Chapter 5 - The Legal War

The weeks that followed were a masterclass in corporate and legal warfare. Graham and Vivian didn't go quietly; desperate people rarely do. They hired a flashy, low-tier television lawyer named Roger Sterling, a man who loved cameras more than he loved the law, and attempted to launch a massive public relations counteroffensive.

They appeared on a local morning news program, Vivian weeping into a handkerchief while Graham held up a photoshopped wedding album.

“My wife is using her immense corporate power to crush a traditional New York family,” Graham lied smoothly to the anchor, trying to project the image of a betrayed, heartbroken father. “She hid her multi-billion-dollar identity from me for our entire marriage. She trapped us in a financial arrangement we didn't understand, and now she’s keeping my beautiful twin boys away from their loving father and grandmother. I just want my sons back. I just want my family.”

I watched the broadcast from the secure conference room of Vale International’s legal tower, Marcus sitting beside me with a team of media analysts.

“Should we release the statement, ma'am?” the PR director asked, her finger hovering over the upload button.

“No,” I said, leaning back in my chair, watching Graham’s performance on the screen. “Let him dig the hole a little deeper. The public loves a tragic father story until they see the actual footage. Marcus, do we have the security logs from the upstate mansion?”

“We have everything, Evelyn,” Marcus smiled, a predatory gleam in his eyes. “The high-definition exterior cameras captured every single detail of that night. The audio is crystal clear. We have Vivian shouting the words 'take your bastards with you.' We have Graham shoving the suitcase into your ribs. We even have the digital thermometer log showing the outside temperature was precisely fourteen degrees Fahrenheit when they pushed you onto the porch.”

“Perfect,” I said. “And what about the forensic audit of Graham’s corporate expenses?”

Marcus opened a thick, blue folder. “It’s far worse than we thought. Over the last eighteen months, Graham opened three separate secret credit lines using the Harrington Luxe corporate seal—lines that were ultimately guaranteed by our parent fund. He used that money to purchase a luxury condo in Miami for a young woman named Chloe, a lifestyle influencer. We have hotel receipts, flight logs, and wire transfers dating back to before you even became pregnant.”

I felt a slight, sharp pinch in my chest, but it passed quickly, replaced by a cold, solid clarity. I hadn't lost a husband; I had simply removed a cancer from my life.

“File the countersuit for corporate fraud, embezzlement, and child endangerment,” I ordered flatly. “And send the security footage from the night of the blizzard directly to every major news network in the country. Let’s see how much the morning show anchor loves him when they see him throwing ten-day-old infants into a snowstorm.”

The impact of the security footage release was catastrophic for the Harringtons. Within an hour of it airing on Good Morning America, public sympathy vanished instantly. The internet exploded with an unprecedented wave of fury against Graham and Vivian. The hashtag #TheHarringtonMonsters trended number one worldwide. The flashy television lawyer dropped them as clients within ninety minutes, releasing a statement that he had been "misled by his clients regarding the material facts of the domestic situation."

When Graham tried to walk into his local country club to meet an old friend for lunch, he was stopped at the gate by the manager and informed that his membership had been permanently revoked due to "conduct unbecoming of a member."

They were becoming ghosts in the very city they thought they owned.
