CHAPTER 4 – THE MAN WHO HAD NEVER BEEN AFRAID… FINALLY WAS
The silence inside the abandoned cathedral warehouse lasted only a heartbeat.
Then everything exploded.
Roman Castellano's bodyguards reached beneath their jackets almost simultaneously.
Dante's men reacted faster.
"No!" Evelyn shouted.
Her voice echoed through the cavernous building before the first weapon cleared a holster.
Dante raised one hand.
"Nobody fires."
His calm authority sliced through the chaos.
Roman laughed quietly.

"You've gone soft."
"No," Dante replied. "I'm simply tired of cleaning blood off expensive floors."
Roman's eyes never left Evelyn.
"You came here because of her."
"I came because you asked for a meeting."
"You brought twenty men."
"You brought thirty."
Neither man blinked.
Neither looked away.
The tension was unbearable.
Evelyn realized something terrifying.
Neither mafia leader actually wanted a gunfight.
Not yet.
They wanted something else.
Control.
Roman slowly straightened his jacket.
"I'll make this simple."
He reached inside his coat.
Every gun instantly pointed at him.
Instead of drawing a weapon...
He removed a thick cream-colored envelope.
He tossed it across the conference table.
It slid directly toward Evelyn.
She stared at it.
"What is it?"
Roman smiled.
"Your inheritance."
She frowned.
"I don't want anything from you."
"It isn't from me."
Dante's expression changed.
Barely.
But Evelyn caught it.
Roman had finally said something unexpected.
"It belonged to your father."
The room became completely silent.
"My father?"
Roman nodded.
"Open it."
Evelyn hesitated.
Dante quietly said,
"You don't have to."
"I know."
But she couldn't stop herself.
Her fingers lifted the envelope.
Inside...
Was another letter.
The handwriting froze her heartbeat.
She recognized it immediately.
Her father's.
To my daughter Evelyn,
If you are reading this, then I have failed to protect you.
Her vision blurred.
She hadn't seen her father's handwriting in four years.
Her hands began trembling.
Roman watched her carefully.
She swallowed.
The Castellano marriage was never meant to imprison you.
It was meant to keep you alive.
Evelyn stopped breathing.
"What..."
She looked up.
Roman wasn't smiling anymore.
Neither was Dante.
She continued.
There are people far more dangerous than Roman Castellano.
If they discover what our family possesses, they will kill everyone connected to us.
Roman agreed to marry you because I begged him to.
"No..."
Evelyn whispered.
"No..."
Her father had begged Roman?
Impossible.
Everything she believed...
Everything...
Started collapsing.
She kept reading.
Roman promised he would protect you, even if you hated him forever.
Evelyn's hands began shaking violently.
"No."
Roman quietly looked away.
But if Roman ever becomes the danger instead of the shield...
Run.
Find Dante Vale.
He knows the truth.
The paper slipped from Evelyn's fingers.
It floated onto the table.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Finally...
Evelyn looked at Dante.
"You knew."
He closed his eyes.
"Yes."
"You knew this whole time?"
"Yes."
"And you said nothing?"
"I promised your father."
She stepped backward.
"No..."
"You let me believe Roman destroyed my life."
Dante answered quietly,
"He did."
Roman looked toward the ceiling.
"I suppose I deserve that."
Evelyn stared at him.
"What does that mean?"
Roman slowly removed his wedding ring.
He rolled it between his fingers.
"Your father asked me to marry you."
"I know."
"I accepted."
"I know."
"I intended to protect you."
Her voice cracked.
"And then?"
Roman laughed bitterly.
"And then I became exactly what he feared."
The confession stunned everyone.
Even Roman's own guards looked shocked.
He continued.
"Power changes people."
His voice sounded older now.
"I told myself every cruelty was necessary."
"I convinced myself fear kept you alive."
"I justified every lie."
His eyes finally met hers.
"After a while..."
"I couldn't remember where the act ended..."
"And where the monster began."
Evelyn felt tears filling her eyes.
Not forgiveness.
Grief.
Because for the first time...
Roman sounded honest.
Dante quietly walked toward the enormous windows.
"The truth isn't finished."
Roman nodded.
"No."
"It isn't."
He reached into another pocket.
This time...
He removed a small brass key.
Old.
Worn smooth with age.
He placed it beside her father's letter.
"What is this?"
"A safety deposit box."
"Where?"
"First National Bank."
"What does it contain?"
Roman answered softly.
"Everything your father died protecting."
Dante turned sharply.
"You still haven't told her."
Roman looked exhausted.
"You tell her."
"No."
"It has to come from you."
Roman closed his eyes.
Then...
Very quietly...
He spoke.
"Your father wasn't a businessman."
Evelyn frowned.
"I know that."
"He worked for the federal government."
"I know."
"No."
Roman shook his head.
"You don't."
"He wasn't an accountant."
"He wasn't an advisor."
"He wasn't retired."
"He spent twenty-seven years infiltrating organized crime."
The room froze.
Evelyn couldn't process the words.
"What?"
"He was undercover."
"No."
"Yes."
"No."
"My father sold construction equipment."
Roman smiled sadly.
"That was his cover."
Her knees nearly gave out.
"My father..."
"...was federal?"
Dante answered.
"One of the best."
She stared between them.
Then everything suddenly made horrible sense.
The secret phone calls.
The unexplained disappearances.
The locked office.
The hidden documents.
The coded notebooks.
Her father hadn't been hiding money.
He'd been hiding evidence.
Roman continued.
"When your father realized someone inside the government had been selling agent identities..."
"...he knew his days were numbered."
"So he made arrangements."
"The marriage."
"The bank box."
"The letters."
"The escape routes."
"And me."
Evelyn whispered,
"He trusted you."
Roman nodded once.
"I betrayed that trust."
Another silence settled over the warehouse.
Finally...
Dante spoke.
"We're running out of time."
Roman looked at him.
"They found us?"
"Yes."
Roman laughed once.
"I wondered how long."
Evelyn frowned.
"Who found us?"
Neither man answered immediately.
That frightened her more than anything.
Finally Dante spoke.
"The people your father was actually investigating."
Roman quietly added,
"And they are nothing like us."
A deafening explosion shattered every window in the warehouse.
Glass erupted inward.
Bodyguards dove for cover.
The lights went out.
Smoke flooded the room.
Someone screamed.
Automatic gunfire erupted outside.
Not from Roman's men.
Not from Dante's.
Someone else.
Someone bigger.
More organized.
More deadly.
Dante grabbed Evelyn.
"Down!"
Another explosion shook the building.
Concrete rained from the ceiling.
Roman pulled a pistol.
Not toward Dante.
Toward the entrance.
"They're here."
One of his captains shouted,
"Boss!"
"Over fifty shooters!"
Dante cursed.
"They brought everyone."
Roman looked directly at Evelyn.
His voice remained strangely calm.
"Take the key."
She stared at him.
"Roman—"
"Take it!"
She grabbed the brass key.
Roman smiled.
For the first time...
Without cruelty.
Without manipulation.
Without arrogance.
Just...
Tired.
"If your father could see you now..."
"...he'd be proud."
Another explosion tore through the warehouse wall.
Sunlight burst through clouds of dust.
Armored vehicles rolled into view.
Men in black tactical gear poured inside.
No insignias.
No badges.
No mercy.
One of them raised a loudspeaker.
"Roman Castellano."
"Dante Vale."
"Evelyn Moretti."
"You are all ordered to surrender."
Dante's face hardened.
Roman slowly chambered a round.
Then he quietly said the words that changed everything.
"They're not here to arrest us."
He looked at Evelyn.
May you like
"They're here to erase every person who knows the truth."
