CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET EMILY FORGOT

Nobody moved.
Victor Hale stood quietly at the doorway of Room 312.
Too quiet.
Too calm.
Too prepared.
Daniel Carter instinctively stepped closer to Emily's bed.
Protecting her.
Protecting the unborn child.
“Who are you?”
Victor smiled politely.
“My name is Victor Hale.”
Daniel's eyes hardened.
“You already said that.”
The man nodded.
“Yes.”
Then he glanced at Emily.
“I'm here because her memory is returning.”
The room instantly became tense.
Dr. Rebecca Hayes stepped forward.
“Sir, this is a restricted area.”
Victor didn't argue.
Instead, he reached into his jacket.
Everyone stiffened.
Security guards moved closer.
But he simply pulled out a photograph.
An old one.
Worn.
Folded.
Faded by time.
Then he handed it to Daniel.
Daniel looked down.
His blood instantly ran cold.
The photo showed Emily.
But not the Emily he knew.
She looked younger.
Terrified.
Standing beside a river.
Willow Creek.
And next to her…
Victor.
Then Daniel noticed something else.
Emily was pregnant.
Not with their current baby.
Years earlier.
And behind them stood several people carrying clipboards.
Doctors.
Scientists.
The back of the photograph contained one handwritten sentence:
PROJECT AURORA.
The room froze.
Dr. Hayes frowned.
“What is that?”
Victor exhaled slowly.
“An experiment.”
Daniel instantly exploded.
“What experiment?”
Victor looked guilty.
“Twenty years ago…”
He swallowed.
“…a private medical company funded illegal neurological research.”
The room went silent.
“Research on what?”
Victor hesitated.
Then answered.
“Maternal memory.”
Dr. Hayes stared.
“What?”
Victor nodded.
“They believed mothers could pass emotional memories directly to unborn children.”
Nobody spoke.
Then Victor added something even stranger.
“Emily was one of the children born from that study.”
Daniel felt dizzy.
“No.”
Victor nodded.
“Yes.”
“She wasn't supposed to remember.”
Dr. Hayes crossed her arms.
“This is absurd.”
Victor looked at her.
“Do you know why she went into a coma?”
The room became silent.
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
Not really.
The official diagnosis was unexplained neurological collapse.
Sudden.
Rare.
Unpredictable.
Victor inhaled.
“Her brain wasn't shutting down.”
Everyone stared.
“It was protecting itself.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
Victor nodded.
“Something triggered a buried memory.”
Then he looked at Emily.
“And her pregnancy awakened it.”
The room grew colder.
Then Lily quietly spoke.
“Because babies remember too.”
Everyone looked at her.
The seven-year-old girl stood beside the window.
Holding the empty jar.
Calm.
As if she understood far more than she should.
Dr. Hayes knelt beside her.
“What do you mean?”
Lily shrugged.
“My grandma says babies hear stories before they're born.”
The room remained silent.
Then unexpectedly…
Dr. Hayes smiled.
Because scientifically…
That wasn't entirely wrong.
Fetuses do respond to voices.
To emotions.
To stress.
To rhythms.
But then Lily added something else.
“Miss Emily's baby was helping her remember.”
The room froze.
Because somehow…
It felt true.
Then suddenly…
The heart monitor beeped differently.
Emily's eyes began moving beneath her eyelids.
Rapidly.
Dr. Hayes immediately checked her.
“Emily?”
No response.
Then Emily suddenly whispered…
“Blue room.”
Everyone froze.
“What?”
“Blue room…”
She repeated.
Then again.
“Don't let them take the files.”
Victor instantly lost color.
Daniel noticed immediately.
“You know what that means.”
Victor looked terrified.
“Yes.”
Daniel grabbed him.
“What is the blue room?”
Victor swallowed hard.
“The evidence.”
Daniel stared.
“Evidence of what?”
Victor answered quietly.
“Everything.”
The experiments.
The illegal funding.
The stolen identities.
The altered medical records.
The children involved.
Then Daniel whispered…
“Emily knows where it is.”
Victor nodded.
“Yes.”
Then suddenly every light inside Room 312 flickered.
The room fell dark for one second.
Two seconds.
Then emergency power activated.
Everyone looked around nervously.
Then Dr. Hayes gasped.
“What is that?”
There was a note sitting on Emily's bed.
Nobody had seen it appear.
Nobody had entered.
Daniel picked it up.
His hands began shaking.
One sentence.
SHE REMEMBERED TOO EARLY.
Everyone froze.
Then another monitor alarm erupted.
Not Emily's.
The baby's.
Dr. Hayes rushed over instantly.
Then her face changed.
“What?”
Daniel panicked.
“What's wrong?”
Dr. Hayes looked shocked.
“The baby…”
She stared at the screen.
“…is responding to external sounds.”
The room fell silent.
Then Emily's lips moved again.
This time much stronger.
And for the first time in eight months…
Her eyes slowly opened.
Everyone froze.
Tears instantly filled Daniel's eyes.
“Emily…”
She looked directly at him.
Actually looked at him.
Then tears rolled down her cheeks too.
“Daniel.”
His world shattered into relief.
He held her hand.
“Oh my God…”
Emily smiled weakly.
Then her face changed instantly.
Fear.
Pure fear.
She grabbed his arm tightly.
“Soil.”
Everyone froze.
“What?”
Emily looked at Lily.
“Keep the soil safe.”
Then she whispered the words that changed everything.
“The blue room is underneath Willow Creek.”
The entire room went silent.
Then Victor's face drained of color completely.
Because he knew exactly what she meant.
And someone else did too.
At that exact moment…
Every phone in the room buzzed simultaneously.
One message.
Unknown sender.
DO NOT GO TO THE CREEK.
