CHAPTER 1: THE SECRET HIDDEN Behind Lily's Smile

Everything changed inside the nurse's office.

Lily Rosewood lay unconscious on the examination bed while Nurse Amanda gently checked her vital signs.

Mrs. Margaret Coggins stood nearby, unable to shake the horrible feeling growing inside her chest.

Something was very wrong.

Too wrong.

Lily's heartbeat was elevated.

Her body temperature was slightly low.

Her tiny hands were covered with old scratches.

But that wasn't the part that frightened Amanda.

It was when she carefully examined Lily's lower back.

She froze.

Then she looked at Margaret.

Margaret instantly noticed.

“What is it?”

Amanda hesitated.

Then quietly said…

“She has severe bruising.”

Margaret's heart dropped.

“Bruising?”

Amanda nodded.

“Old bruises.”

Then she swallowed.

“And new ones.”

Margaret felt cold.

Completely cold.

“Call an ambulance.”

Amanda immediately picked up the phone.

Within minutes, paramedics arrived.

Lily slowly regained consciousness during the ride to St. Andrew Children's Hospital.

Margaret sat beside her.

Holding her hand.

“Am I in trouble?”

The tiny voice nearly shattered her heart.

“No, sweetheart.”

Lily stared at the ceiling.

“Grandma says teachers call police when kids are bad.”

Margaret instantly felt tears forming.

“No.”

She squeezed her hand.

“Teachers call for help when children need protection.”

Lily remained quiet.

Then she whispered…

“Okay.”

A few moments later, she quietly added…

“Can I tell you something?”

Margaret smiled gently.

“Anything.”

Lily leaned closer.

Then whispered…

“I don't think Grandma likes me.”

Margaret froze.

Nobody answered immediately.

Because some sentences are too painful to hear from a five-year-old.

Then Lily asked…

“Is that why my tummy hurts?”

Margaret couldn't speak.

She simply kissed the little girl's forehead.

“None of this is your fault.”

Lily nodded slowly.

As if she didn't fully believe her yet.

At the hospital, pediatric specialist Dr. Emily Sutton began examining Lily.

Tests.

Bloodwork.

Scans.

Questions.

Observations.

The room remained quiet for nearly an hour.

Then Dr. Sutton entered the consultation room.

Margaret stood immediately.

“How is she?”

The doctor looked serious.

“She's malnourished.”

Margaret covered her mouth.

The doctor continued.

“She has untreated intestinal inflammation.”

Then another pause.

“She also shows signs of prolonged physical neglect.”

Margaret felt her knees weaken.

“Dear God…”

Dr. Sutton nodded sadly.

“There's more.”

She placed a small object on the table.

A metal hairpin.

Margaret frowned.

“What is that?”

Dr. Sutton sighed.

“We found it sewn into the lining of her clothing.”

Margaret blinked.

“What?”

The doctor nodded.

“It wasn't accidental.”

Everyone fell silent.

Then Dr. Sutton unfolded a tiny piece of paper hidden inside the fabric.

The message was written in shaky handwriting.

Please help Lily.

She is not safe at home.

The room stopped breathing.

Margaret stared at the note.

“Who wrote this?”

Nobody knew.

Then Dr. Sutton pointed at something else.

The handwriting wasn't adult handwriting.

It belonged to a child.

Margaret's heart shattered.

Lily had been asking for help.

For weeks.

Maybe months.

Hidden inside her own clothes.

Waiting for someone to finally see her.

Then suddenly a social worker entered.

“There's a problem.”

Everyone turned.

“What?”

The woman looked uneasy.

“Lily's grandmother is here.”

Margaret froze.

“What?”

The woman nodded.

“And she's demanding to take Lily home.”

The room instantly became tense.

“Who is she?”

The social worker inhaled deeply.

“Eleanor Rosewood.”

Then she lowered her voice.

“She used to be one of the most respected women in Oakwood.”

Margaret frowned.

“Used to be?”

The social worker nodded.

“Years ago.”

Then she hesitated.

“As strange as this sounds…”

She pulled out an old newspaper clipping.

Margaret stared.

Then her face drained of color.

Because the article featured Eleanor standing beside another child.

A little girl.

Smiling.

Healthy.

Happy.

The headline read:

LOCAL MOTHER DISAPPEARS UNDER MYSTERIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES.

The missing woman's name was…

Claire Rosewood.

Lily's mother.

And according to official records…

She had vanished three years ago without a trace.

Margaret slowly looked back toward Lily's room.

Then her blood ran cold.

Because Lily had once whispered something nobody understood.

“Mommy isn't gone.”

“She just can't come home yet.”

At the time…

Everyone thought she was imagining things.

But now…

May you like

Nothing seemed impossible anymore.
