Chapter 4 - The Sound of Silence

The air inside the presidential suite was thick with the scent of cheap panic. Ethan had spent the last two hours pacing the length of the marble floor, his phone pressed to his ear as he listened to the same automated recording over and over again: “The number you have dialed is no longer in service or has been restricted by the primary account holder.”

"She changed the plan," Ethan yelled, slamming the phone down onto the glass coffee table. "The bitch actually took me off the phone plan. I can’t call the office, I can’t call the bank—I’m roaming on a temporary international data block."

Diane was sitting on the edge of the king-sized bed, her face white beneath her expensive bronzer. "Call your partner, Bradley. He has access to the corporate liquidity fund. Tell him to wire the cash to the resort immediately."

Ethan dialed Bradley’s personal cell number from the hotel’s landline phone, which Alejandro had graciously left active for "domestic financial resolutions only."

The phone rang four times before a ragged, breathless voice answered. "Ethan? Where the hell are you?"

"Bradley, thank god. Listen, I’m down in Cancún and the merchant terminals are glitching out. They’re saying the accounts are frozen. I need you to wire forty-five hundred from the secondary line at Chase—"

"Ethan, shut up," Bradley interrupted, his voice shaking so badly I could hear the rattle of paper in the background. "There is no Chase line. The sheriff’s department showed up at the showroom an hour ago with a corporate asset freeze signed by Judge Albright. They’ve padlocked the luxury fleet, Ethan. The Lamborghinis, the Ferraris—they’re being towed to a municipal impound lot as disputed marital assets."

Ethan’s knees buckled. He dropped onto the edge of the bed beside his mother, the landline receiver slipping slightly in his sweaty palm. "What? On what grounds? The business is registered under my name!"

"The motion was filed by Marianne Vance," Bradley spat, his tone turning venomous. "She attached a forensic accounting audit of your wife’s inheritance trust, Ethan. The forensic team tracked four hundred and fifty grand that you moved into Apex using forged signatures. The court didn't just freeze the business; they’ve issued a fraud alert to the state attorney's office. The prosecutors are looking at criminal conversion charges, Ethan. I’m packing my things right now. I’m not going to jail for your vanity project."

"Bradley, wait! You can't just leave—"

The line went dead.

Ethan looked at his mother. The silence in the room was absolute now, broken only by the distant, mocking sound of the Mexican surf outside the balcony.

"What did he say?" Diane whispered, her fingers twisting the gold rings on her left hand until the skin turned gray. "Ethan, what did Bradley say?"

"The business is gone, Mom," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a flat, horizontal line of shock. "Nora found the folder. She found the trust transfers. She’s frozen everything. We don't have a cent."

Diane stood up, her aristocratic posture returning for a brief, delusional second. "Then we go home. We walk into that house, we take the baby, and we tell her that if she doesn't drop the legal action, she’ll never see you again. We use the child, Ethan. A mother always breaks when it comes to her child."

"With what money, Mom?" Ethan looked up, his eyes wide and hollow. "The flight home is five days from now. To change the tickets to today requires a fee of eight hundred dollars per passenger. We have twelve dollars in cash and two pieces of frozen plastic."

Diane stared at him, her lips trembling as the reality of their isolation finally broke through her vanity. The woman who had spent centuries worth of metaphorical birth-in-a-field rhetoric was now trapped in a foreign resort with nothing but an oversized straw hat and a gold watch that wouldn't buy a bag of peanuts at the airport terminal.
