Chapter 2: The Sanitarium’s Ledger

Chapter 2: The Sanitarium’s Ledger

The private wing of Saint Jude’s Hospital smelled of pine and expensive disinfectant. By midnight, my side had been stitched with twelve neat micro-sutures, and a continuous IV of saline and antibiotics was running into the back of my left hand.

I sat propped up against the pillows of the automated bed, staring out the window at the Manhattan skyline. The city looked vast, cold, and entirely indifferent to the collapse of the marriage I had spent five years trying to protect.

The door clicked open, and Lawrence stepped inside, accompanied by a woman in her late thirties wearing a dark navy pantsuit and a silver badge pinned to her lapel. Her hair was pulled back into a severe, professional bun, and her expression was that of someone who spent her life looking at the ugly underbelly of beautiful lives.

“Clara,” Lawrence said, walking to the side of the bed. “This is Detective Special Agent Evelyn Reed from the Financial Crimes Unit. She has been working alongside our legal team for the past four months.”

I blinked, looking from Lawrence to Detective Reed. “Four months? Lawrence... you knew about them before tonight?”

Detective Reed stepped forward, pulling a digital tablet from her briefcase. “We didn't know about the physical danger you were in, Mrs. Vance—or rather, Miss Sterling. For that, I am truly sorry. But we have been tracking a systemic pattern of corporate espionage and asset stripping targeting Sterling Holdings since the beginning of the fiscal year.”

She tapped the screen, displaying a complex flowchart of financial transactions that linked Ethan’s corporate account to an offshore entity registered in the Cayman Islands.

“Your husband wasn't just having an affair with Vanessa Ward,” Detective Reed explained, her tone clipped and precise. “They were actively setting up a liquidation framework. Ethan was using his position as CEO to artificially lower the valuation of Sterling Holdings’ core subsidiaries. He was manufacturing a crisis—making it look like the company was failing so that the board would agree to a buyout from Ward-Whitman Development at pennies on the dollar.”

“And the hotel contract?” I asked, my voice hollow. “The one they were celebrating tonight?”

“The crown jewel,” Lawrence took over, his face grim. “The new luxury resort development in the Catskills. It’s a five-hundred-million-dollar project. If the buyout had gone through before Monday, the title to that land would have transitioned to Vanessa’s firm, and the Sterling Trust would have been left with nothing but empty shell companies and debt. They needed your signature on the divorce papers tonight because Ethan’s corporate authority terminates automatically upon the filing of legal separation. He knew his time was up.”

I leaned back against the pillows, a cold dread washing over me. “He didn't just want a divorce. He wanted to wipe me out. If I had signed those papers tonight...”

“You would have signed away your right to contest the asset transfers,” Detective Reed said. “And given the nature of the knife wound... we have reason to believe that if you had signed, you might not have survived the night. A convenient home invasion or a tragic accident would have left Ethan as the sole executor of your estate before the legal dissolution could be processed by the state.”

The door to the room flew open, interrupting the conversation. Marcus Vance, Lawrence’s nephew and our family’s security chief, stepped inside, his brow furrowed with urgency.

“Uncle, we have a problem,” Marcus said, looking at Detective Reed. “Ethan’s legal team just posted his bail. He used a pre-arranged line of credit through one of Vanessa’s boutique investment firms. He’s out.”

Detective Reed didn't look surprised. She simply adjusted her blazer. “We only charged him with domestic assault and reckless endangerment at the scene. The financial warrants take forty-eight hours to clear the federal judge’s desk. He’s running on borrowed time, and he knows it.”

“Where is he going, Marcus?” I asked, my grip tightening on the hospital bed rails, the pain in my side flaring as my adrenaline spiked.

“Our surveillance team tracked him to a private hangar at Teterboro,” Marcus replied. “Vanessa Ward’s private jet is currently fueled and cleared for departure to Switzerland. But they aren't going alone, Clara. Before they left the penthouse, Vanessa’s men cleaned out the vault at the Ward-Whitman corporate office. They have the physical bearer bonds—the ones your father secured thirty years ago as a reserve for the company’s pension fund. Eighty million dollars in untraceable paper.”

I looked at Lawrence. The anger that had been simmering in my chest since the moment I saw Vanessa wearing my necklace turned into an icy, unshakeable resolve.

“They are stealing the pension fund,” I said, my voice steady. “The money that belongs to the dockworkers, the secretaries, the truck drivers who spent their lives building my father’s dream. Marcus, get me my clothes.”

“Clara, you’ve just had surgery,” Lawrence protested, stepping in front of the bed. “You cannot leave this room.”

“I am the sole trustee of Sterling Holdings, Lawrence,” I said, throwing the heavy white blankets off my legs. The hospital gown felt thin, but beneath it, the stitches held firm. “Ethan spent three years trying to prove I was too weak to carry my father’s name. If I let him fly out of this country with those bonds, he wins. Detective Reed, if we intercept them at Teterboro before they board that plane, do you have enough to hold them?”

May you like

Detective Reed looked at me, a slow, appreciative smile tugging at the corner of her lips. “If they are in possession of those physical bearer bonds outside of the corporate vault without a board resolution, it’s grand larceny on a federal level. I won't need forty-eight hours for a warrant. I can arrest them on the tarmac.”

“Then let’s go,” I said, pulling the IV line cleanly from the back of my hand, ignoring the small drop of blood that welled on my skin. “It’s time to show Ethan what happens when you try to steal from a Sterling.”
