Chapter 2: The Liquidation of a Dynasty

The private wing of the ABC Hospital in Santa Fe was guarded like a military bunker. Two of my father’s security teams stood watch at the elevator banks, while another guarded the entrance to my maternity suite.

The doctors had completed the ultrasound two hours ago. My baby boy was safe, his heartbeat strong and rhythmic on the monitor, though the stress had triggered early Braxton Hicks contractions that required strict bed rest and intravenous medication to stabilize. My right ankle was severely sprained, tightly wrapped in a compression brace.

I lay against the crisp white pillows, the steady beep-beep of the heart monitor the only sound in the room. The door pushed open quietly, and my father walked in, carrying a small cup of black coffee. He looked tired, the deep lines around his eyes more pronounced under the harsh fluorescent lights, but the cold, focused precision of his demeanor remained untouched.

"The doctors say you need forty-eight hours of total quiet, Valeria," he said, pulling a chair close to the bed and taking my uninjured hand.

"I don't think I know what quiet feels like anymore, Dad," I whispered, looking down at the clear IV fluids dripping into my arm. "I’m sorry. I’m so sorry I didn't tell you two years ago. I wanted so badly to believe that someone could love me for just... me. Not the Salazar fortune. Not the legacy."

"You have nothing to apologize for, mija," Ricardo said, his voice thick with an ancient, heavy grief. "When your mother died, I built an empire to protect you from the world. I didn't realize that by making myself a giant, I made you feel like you had to hide in the shadows just to find something real. The fault is mine. But the correction... the correction belongs to me too."

He reached into his pocket and placed a sleek, black smartphone on the tray table. The screen was flashing continuously with missed calls, news alerts, and urgent financial notifications.

"What is happening out there?" I asked.

"The Rivas family legacy is currently being erased from the Mexican economy," my father stated flatly, taking a sip of his coffee. "At eight o'clock this morning, Alejandro filed the official default notices with the National Banking and Securities Commission. The ninety million dollars they owed our financial subsidiary was backed by their majority shares in Rivas Logistics. By nine-thirty, those shares were legally transferred to Grupo Salazar."

"And Santiago?"

"He spent the morning frantically calling his political connections," my father smiled, a cold, terrifying expression that lacked any trace of warmth. "He called the Ministry of Infrastructure. He called the head of the central bank. He even tried to reach the Attorney General. What he doesn't understand is that in this country, people do not choose between a falling star and the sun. Everyone hung up on him."

The door opened again, and Alejandro Gomez walked into the room, his expression sharp and professional. He carried a leather binder containing several signed documents.

"Mr. Salazar, Valeria," Alejandro nodded, adjusting his glasses. "The federal judge has just signed the arrest warrants for Santiago Rivas and Beatriz Rivas. The charges include domestic violence, attempted extortion, and fraud related to the falsification of psychiatric records. The police are currently en route to the Lomas de Chapultepec residence."

"Will they try to flee?" I asked, my hand instinctively tightening over my stomach.

"They can try," Alejandro replied with a thin smile. "But Mr. Salazar’s security team has had the perimeter monitored since last night. Their passports have been flagged by immigration control at every airport in the country. They are trapped."

"I want to see it, Alejandro," I said suddenly, sitting up further against the pillows.

My father frowned. "Valeria, you need rest. The baby—"

"The baby needs to know his mother didn't just hide behind her father’s coat," I interrupted, my eyes locking onto his with the exact same unyielding determination that had made Ricardo Salazar a legend. "Santiago told me I was nothing without him. He told me I would leave quietly and that no one would miss me. I want him to look at me when the handcuffs click, Dad. I need him to see exactly who I am."

My father studied my face for a long, tense moment. Slowly, the stern tightness of his jaw relaxed, replaced by a profound, unmistakable look of pride.

"Alejandro," Marcus said, standing up. "Arrange for a private transport. My daughter is going to attend her husband’s departure."
