Chapter 3: The Voices in the Dark

Chapter 3: The Voices in the Dark

The audio technician at the clerk's desk plugged the tiny digital recorder into the courtroom’s central computer interface. A heavy, static-filled hum filled the speakers mounted in the four corners of the room.

Daniel sat frozen, his jaw locked so tightly that a muscle in his cheek was violently twitching. Vanessa had stopped whispering. She sat perfectly rigid, her eyes wide and glassy with the terror of a predator that had suddenly found itself caught in a steel trap.

The static cleared, and a voice boomed through the speakers. It was loud, crisp, and unmistakably Daniel’s.

"Did you drop the crushed tablets into the bottle before you brought it over?" Daniel’s recorded voice asked. The audio quality was slightly muffled, indicating the recorder had been hidden in a drawer or a pocket nearby.

"Of course I did, darling," Vanessa’s voice replied through the speakers, her tone completely devoid of the sophisticated, professional marketing director persona she presented to the world. It was cold, sharp, and dripping with an unsettling malice. "The pharmacist in Chicago was very clear. At thirty milligrams a day, the Clonidine will keep her blood pressure low enough to cause syncopal episodes. The doctors will assume it's preeclampsia. By the time she reaches her third trimester, the placental abruption will happen naturally. She’ll lose the baby, and the shock will make it easy to commit her to the psychiatric wing at St. Jude’s."

"And the asset waiver?" Daniel’s voice asked on the recording.

"Already drafted," Vanessa purred. "Once she’s sedated in the hospital and grieving the loss of the fetus, she’ll sign anything to make the nightmare go away. She’ll give you the business shares, the house, the properties. We’ll have everything, Daniel. And that annoying little brat Lily will be sent straight to that boarding school in Switzerland I told you about. We won't have to deal with either of them."

The recording clicked, followed by the sound of a door slamming and the distant, muffled sound of a small child crying in the background—Lily, who had been hiding in the hallway closet with her stuffed rabbit, listening to her father and the "cruel lady" plot the murder of her unborn sibling and the destruction of her mother.

The courtroom erupted.

Several women in the gallery burst into tears. Emma’s attorney slammed his hands on the table, shouting for the bailiff, while Emma herself dropped into her chair, her body shaking with violent, uncontrollable sobs. She pulled her knees to her chest, her hands wrapped defensively around her pregnant belly, realizing that the man she had loved for seven years had been systematically poisoning her and her unborn child for months.

"Turn it off!" Daniel roared, slamming his fists onto the defense table, sending his legal files flying across the floor. "Turn that garbage off! It’s an illegal recording! It’s inadmissible! You can't use a child's toy to frame me!"

"Sit down! Sit down, Mr. Caldwell!" Judge Whitaker thundered, her voice booming louder than the speakers. She raised her gavel and brought it down three times with deafening force. "Bailiff! Summon the state troopers to this courtroom immediately! Lock down the exit doors!"

Vanessa didn't wait for the troopers to arrive. With the sudden, desperate panic of a cornered animal, she grabbed her designer purse, pushed her own lawyer out of the way, and bolted toward the heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom.

"Stop her!" the bailiff shouted, drawing his taser from his belt.

Before Vanessa could touch the brass handles of the exit doors, two large, uniform Ohio State Highway Patrol officers threw the doors open from the outside. They took one look at Vanessa’s frantic face, grabbed her by her upper arms, and spun her around, slamming her face-first against the polished wooden paneling of the courtroom wall.

"Let go of me! Let go of me!" Vanessa shrieked, her expensive hairstyle falling apart, her makeup smearing against the wood as the silver handcuffs clicked loudly around her wrists. "Daniel did it! It was his idea! He wanted the business shares! He hated her! I was just helping him! Don't ruin my life for this!"

"Daniel Caldwell and Vanessa Price," Judge Whitaker declared from the bench, her voice ringing with an icy, terrifying authority. "You are both being placed under immediate arrest for conspiracy to commit aggravated murder, domestic poisoning, and child endangerment. Your bail is denied. You will be taken straight to the Franklin County Correctional Facility to await formal indictment by the grand jury."

Daniel fell back into his chair, his eyes wide and hollow, all his arrogance stripped away as the state troopers moved toward him. The costly navy suit now looked like a shroud. He looked across the aisle at Emma, his lips moving as if to beg for mercy, but Emma didn't look back. She kept her eyes locked on Lily, who was climbing down from the judge's bench, her yellow cardigan bright against the gray background of the court.

Lily ran past the lawyers, past the broken defense tables, and threw her small arms around Emma’s neck. Emma pulled her daughter into her lap, burying her face in the little girl's hair, holding both of her children tight as the monsters were finally dragged away into the dark.
