CHAPTER 4: THE NOTARY OUTPOST

CHAPTER 4: THE NOTARY OUTPOST
The corporate headquarters of Robles & Associates occupied the top floor of a sleek, glass-and-steel building in the heart of the Dallas legal district. It was designed to project absolute power and prestige—polished mahogany walls, white leather chairs, and massive oil paintings of historical Texas judges lining the corridors.
At exactly 1:55 p.m., the heavy glass double doors of the reception area swung open.
Carmen Robles sat in a high-backed leather chair behind a massive conference table in the main boardroom. She was wearing a tailored emerald-green suit, her fingers dripping with heavy gold rings, a long strand of South Sea pearls resting against her chest. Beside her sat Javier, looking immaculate in a custom three-piece charcoal suit, his dark hair combed back, his polished smile perfectly intact. A quiet, nervous-looking notary public sat at the end of the table, a stack of legal transfer deeds resting between them.

"She’s late," Carmen noted coldly, checking her diamond-encrusted Cartier watch. "Javier, did you make sure the girl understood the consequences of another delay?"
"She understands, Mom," Javier said smoothly, adjusting his silk tie. "Sofia is weak. Her mother raised her to be soft. By now, she’s terrified out of her mind. She’ll sign the papers, take her place at the brunch table, and do exactly what she’s told for the next five years."
The boardroom doors didn't just open; they were violently thrown back against the wall with a deafening thud that caused the notary to jump out of his chair.
Alexander Miller walked into the room. He wasn't alone. Behind him came Marcus, four heavily built plainclothes security operators, Julian Cross, and three federal marshals wearing tactical vests under their jackets.
Carmen’s arrogant smile instantly vanished, replaced by a sharp, calculating frown as she stood up from her chair. "What is the meaning of this? This is a private legal office. You can't just burst in here with security guards—"
"Sit down, Carmen," Alexander said. He didn't yell. He walked to the head of the conference table, his gray eyes pinning her to the spot with an intensity that caused the air in the room to turn instantly freezing. He threw a heavy, bound leather portfolio onto the mahogany surface, sliding it straight toward Javier.
Javier frowned, his legal training kicking in as he reached for the folder. "Mr. Miller, I understand you're upset about Sofia visiting her mother last night, but this is a private matter between a husband and wife—"
"Open the folder, Javier," Julian Cross said, stepping forward, his voice dripping with professional malice. "Before the federal marshals behind me decide to execute the arrest warrants for interstate financial fraud and civil rights violations."
Javier’s fingers shook slightly as he opened the portfolio. The first page was a copy of a commercial foreclosure notice from Texas Merchant Bank. The second page was a corporate restructuring document showing that as of 8:30 this morning, Miller Financial Holdings had acquired ninety-eight percent of the Robles family’s commercial debt.
"As of five minutes ago, Javier," Alexander said, leaning forward, resting his palms flat on the table, his face a mask of cold, absolute finality. "I have declared your firm's commercial loans in default. The security keys to this building have been deactivated. The luxury vehicles downstairs are currently being loaded onto tow trucks owned by my asset recovery division. And the mansion in Highland Park? My movers are currently changing the locks and packing your mother’s expensive French furniture into storage crates that will be held until your liquidation bankruptcy is finalized."
"You can't do this!" Carmen shrieked, her voice losing its elegant, polished veneer, turning into a harsh, ugly crow-like rasp. Her heavy gold rings rattled against the table as she slammed her fist down. "We are a prominent legal family! My brother is a judge! You think you can just buy our debt and destroy us? We have resources! We have connections!"
"Your brother was suspended by the Texas State Commission on Judicial Conduct at noon today, Carmen," Julian Cross said calmly, sliding a second sheet of paper across the table. "We delivered a comprehensive forensic file detailing twelve separate cash deposits into his offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands—deposits that perfectly match the liquidation dates of the pre-marital assets you stole from the heiresses in Houston, Midland, and Austin. He won't be helping you today. He’s currently being interviewed by the FBI."
Javier’s face went entirely, translucently white. The polished, arrogant young lawyer looked like a ghost, his hand trembling so violently he could barely hold the edge of the folder. "Mr. Miller... please. There’s been a mistake. We love Sofia. Last night... last night was just a traditional family disagreement. We can talk about this. We can renegotiate the marriage contract—"
"There is no marriage, Javier," Alexander whispered, his voice dropping to a dangerous register that caused the notary public at the end of the table to silently grab his briefcase and sprint out of the room. "The marriage was annulled an hour ago on grounds of severe fraud, physical duress, and attempted murder. You are not her husband. You are just a parasite who forgot who owned the house."
Alexander stepped back, nodding toward the federal marshals.
"Carmen Robles, Javier Robles," the lead marshal stepped forward, pulling heavy iron handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit extortion, wire fraud, and severe domestic assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm. Hands behind your back."

As the iron cuffs clicked around Javier’s manicured wrists, Carmen began to scream, a wild, unhinged sound of pure, desperate rage. She tried to strike one of the marshals, her heavy pearls flying across the room and shattering against the mahogany floor, the white beads rolling into the corners like tiny, broken teeth.
Alexander didn't watch them drag them out. He turned and walked out of the glass building, his long overcoat billowing behind him like the wings of a dark angel, leaving the ruins of the Robles empire behind him in the dirt.
