Chapter 6 - The Strategy of the Ash

The county detention center’s high-security visitation lounge was a cold room of gray cinder blocks and scratched Plexiglas windows that smelled permanently of pine bleach and institutional despair.

I sat at the steel table, the weight of the room making the air feel heavy. I had left the Hale estate that morning, refusing to let Ethan accompany me into the prison block. This was a ledger I needed to balance entirely on my own.

The iron door on the opposite side of the glass buzzed with a loud, grinding screech. Ryan Whitmore walked into the room, his wrists chained to a heavy leather belt around his midsection, his orange prison jumpsuit oversized and wrinkled. The polished, golden boy of the country clubs was gone. His hair was greasy and unwashed, a rough shadow of stubble covering his pale, hollow cheeks, his eyes bloodshot and dark with the frantic terror of a caged animal.

He slammed his chained hands against the glass as he sat down, the metal links rattling loudly against the steel frame. He grabbed the plastic telephone receiver with trembling fingers.

"Claire!" he gasped, his voice cracking with a manic, desperate frequency. "You have to help me! You have to talk to the federal prosecutors! They’re trying to charge me as a principal co-conspirator in the chemical weapons processing line! I didn't know about the Rotterdam shipments, I swear to God! Mom handled the shipping accounts! I just managed the hospital logistics!"

I slowly picked up my receiver, holding it to my ear with a calm, clinical expression that seemed to terrify him more than a scream would have.

"You knew about the oil, Ryan," I said softly, my voice flat. "You stood in that kitchen and looked at the pot before she lifted it. You knew exactly what was inside it because you were the one who signed the twelve-million-dollar equipment override from my father’s trust to buy the fractionation columns."

"I did it for us, Claire!" he cried, his face pressing against the scratched glass, his breath fogging the surface. "The company was going under again! The board was going to oust me as CEO! Mom said if we had the proprietary defense contract, we’d be untouchable for fifty years! We were going to buy that house in Maui you wanted! I did it for our family!"

"I was your family, Ryan," I whispered, looking at him through the glass and feeling an overwhelming sense of pity where my love used to live. "But you didn't see a wife when you looked at me. You saw a bank account. You saw a shield to hide your mother’s treason behind."

"Claire... please..." he whimpered, tears finally spilling over his dirty eyelashes, tracking through the dust on his cheeks. "Talk to Ethan Hale. He has the political connections to get my bail approved. If I stay in this facility... the other inmates... they know who my family is. They know what we did to the burn wing. They won't let me survive the night."

"The burn wing you tried to use as an incendiary laboratory is now a fully public, federal non-profit sanctuary, Ryan," I told him, my voice dropping into an absolute, un-appealable register. "Dr. Hale and I have transferred the entire title of the facility to the National Burn Recovery Foundation. It is fully funded by the liquidation of your personal assets."

I stood up from the steel table, setting the phone receiver back onto its cradle with a deliberate, final click.

"Claire! Don't leave me!" Ryan screamed behind the glass, his chained hands beating frantically against the Plexiglas, leaving greasy smears on the surface as the two guards stepped out of the shadows to drag him back into the cell block. "Claire! I still love you! You can't do this to me!"

I didn't look back. I walked through the heavy iron security gates, out into the bright, blinding sunshine of the autumn afternoon, where Ethan Hale was waiting for me beside his silver car, his long wool coat open, his hand outstretched to catch mine before I could even reach the pavement.
