Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the House of Cards

The confrontation between Ethan and Madison at their airport motel was reportedly so violent that the management called the police.

According to the police report, which Robert obtained the following day, Ethan had demanded to see Madison’s medical records and her phone logs. When she refused, he began throwing her designer suitcases out into the mud of the parking lot. In her rage and panic, Madison had finally screamed the truth at him: that she had never loved him, that she had only wanted his father’s money, and that the child she was carrying wasn't his.

The revelation broke what little sanity Ethan had left.

Two days later, the federal indictment was officially handed down. Ethan Vance was arrested at a greasy spoon diner down the street from the motel, holding a duffel bag filled with his remaining luxury watches and ten thousand dollars in cash—an amateurish, desperate attempt to flee the country before his passport could be flagged.

As he was being processed into federal custody, Madison filed for divorce. Her dream of a high-society life in Seattle had evaporated into thin air. Her mother’s retirement fund was gone, her reputation was completely ruined, and she was pregnant, alone, and facing eviction from even the low-end motel.

I spent those weeks in absolute tranquility.

The nursery at my mother’s estate was completed. It was a beautiful, sunlit room painted in soft sage greens and creams, filled with handmade wooden furniture and books that had belonged to my own father. Every afternoon, I walked through the gardens, feeling the crisp air of late spring turning into summer. The shadow of my old marriage had completely lifted, replaced by a deep, grounded sense of purpose.

"The federal judge denied Ethan bail," Robert informed me during a weekend visit to the estate. "They cited him as a significant flight risk given the cash and assets found on him during his arrest. He’ll remain in custody until his trial in the fall."

"And Madison?" I asked, pouring him a cup of tea.

"She’s moved back into her mother's small two-bedroom apartment in a remote suburb," Robert said. "She’s tried to contact several local media outlets to sell her story—playing the victim of Ethan's financial crimes—but no one will buy it. The Chronicle’s piece made it very clear she was the mistress who helped destroy a family. Public sympathy for her is at absolute zero."

"I don't want her destroyed physically, Robert," I said softly, looking down at my stomach. "Ensure her medical expenses for the delivery are quietly taken care of through an anonymous charitable donation. The child she’s carrying didn't choose its parents."

Robert looked at me with deep admiration. "You have a remarkably generous heart, Olivia. After everything she did to you..."

"It’s not generosity, Robert. It’s closure. I want no debts owed between us—karmic or otherwise. When my son is born, I want his world to be entirely clean."

That night, as I sat by the window watching the stars appear through a break in the Seattle clouds, I felt a sharp, rhythmic tightening in my abdomen. I reached for my phone and dialed my doctor.

It was time.
