go to his house! Oh my god, Harrison... what have I done to our little girl?!”
I dropped to my knees, wrapping my arms around my broken wife, holding her tightly as she wept for the innocence her father had stolen from our family. “We’re going to fix this, Meredith. Together. But first, we have to ensure he never walks free again.”
