Chapter 6 - The Custody Trial

Courtroom 3B of the County Family Courthouse was cold and smelled of old wax and polished mahogany.

Ethan sat at the defense table dressed in an immaculate charcoal suit, flanked by two top-tier corporate attorneys hired by Linda. Linda herself sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a pearl necklace and a mink coat, looking at me with cold, triumphant superiority.

I sat at the plaintiff's table beside Evelyn. I wore a simple black dress, my hair pulled back in a neat bun, my posture straight and unwavering. My sister was outside in the nursery room, watching Mia.

Judge Evelyn Marcus—a sharp-eyed woman in her late fifties—took her seat on the bench, reviewing the case file through her half-moon spectacles.

"We are here today on the matter of Vance v. Vance," Judge Marcus announced, her gavel tapping lightly. "Plaintiff is requesting temporary spousal maintenance, child support, and a continuation of the emergency occupancy order. Defense has filed a counter-motion alleging financial hardship and requesting immediate shared physical custody of the infant child."

Ethan’s lead attorney, a slick man named Gerald Vance, stood up smoothly.

"Your Honor," Gerald began, adjusting his gold cufflinks. "My client, Mr. Ethan Vance, is a young entrepreneur struggling to launch a modest medical software firm. The plaintiff's demands for three thousand dollars a month in child support are frankly predatory. Mr. Vance’s personal net income for the previous tax year was under sixty-five thousand dollars."

Gerald paused, turning to give me a look of practiced pity.

"Furthermore," Gerald continued, "my client’s mother, Mrs. Linda Vance, is the sole owner of the residence on Elm Street. Keeping Mr. Vance barred from his own family's property while the plaintiff resides there rent-free is causing severe financial strain. We request an immediate termination of the occupancy order and a fifty-fifty physical custody split of the infant, Mia."

Judge Marcus looked over her glasses at Evelyn. "Ms. Reed, your response?"

Evelyn stood up slowly, picking up a thin leather folder.

"Your Honor," Evelyn began calmly, "the defense’s portrayal of Mr. Vance as a 'struggling entrepreneur' would be touching—if it weren't built entirely on perjury and systemic financial fraud."

Gerald Vance immediately jumped up. "Objection! Unsubstantiated slander!"

"I have the financial receipts right here, Your Honor," Evelyn said loudly, stepping forward to hand a thick packet to the bailiff. "While Mr. Vance was standing in a hospital hallway telling my client—who was in active labor—that he couldn't afford to split her delivery bill, he was holding an offshore account in the Cayman Islands containing over eight hundred thousand dollars in concealed revenue."

A sudden hush fell over the courtroom.

Ethan’s head snapped toward Evelyn, his face instantly draining of all color. Beside him, Gerald Vance froze, looking at his client with sudden alarm.

"Furthermore," Evelyn continued, her voice echoing powerfully through the room, "we have uncovered that three months ago, Mr. Vance liquidated a stock portfolio in Apex Medical valued at one point eight million dollars—a portfolio funded entirely by my client’s personal inheritance, which Mr. Vance fraudulently claimed was lost."

Judge Marcus’s eyes widened. She turned her sharp gaze directly onto Ethan. "Is this true, Mr. Vance?"

"Your Honor, these are complex corporate holdings tied to a family trust!" Gerald stammered, his polished demeanor completely dissolving. "My client was not required to—"

"Mr. Vance filed an affidavit of financial disclosure under penalty of perjury two weeks ago claiming total liquid assets of twelve thousand dollars," Judge Marcus interrupted, her voice dropping to a terrifyingly cold whisper. "If these documents are authentic, your client committed felony perjury in my court."

Evelyn wasn't finished. She pulled out a secondary document.

"We also submit into evidence certified audio recordings taken from the hospital triage desk on the night of the child's birth," Evelyn said smoothly. "In these recordings, Mrs. Linda Vance and Mr. Ethan Vance can be heard attempting to coerce a laboring patient into signing away her parental rights under threat of financial abandonment."

"Objection! That was a private conversation!" Linda shrieked from the gallery, standing up in outrage.

"Silence in the gallery!" Judge Marcus barked, slamming her gavel down with thunderous force. "Bailiff, if that woman speaks again, remove her from my courtroom!"

Linda sank back into her chair, her face bright red with humiliation as every eye in the gallery turned to stare at her.

Judge Marcus spent ten agonizing minutes reviewing the bank records, wire transfers, and audio transcripts provided by Evelyn. The silence in the room was so heavy you could hear the soft ticking of the wall clock.

Finally, Judge Marcus set the papers down and looked at Ethan. The look in her eyes was one of utter disgust.

"Mr. Ethan Vance," Judge Marcus said, her voice cutting like a steel blade. "In my twenty years on the bench, I have rarely witnessed such a callous display of bad-faith financial abuse and moral bankruptcy."

Ethan opened his mouth to speak, but no sound came out.

"I am issuing the following temporary orders immediately," Judge Marcus commanded:

"First, the emergency occupancy order for the Elm Street residence remains in full effect. Mr. Vance and his mother are barred from approaching the property."

"Second, all domestic and international bank accounts associated with Mr. Vance and Vance Innovations LLC are placed under immediate judicial receivership. A court-appointed forensic accountant will seize control of all funds."

"Third, Mr. Vance will pay temporary spousal and child support in the amount of twelve thousand dollars per month, retroactive to the date of birth."

"And finally," Judge Marcus concluded, leaning forward, "in light of the attempted coercion at the hospital and the ongoing financial fraud, physical custody of Mia Vance is awarded exclusively to the mother, Claire Vance. Mr. Vance’s visitation rights are suspended pending a full psychological evaluation."
