Chapter 4: The Presentation of Evidence

Chapter 4: The Presentation of Evidence
The Grand Ballroom of the Four Seasons was a sea of glittering crystal chandeliers, expensive champagne, and the low, elegant murmur of two hundred millionaires. Clare walked into the room on Ethan’s arm, her head held high, soaking in the envious glances of her high-society rivals. Her mother, Evelyn, was already seated at the primary Wallace table, dripping in diamonds she had bought using Ethan’s forged corporate cards.
But the seating arrangement was not what Clare expected.

Ruth sat directly to Ethan’s right, occupying the seat of honor normally reserved for the future bride. Clare was relegated to his left, placed next to her mother. The tension at the table was thick enough to cut with a knife, but Ethan remained perfectly poised, charming the city’s mayor and discussing international investments as if it were a perfectly normal evening.
"Ethan, darling," Evelyn whispered across the table, her voice honeyed with fake maternal affection. "Don't you think it’s a bit... unusual to have the domestic staff sitting at the head table? The governor’s wife looked quite confused when she came over to greet us."
"Ruth isn't domestic staff, Evelyn," Ethan said, raised his champagne glass slightly toward his mother, whose face was pale as she stared down at her untouched plate. "She is the sole foundation of my life. And tonight, everyone in this room is going to understand exactly what that means."
At 9:00 PM, the house lights dimmed, and the heavy velvet curtains of the main stage parted. The master of ceremonies stepped to the microphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the annual Wallace Global Gala," the speaker announced. "Before we begin our charity auction, our Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Ethan Wallace, would like to present a special commemorative digital presentation detailing the core values of our family foundation."
The crowd applauded politely as Ethan stood up, adjusting his cuffs, and walked up the steps onto the stage. He took his place behind the crystal podium, his face illuminated by the bright white light of the massive, sixty-foot high-definition projector screen behind him.
"Good evening, everyone," Ethan began, his voice echoing with an absolute, commanding clarity that instantly silenced the room. "When I founded Wallace Global, I did so on a simple principle: accountability. In business, if an asset is toxic, it must be purged. If a partner is fraudulent, they must be destroyed. Tonight, I wanted to share a private glimpse into the home life that enables this success."
Clare smiled brilliantly from her seat, leaning over to whisper to her mother. "He’s going to announce our wedding date early. I knew he couldn't resist."
"Let us look at the screen," Ethan said softly.
The projector flared to life. But it didn't show footage of Ethan’s tech innovations or corporate charity drives in Africa.
Instead, the massive screen split into four high-definition digital blocks. The audio system of the entire ballroom rumbled as a voice filled the space—crisp, clear, and dripping with venom.
"Look at this place. There is dust on the chandelier... You are a maid, Ruth. You will always be a maid. If you say a single word to him about your wrist, I will tell him you tried to steal my engagement ring!"
On the screen, a massive, crystal-clear video played in a continuous loop: Clare, dressed in her luxury clothes, deliberately and viciously slamming her stiletto heel down onto Ruth’s bandaged wrist while the elderly woman wept on the kitchen floor.
The ballroom dropped into an absolute, horrifying silence. A collective gasp rippled through the audience. The mayor froze with his glass halfway to his mouth. The governor’s wife covered her lips in absolute horror.
Clare’s smile disintegrated. Her face turned a violent, ghostly shade of white as she stared up at the sixty-foot projection of her own cruelty playing out in front of every single billionaire, investor, and journalist in the city of Seattle.
"Turn it off!" Evelyn shrieked, standing up from the table, her diamonds rattling. "Ethan! What is the meaning of this? This is a fabrication! A deepfake! Security, turn off the projector!"
"The footage is verified by the state digital forensics department, Evelyn," Ethan’s voice cut through her screams from the podium, colder than a winter storm on the Atlantic. He didn't raise his voice, but the sheer, absolute authority behind it made the security guards at the doors stand perfectly still.
Ethan tapped his tablet, and the screen shifted. The video vanished, replaced by a massive, line-by-line financial ledger detailing the four million dollars Clare and Evelyn had embezzled through forged signatures.
"Claremont Elite Pageants," Ethan read aloud from the podium, his eyes locking onto Clare’s trembling, sweating form. "A shell corporation used to fund your family’s failing social standing, supported entirely by the systematic abuse and robbery of the woman who raised me. You wanted to know who I would believe, Clare? You told my mother that I would always choose you."

Ethan stepped out from behind the podium, walking slowly down the stage steps until he stood in the center aisle of the ballroom, looking down at his former fiancée.
"You are not a matriarch, Clare," Ethan said, his voice carrying to every corner of the silent hall. "You are a thief, a coward, and an abuser. And your time in my world has officially expired."
