Chapter 8 - The Winter Gala

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a sea of black ties, diamond necklaces, and the soft, clinking sound of crystal champagne flutes. The high society of Chicago had gathered for the annual winter charity event, but everyone knew the real reason the room was packed to capacity.
It was the public debut of Evangeline Clara Vance.
When the double doors at the top of the grand marble staircase opened, the orchestra stopped playing for a split second, a collective gasp rippling through the crowded floor below.
I stood at the top of the stairs, wearing an asymmetric midnight-blue velvet gown that flowed around my body like moving water. My hair was styled into an elegant chignon, exposing the crescent birthmark beneath my left ear and the brilliant white-gold lines of the Aethelgard Phoenix that caught the light of the crystal chandeliers like a starburst.
Alistair stood beside me, his arm linked firmly in mine, his silver head held high with a pride so intense it seemed to radiate through the entire room.
As we walked down the steps, the crowd parted like the red sea, local business leaders, politicians, and old real estate partners of Daniel’s family bowing their heads in unison as we passed. Many of them had ignored my calls when I was poor; many of them had laughed at Daniel’s jokes about his "charity case" wife at country club luncheons.
Now, they couldn't even look me in the eye without their hands shaking.
"Miss Vance," the mayor of the city stepped forward, his hand extended, a nervous smile plastered across his face. "We are absolutely honored by your return. The city is ready to assist your new foundation in any capacity necessary."
"The capacity I require from your office, Mr. Mayor," I said, my voice carrying that smooth, razor-sharp Vance authority through the quiet circle that had formed around us, "is total transparency. The building inspectors who accepted Daniel Mercer’s bribes have been cleared from the zoning board. I expect their replacements to be selected by my legal team by Monday morning."
The mayor’s face turned a faint shade of grey, but he nodded quickly, backing away with a deep bow. "Of course... whatever Vance Global requires."
I looked across the ballroom, through the massive glass windows that looked out onto the snow-covered streets of the city. Down there, far below the luxury of the hotel, the buses were still rumbling, the rain and snow were still falling, but the world felt different now. It felt balanced.

"You handled that beautifully, Evangeline," Alistair whispered, handing me a glass of sparkling water. "Your mother would have been dancing on the tables by now, but your clinical execution... that is all me."
"We are a team, Dad," I smiled, looking up at him. "The past is dead. The future belongs to us."
