CHAPTER 4: The Enemy Inside

CHAPTER 4: The Enemy Inside

The emergency alarm shattered the silence.

Red lights flashed across the executive floor as the building was plunged into darkness.

For a split second, no one moved.

Then Arthur's voice cut through the confusion.

"Everyone stay where you are."

Michael's expression hardened instantly.

"They're here."

He grabbed the encrypted flash drive from my desk and slipped it into the inside pocket of his jacket.

I frowned.

"No."

He shook his head.

"If they came for it once..."

"They'll come again."

The emergency generators activated a few seconds later.

Only half the lights returned.

The executive floor remained dim, illuminated by strips of emergency lighting along the hallways.

Arthur pressed the intercom.

"Security."

Only static answered.

He tried again.

Nothing.

Michael looked toward the ceiling.

"They disabled internal communications."

"Professional."

Very professional.

Whoever was behind this knew exactly how Ward Global's emergency systems operated.

That knowledge could only come from someone on the inside.

Suddenly—

A loud crash echoed from the reception area.

Glass shattered.

Someone screamed.

Arthur moved toward the door.

Michael stopped him.

"No."

"They're trying to draw us out."

I stepped beside Michael.

"How many?"

He listened carefully.

"At least four."

"Maybe five."

"They're wearing soft-soled shoes."

Arthur blinked.

"You can tell that?"

Michael smiled faintly.

"I spent thirty years protecting your grandfather."

"I learned to listen before I looked."

Another crash.

Closer this time.

The office door handle slowly turned.

Someone was outside.

The handle stopped.

Turned again.

More aggressively.

Then—

Silence.

Michael whispered,

"They know we're here."

Arthur quietly opened a locked cabinet behind the bookshelf.

Inside wasn't a weapon.

It was an emergency satellite phone.

He handed it to me.

"Call Agent Grant."

I dialed immediately.

The line connected.

"FBI."

"This is Cassidy Ward."

"They're inside headquarters."

Agent Melissa Grant didn't hesitate.

"Stay where you are."

"We're six minutes away."

Six minutes.

It suddenly felt like a very long time.

The lights flickered again.

Then completely failed.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Only the city skyline beyond the windows cast faint silver light across the office.

A heavy object slammed against the door.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The reinforced lock held.

For now.

Michael quietly removed the flash drive from his pocket.

He looked at me.

"If anything happens..."

I interrupted him.

"No."

"We're all leaving together."

He smiled.

"You're just like your grandfather."

Another violent impact.

The door frame cracked.

Arthur quietly whispered,

"The hinges won't last."

Michael looked toward the private emergency exit hidden behind the bookcase.

"There."

Arthur nodded.

"It leads to the underground archive."

I frowned.

"The Legacy Vault?"

Arthur smiled.

"Exactly."

My grandfather had prepared for situations like this long before I was old enough to understand why.

Michael entered a security code.

The hidden passage opened.

Just as we stepped inside—

The office door exploded inward.

Masked figures rushed into the room.

One shouted,

"They're escaping!"

Footsteps thundered behind us.

Michael slammed the hidden passage shut.

Metal bolts automatically locked into place.

Someone on the other side began striking the steel door.

But this entrance had been designed by my grandfather.

Nothing short of explosives would open it.

The tunnel descended beneath the headquarters.

Cold concrete walls.

Emergency lighting.

Steel doors every hundred feet.

As we hurried forward, Michael finally handed me the flash drive.

"Keep it."

"What exactly is on this?"

He looked straight ahead.

"Everything."

"The original accounting records."

"Recorded conversations."

"Private emails."

"The names of every executive who accepted bribes."

Arthur frowned.

"Then why didn't your grandfather expose them years ago?"

Michael sighed.

"Because he didn't have enough evidence."

"He believed the network reached beyond the company."

"He wanted proof."

"And before he finished..."

"He became ill."

We reached the Legacy Vault.

Samuel, the elderly systems engineer, opened the heavy steel door.

His eyes widened.

"What happened upstairs?"

"No time."

Arthur locked the vault behind us.

Michael finally connected the flash drive to an isolated computer.

The screen came alive.

Thousands of encrypted files appeared.

Samuel whistled softly.

"My God..."

"This archive is enormous."

Michael typed a long password.

The first folder opened.

PROJECT PHOENIX

Arthur frowned.

"I've never heard of it."

Michael answered quietly.

"Neither had anyone else."

Until now.

The first documents explained everything.

Project Phoenix wasn't an investment.

It was a conspiracy.

Over ten years earlier, several senior executives had secretly agreed to weaken Ward Global from within.

Artificial losses.

Leaked contracts.

Failed negotiations.

Market manipulation.

Their goal...

Lower the company's value.

Then purchase controlling shares through offshore corporations.

They intended to steal the empire legally.

My grandfather discovered the plan before it was completed.

He secretly prevented every major attempt.

But he never identified the leader.

Only the people carrying out orders.

Samuel opened another file.

Video recordings.

Board meetings.

Private conversations.

Financial approvals.

Then...

One familiar face appeared repeatedly.

Leonard Price.

Arthur sighed.

"So he really was involved."

Michael nodded.

"Yes."

"But he wasn't giving orders."

"He was receiving them."

The same pattern appeared in every recording.

Someone else remained hidden.

Someone who never appeared on camera.

Then Samuel stopped.

"Wait."

He enlarged one video.

Only a reflection in a glass conference table.

A man's hand.

Nothing else.

Except...

A ring.

Gold.

Oval-shaped.

Decorated with a black onyx stone.

Michael froze.

"I know that ring."

Arthur looked at him.

"Whose is it?"

Michael answered slowly.

"I've only seen one man wear it."

He looked directly at me.

"And he attended your wedding."

My heartbeat quickened.

"Who?"

Before Michael could answer—

The vault door alarm suddenly activated.

Samuel looked at the security monitor.

"They found us."

Several masked figures had reached the underground level.

Using thermal scanners.

Searching each tunnel.

One of them carried military-grade explosives.

Arthur's face hardened.

"They're going to breach the vault."

Michael turned toward me.

"There's another exit."

"No."

I shook my head.

"We're not running anymore."

I looked around the room.

"My grandfather spent his life protecting this company."

"My parents built part of it."

"I've hidden who I am for years."

I straightened my shoulders.

"That ends tonight."

Arthur slowly smiled.

"So..."

"What are your orders, Chairwoman?"

For the first time since reclaiming my family's legacy...

I answered without hesitation.

"Open every internal security system."

"Lock down the entire building."

"Broadcast every security camera."

"And send every file on this drive..."

"...to the FBI."

Samuel grinned.

"With pleasure."

His fingers flew across the keyboard.

Across the building, blast doors slammed shut.

Elevators froze.

Emergency shutters sealed every exit.

Every security monitor switched on simultaneously.

The masked intruders suddenly realized...

They were no longer hunting us.

They had become trapped inside the building.

Five minutes later, Agent Melissa Grant and a federal tactical team entered headquarters through the underground garage.

The operation lasted less than twelve minutes.

One by one, the intruders surrendered.

Only their leader escaped.

When agents removed the masks from the captured men, Michael quietly closed his eyes.

"I know them."

Arthur frowned.

"Who are they?"

"They're former private contractors."

"They've worked for one man for years."

My voice was barely above a whisper.

"The man with the black onyx ring?"

Michael nodded.

"Yes."

Agent Grant approached carrying evidence collected from one of the intruders.

A burner phone.

A coded notebook.

And a photograph.

She handed it to me.

It wasn't recent.

It had been taken at Brendan's engagement party with Jessica.

In the background, almost unnoticed, stood an older man shaking hands with Diane Morrison.

Elegant.

Gray-haired.

Wearing a tailored black suit.

And on his right hand...

A gold ring set with a black onyx stone.

Michael stared at the photograph.

His face turned pale.

"I was wrong."

Arthur frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Michael slowly pointed to the man.

"I thought he was just another investor."

He swallowed hard.

"I never realized..."

"...he was the one my grandfather had been hunting all along."

I turned the photograph over.

Written neatly across the back, in elegant handwriting, were four chilling words:

The Chairman Never Retired.

May you like

The true mastermind had never disappeared.

He had simply been waiting.
