PART 3: The Empire of Lies

PART 3: The Empire of Lies

Every monitor in the boardroom glowed the same ominous shade of red.
FILES DELETING... 5% COMPLETE.
For one terrifying second, no one moved.
Then instinct took over.
The Chief Information Security Officer lunged toward the conference phone.
"Disconnect every external network!"
Arthur Bennett stood so abruptly that his chair rolled backward.
"Lock down every server."
"Already in progress!"
The cybersecurity director's voice echoed through the room.
"But whoever's doing this has administrator-level access."
All eyes slowly turned toward the empty chair reserved for the company's Chief Financial Officer.
Victor Lang.
He had missed the emergency board meeting, claiming he was attending an investor dinner in New York.
Apparently...
That had been another lie.
I remained seated.
Not because I wasn't frightened.
Because panic had never solved a single business crisis.
My grandfather had taught me that years ago.
"When everyone else starts shouting, Elena... become the quietest person in the room."
I looked toward Margaret.
"How long before the deletion finishes?"
She checked the live report.
"At the current speed..."
"...about twenty-five minutes."
I nodded once.
"Then we still have time."
Daniel stared at me.
"How can you be so calm?"
I finally looked at him.
"Because I prepared for people like Victor long before tonight."
His eyebrows knitted together.
"What do you mean?"
I stood.
"There are systems in this company very few people know about."
Arthur immediately understood.
His eyes widened.
"The Legacy Protocol."
I smiled faintly.
"You remembered."
Daniel frowned.
"What protocol?"
Arthur looked at him with disbelief.
"You were CEO for six years..."
"...and you never asked why the company owned an underground data center?"
Daniel said nothing.
Because he hadn't known.
Victor hadn't known either.
My grandfather believed every family business eventually attracted greed.
He had built safeguards decades earlier.
One of them...
Was hidden beneath the original headquarters.
We hurried toward the executive elevator.
Margaret entered a six-digit security code.
Nothing happened.
She tried again.
Still nothing.
"The elevators are locked."
The cybersecurity director looked up from his tablet.
"They've taken control of the building."
Emergency lights flickered overhead.
Employees began appearing in the hallways.
Confused.
Concerned.
Someone shouted from the reception area.
"The computers just crashed!"
Another voice answered.
"My files are gone!"
Fear spread through forty-eight floors in less than sixty seconds.
I stepped into the center of the hallway.
"Everyone."
The conversations stopped.
Hundreds of eyes turned toward me.
I spoke calmly.
"No one leaves."
"No one touches company computers."
"Our backup systems are activating."
One employee raised her hand nervously.
"Ms. Ward..."
"Are we being hacked?"
I smiled reassuringly.
"They're trying."
"But they chose the wrong company."
A ripple of relieved laughter spread through the crowd.
Leadership isn't about knowing every answer.
It's about giving people confidence while you find them.
Margaret guided us toward an unmarked maintenance corridor.
At the very end stood an old steel door.
No company logo.
No electronic keypad.
Only a brass keyhole.
Daniel looked confused.
"I've never seen this."
"I know."
I reached into my handbag.
Attached to my keyring was an antique silver key.
The only one my grandfather had ever personally handed me.
He called it...
"The key to the future."
The lock clicked softly.
The heavy door swung inward.
Beyond it lay a narrow staircase descending into darkness.
Ten minutes later, we entered a circular underground room unlike anything Daniel had imagined.
Rows of secure servers stretched across climate-controlled chambers.
Backup generators hummed steadily.
Wall-sized monitors displayed live network activity.
Only three people worked there.
All of them over sixty years old.
All of them had served beside my grandfather.
One elderly technician smiled the moment he saw me.
"Miss Elena."
"It has been a long time."
"It has."
I hugged him warmly.
"Good to see you, Samuel."
Daniel whispered,
"You know these people?"
Samuel laughed.
"We've known her since she was twelve."
Another technician looked toward the monitors.
"They've started deleting public servers."
I nodded.
"Activate Legacy Protocol."
Without hesitation, Samuel inserted another physical key into a secure console.
Every monitor changed instantly.
A new message appeared.
PRIMARY SYSTEM OVERRIDDEN
LEGACY ARCHIVE ACTIVE
The deletion percentage froze at 18%.
Then...
Began moving backward.
17%.
16%.
15%.
Daniel stared in disbelief.
"They're recovering the files."
Samuel smiled proudly.
"They never actually touched the originals."
Meanwhile, seventy miles away...
Victor Lang cursed loudly inside a rented warehouse.
"What happened?"
His laptop displayed endless warning messages.
His hired hacker shook his head.
"I don't understand."
"The data disappeared."
Victor slammed his fist onto the table.
"It can't disappear."
"It just did."
The hacker swallowed nervously.
"They've switched to an offline archive."
Victor's face drained of color.
"The Legacy servers..."
He whispered.
"I thought those were dismantled years ago."
"They weren't."
Someone else answered from behind him.
Victor spun around.
Three FBI agents stood inside the warehouse.
Weapons drawn.
Special Agent Daniel Brooks stepped forward.
"No one move."
Victor slowly raised his hands.
The hacker attempted to run.
He made it exactly three steps before another agent tackled him to the concrete floor.
Victor closed his eyes.
"It's over."
Brooks replied quietly.
"It is now."
Back at headquarters, the crisis slowly came under control.
Every deleted file had been restored.
Every server secured.
Every employee returned to work.
Applause erupted throughout the operations center.
One young analyst wiped away tears.
"I thought we'd lost everything."
Samuel smiled kindly.
"My dear..."
He patted the massive server cabinet.
"This company survived three recessions."
"Two cyberattacks."
"One fire."
"And an attempted hostile takeover."
"We've learned to prepare."
Just as relief began settling over the room, Margaret received another encrypted message.
She frowned.
"This came from federal investigators."
She opened the attachment.
A spreadsheet appeared.
Dozens of offshore accounts.
Corporate transfers.
Hidden beneficiaries.
Then one name caught my attention.
Chloe Bennett Consulting LLC
I looked up.
"Chloe?"
Margaret nodded slowly.
"According to federal investigators..."
"...over thirty million dollars passed through shell companies connected to her."
Daniel stepped backward.
"No."
"That's impossible."
He grabbed the report.
"She owns a fashion consulting business."
Margaret remained calm.
"So we believed."
Daniel shook his head repeatedly.
"She wouldn't..."
I interrupted quietly.
"How long have you known her?"
He hesitated.
"Two years."
"When did the missing money first appear?"
Margaret answered.
"Almost exactly..."
"...two years ago."
The realization struck him like a physical blow.
His knees nearly gave way.
Before anyone could speak again, another investigator entered carrying additional evidence.
"We searched Victor Lang's office."
He placed a sealed evidence bag on the table.
Inside was a small notebook.
Every page contained handwritten initials.
Dates.
Payments.
Bribes.
Beside several entries appeared two letters.
P.C.
Arthur frowned.
"Patricia Cross."
Another page listed luxury purchases.
Diamond jewelry.
European vacations.
Private jets.
All paid through fake consulting contracts.
Daniel whispered,
"My mother..."
No one answered.
Because the evidence already had.
That evening, federal agents executed simultaneous search warrants.
Victor Lang's mansion.
Chloe's downtown penthouse.
Patricia's private residence.
News helicopters circled overhead as luxury homes became crime scenes.
Television stations interrupted programming once again.
Employees gathered around screens throughout headquarters.
Every headline seemed more unbelievable than the last.
CEO'S FIANCÉE LINKED TO MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD
CFO ARRESTED IN CORPORATE EMBEZZLEMENT CASE
BOARD CHAIR CONFIRMS INTERNAL INVESTIGATION CONTINUES
Yet despite everything unfolding around us...
One question still remained unanswered.
Why?
Why had Chloe targeted Daniel?
Why had Victor risked everything?
Why had Patricia welcomed Chloe into the family so quickly?
The answer arrived before midnight.
Special Agent Brooks requested an emergency video conference.
His expression was unusually grim.
"We've completed Chloe's background investigation."
He displayed her personnel file.
Then...
A second identity appeared beside it.
Different hair.
Different name.
Different passport.
My heartbeat quickened.
"Who is she?"
Brooks inhaled slowly.
"Her legal name isn't Chloe Bennett."
The room became silent.
"Her real name is..."
He clicked the next slide.
Claire Lang.
Daniel frowned.
"Lang?"
Brooks nodded.
"Victor Lang's daughter."
No one spoke.
Daniel simply stared at the screen.
The woman he planned to marry...
Had been working with her own father from the very beginning.
Their relationship.
Their engagement.
Every smile.
Every kiss.
Every promise.
Every word.
Had all been part of a carefully planned scheme to gain unlimited access to the company.
Daniel slowly lowered himself into a chair.
"I destroyed my marriage..."
He whispered hoarsely.
"...for a con artist."
Before anyone could respond, Brooks' phone rang.
He answered immediately.
His expression changed within seconds.
He looked straight at me.
"Ms. Ward..."
"We have another problem."
"What is it?"
He paused.
"Our agents searched your grandfather's private estate tonight."
My heart tightened.
"And?"
"They found a hidden room behind the library."
He swallowed.
"It wasn't empty."
"What was inside?"
Brooks looked directly into my eyes.
"A handwritten journal."
"It belongs to your grandfather."
He hesitated one final time.
