Chapter 5: The Demolition of Claire Vance

Chapter 5: The Demolition of Claire Vance

By Thursday afternoon, the fallout had moved from the corporate towers to the county administrative offices. Claire Vance was sitting in her neat, pastel-colored office at the Department of Family and Children Services, reviewing a case file on her computer screen, when her supervisor and two investigators from the state’s internal affairs division walked in without knocking.

Claire looked up, her perfectly manicured hand pausing over her keyboard. "Brenda? What’s going on?"

Brenda, a veteran social worker with thirty years of flawless service, dropped a thick, printed log of system access keys onto Claire’s desk.

"Pack your bags, Claire," Brenda said, her voice shaking with a deep, professional anger. "Internal Affairs just completed a forensic trace on the anonymous child neglect reports submitted against Emma Miller over the last three weeks. The digital routing protocols show every single report was submitted from your personal user terminal, using your encrypted state credentials, while you were off-duty."

Claire’s face transformed into a mask of sharp, defensive panic. "Brenda, listen to me! I had legitimate concerns as a mandatory reporter! My sister has been emotionally unstable—"

"Your sister is a prominent commercial architect with a spotless record," the lead investigator said, stepping forward and flashing his state gold shield. "And you are currently under investigation for official misconduct, falsifying state records, and malicious prosecution. Your ex-husband, Marcus Vance, has also filed a formal petition with the state licensing board detailing your history of administrative manipulation. Your social work license has been suspended indefinitely, effective at noon today."

Claire stood up, her chair screeching against the floorboards. "You can't do this! This is a personal family matter!"

"It became a state crime when you used a government database to assist your lover in an illegal child custody maneuver," the investigator replied coldly. "You have ten minutes to clear out your desk before security escorts you from the premises. A formal summons from the State’s Attorney will be delivered to your residence tomorrow morning."

As Claire stumbled out of the building ten minutes later, clutching a single cardboard box of her personal items, her phone began to ring. It was Ethan.

She answered it, her voice shrill with hysteria. "Ethan! Everything is ruined! They found the logs—the state suspended my license! Where are you? We need to use the Novalis fund to hire a criminal defense lawyer right now!"

"There is no Novalis fund, Claire," Ethan’s voice came through the line, completely hollow, broken, and dripping with an exhausted, terrified despair. He was sitting on a concrete bench outside a suburban train station, his designer suit wrinkled, his hands dirty from carrying his own belongings in a trash bag. "The court froze everything. My partnership is gone. I don't have a car. I don't have a home. Emma took it all."

"What do you mean she took it all?" Claire screamed, stopping on the crowded sidewalk as pedestrians turned to stare at her. "She’s just an architect! She’s supposed to be crying in a motel room!"

"She wasn't alone, Claire," Ethan whispered, a cold realization finally washing over his mind. "She had Marcus. And she had the truth. We tried to bury her, but we just dug our own graves."

Claire dropped her phone onto the pavement, the glass screen shattering into a spiderweb of fine lines, mirroring the total destruction of the perfect, malicious life she had tried to construct at my expense.
