CHAPTER 5: THE SINS OF THE FATHER

CHAPTER 5: THE SINS OF THE FATHER
The tension in the Russo headquarters was palpable over the next two weeks. The corporate office was effectively locked down, with armed guards posted at every entrance and Luca permanently assigned to shadow Lily and me whenever we left our apartment. Dante worked eighteen-hour days, his face growing gaunt, his eyes turning darker, his mind entirely consumed by the chess match against the Marcone family.
But the true explosion didn't come from a mafia hitman. It came from a file left on my desk.
It was a rainy Tuesday evening. Dante was in a private war-room meeting with his captains, and I was tasked with sorting through his old personal archives—files from ten years ago that needed to be digitized for the shipping company's record retention compliance.
I pulled out a faded, yellowed folder labeled Asset Acquisition - 2016. Inside were old bank statements, property titles, and corporate balance sheets from the early days of Dante's leadership. As I flipped through the pages, a familiar name caught my eye, causing my heart to violently stop.

Donovan Financial Consulting.
James Donovan. Lily's father.
My fingers trembled as I pulled out the documents beneath the header. It was a comprehensive financial ledger detailing a money-laundering scheme orchestrated by Donovan Financial on behalf of the Russo family seven years ago. James hadn't just been a clean, successful corporate accountant; he had been a dirty financial fixer for Dante Russo.
But it was the last document in the folder that completely shattered my soul.
It was a private investigator's report dated exactly eight months ago—the week before James vanished from my life. It contained photos of James standing outside a federal building in Chicago, talking to two men in dark suits with FBI badges clipped to their belts. James was turning state’s evidence. He was preparing to hand over seven years of Russo family financial records to the federal prosecutors in exchange for total immunity and witness protection.
Attached to the report was a handwritten note in Dante's thick, bold script: The leak must be plugged. Permanently. Eliminate the asset before the grand jury convenes.
The report concluded with a final photograph. It was a picture of a silver sedan crushed beneath the wheels of a massive semi-truck on Interstate 90. A fiery wreck that left no survivors. The date of the accident was the exact day James had supposedly "vanished" with my life savings.
James hadn't run away from me. He hadn't abandoned his pregnant girlfriend because he was a coward.
He was murdered. Killed by the very man who was currently paying for my daughter's crib, the man whose hands I had cleaned, the man I was stupidly, desperately falling in love with.
A low, horrified gasp escaped my lips, the files slipping from my hands and scattering across the hardwood floor like fallen leaves.
"Sophia?"
I snapped my head up. Dante was standing in the doorway of the executive suite, his jacket off, his tie loosened, looking exhausted. He looked down at the scattered papers on the floor, his eyes instantly identifying the yellowed folder, the photos of the car crash, the handwritten note.
The air in the room became thick, suffocating, and cold.
"You knew him," I whispered, my voice cracking, tears of absolute, agonizing betrayal pouring down my cheeks. "You didn't find me by accident at the Velvet Room. You didn't research my debts because you 'recruit survivors.' You knew exactly who I was because you killed the father of my baby!"
Dante didn't deny it. He didn't flinch. He just stood there, his amber eyes filling with a profound, crushing weight of guilt that explained every look, every sorrow, and every boundary he had kept between us.
"Yes," Dante said, his voice a low, ragged ghost of itself. "I ordered the hit on James Donovan."
I stood up, backing away from him until my spine hit the glass windows overlooking the rainy city. "You monster. You absolute monster! He was the father of my child! He loved me! We were going to have a life!"
"He was a rat, Sophia!" Dante shouted, his composure finally breaking, his fists clenching at his sides as he stepped into the room. "He didn't love you! Do you want to know what was in his immunity agreement? He wasn't just giving up my records; he was negotiating for a single-person entry into the Witness Protection Program. He was going to leave you behind in Chicago with a newborn baby, completely exposed to the fallout of a federal investigation. He had already emptied your joint account to pay for a private escape plan in Costa Rica that he didn't intend to share with you!"
I stopped, my breath catching in my throat, my mind frantically trying to process the double layer of betrayal. "No... no, you're lying to protect yourself."
"I have never lied to you, Sophia," Dante said, his voice dropping back into a desperate, pleading whisper as he stopped five feet away from me, refusing to crowd me. "I found out about you the day after he died. My men searched his apartment and found your ultrasound picture, along with the financial records showing he had stolen every penny you had. I watched you for months from the shadows. I watched you give up your education, sell your belongings, and destroy your body at that club just to keep his child alive."
He took a deep, shuddering breath, a tear finally escaping his amber eyes. "I didn't bring you here to build a cage, Sophia. I brought you here because my soul was rotting from the guilt of what I did. I wanted to give you back the life he stole from you. I wanted to protect the innocent child who lost a father because of my war. I never intended for you to find out. I never intended to fall in love with you."
"Don't say that!" I shrieked, covering my ears. "Don't you dare say you love me! You have his blood on your hands! Every piece of furniture in my apartment, every drop of formula Lily drinks... it's blood money!"
"Then take it and run," a harsh, mocking voice interrupted from behind us.
The double glass doors of the suite shattered into a million pieces as a flash-bang grenade detonated in the hallway. I was thrown to the floor by the concussive force, my vision blurring, my ears ringing with a deafening, violent roar.

Through the smoke, four men in tactical gear with the Marcone crest emblazoned on their vests rushed into the room, their automatic rifles raised. Leading them was Silvio Marcone—the sadistic underboss of the rival syndicate.
"Dante Russo," Silvio sneered, stepping over the glass shards, a cruel smile stretching across his scarred face. "We followed your little assistant's trail right to your vault. And look what we found. The king on his knees, weeping over a dead rat's woman."
