Chapter 6 - The Ransom of Truth

"Garrett," I said, my voice calm but my hand gripping the edge of the table. "You’re in the middle of a federal investigation. If you hurt her, you guarantee your own execution."

"I don't care about the investigation anymore," he said, and I could hear the sound of a woman crying in the background. "I’m losing everything. If I’m going down, I’m taking everyone with me. You want your mother back? Bring me the original hard drive. The one with the unencrypted keys."

"You know I can't do that," I said, my pulse hammering in my ears.

"Then I guess we’ll see how much you love your family," he sneered. "You have until sunset. Come to the farmhouse alone, or you can watch her fade from the world."

The line went dead.

"He has her," I told Lily, my voice hollow.

Lily stood up, her jaw set. "You have to go."

"I can't leave you here," I argued.

"The marshals are on their way," she said. "They’ll be here in twenty minutes. You have to go now. If you don't, Mom will die because of what you did."

I hesitated, but she was right. I grabbed the drive—a decoy, one I had prepared just in case—and headed for the door.

The drive to the farmhouse was a blur of speed and terror. I pulled into the driveway at exactly sunset. The house was dark, save for the porch light flickering like a dying pulse.

I stepped out, the cool evening air clinging to my skin. Garrett was standing on the porch, a gun in one hand and a bottle of whiskey in the other. My mother was tied to a chair in the center of the living room, her face swollen from crying.

"You came," Garrett smiled, a jagged, broken expression. "I’m surprised."

"Let her go," I said, stepping onto the porch. "I have the drive."

"Drop it," he commanded.

I dropped the drive at his feet. He lunged for it, his greed overcoming his caution. In that split second, I moved. I didn't reach for the gun; I reached for the light switch.

The room plunged into darkness.

I knew the house better than he did. I knew every creak of the floorboards, every shadow of the furniture. I tackled him, the struggle intense and violent. My training kicked in, the survival instincts I’d honed in the courtroom and the streets taking over.

We crashed into the kitchen, the very site of the initial assault.

"You think you’re so smart!" he roared, swinging at me.

I dodged the blow and slammed him into the dented refrigerator. The metal groaned under the impact. He slumped to the floor, stunned.

I untied my mother, her trembling frame collapsing into my arms. "I’m here, Mom. It’s over."

"Ava..." she whispered, her voice a shadow of itself. "He... he forced me..."

"Save your breath," I said, helping her toward the door just as the sirens began to wail in the distance.

Garrett stirred, but by then, the porch light was flooded by the harsh, unrelenting glare of police spotlights.
