Chapter 2: The Audit of the Empire

The freezing rain stopped feeling cold the moment Lucas stepped between me and the grand oak doors of my mother’s house.

The security guards he brought didn't look like local rent-a-cops; they moved with the silent, lethal precision of high-tier corporate security. Two of them immediately stood at the base of the steps, while a third—a towering man with a scarred jaw—stepped forward with a massive black umbrella, shielding Lucas and me from the downpour.

My mother, Beatrice, was gripping the gold-plated door handle so tightly her knuckles were white. Vanessa’s mouth was open, her silk pajamas suddenly looking ridiculous under the bright, sweeping high-beams of the three armored SUVs idling in her driveway.

"Lucas?" Vanessa stammered, her voice cracking as she took a step back into the warmth of the foyer. "What... what is this? What joke are you playing? Why are you dressed like that?"

Lucas didn't answer her. He didn't even look at her. He knelt down in the mud, completely disregarding the pristine fabric of his Tom Ford suit, and gently gathered the wet clothes that had spilled from my battered suitcase. He picked up the framed wedding photo Vanessa had dropped. The glass was shattered, but his face beneath the cracks remained steady.

He stood up, handed the ruined frame to the guard with the umbrella, and wrapped his dry, cashmere-clad arm around my shivering shoulders.

"Elena," he murmured against my hair, his voice a low, soothing anchor. "I told you not to come here alone. I told you I would handle them."

"I thought... I thought I could appeal to whatever humanity she had left after Dad died," I whispered, my teeth chattering as blood from my scraped palm stained his pristine white shirt cuff.

Lucas looked down at my bleeding hands. The warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by an icy, calculated focus that I had never seen during our two years in our tiny apartment over the repair shop.

He turned his head toward the door.

"Beatrice," Lucas said, his voice dropping into a register that made the ambient noise of the storm disappear. "You have exactly ten minutes to pack your personal belongings and vacate these premises."

My mother let out a shrill, hysterical laugh, stepping out onto the porch. "Vacate? Have you lost your mind, you garage rat? This is the Vance Estate! My late husband built this house with his own blood and sweat. The deed is in his company's name, and as of nine days ago, I am the majority shareholder of Vance Enterprises. You are trespassing on private property!"

Lucas pulled a sleek leather document holder from the inside pocket of his coat. He didn't hand it to her. He handed it to the scarred security guard, who marched up the steps and held it open under my mother’s nose.

"Your husband built an empire, Beatrice, but he built it on a foundation of high-interest corporate debt," Lucas stated, stepping up the stone stairs with me tucked securely under his arm. "For the last five years, Vance Enterprises has survived entirely on capital injections from an anonymous private equity firm based in Chicago. That firm is Hale Global. I am the sole owner of Hale Global."

Vanessa pushed past my mother, her eyes wild with panic. "You're lying! You work at Miller's Auto Repair! I've seen you covered in grease! I've smelled the oil on your skin!"

"I own Miller's Auto Repair," Lucas replied smoothly, stopping on the top step, completely dominating the doorway. "I own the land it sits on, and I own the logistics company that supplies it. I spend my mornings there because machines don't lie, they don't conspire, and they don't abuse my wife. But my afternoons belong to the boardrooms you've spent your entire life trying to buy your way into."

He looked at his watch.

"Nine minutes, Beatrice. If you are not out of this foyer by then, my security team will physically remove you, and I will press formal charges for the physical assault of my wife on my property. The security cameras on the porch gates have recorded everything."

My mother looked at the large screen of the guard's tablet, which was already looping the high-definition footage of her pushing me down the stone stairs. Her face went from pale to a toxic, mottled purple.

"Elena!" she screamed, pointing a manicured finger at me. "You did this! You brought this predator into our family to ruin your father’s memory!"

"Dad knew exactly who Lucas was," I said, my voice finally finding its strength as I stood beside my husband. "Why do you think he agreed to give me away at our wedding without a single protest? He knew Lucas was the only thing keeping your lifestyle afloat. He begged Lucas to protect me from you two."

Vanessa began to cry, a sharp, ugly sound as she realized the black SUVs weren't leaving. "Mom, do something! Call the lawyers! Call Arthur’s old friends at the bank!"

"The banks are currently freezing the Vance corporate accounts, Vanessa," Lucas added, his voice entirely devoid of pity. "Your father's estate is bankrupt. The only asset left with any real value is the voting stock, which was automatically transferred to Hale Global forty-eight hours ago due to a collateral default your mother signed off on last month to pay for your wedding boutique line."

He turned to his lead guard. "Michael, begin the clearance. Anything that isn't their clothes stays in the house. Especially the jewelry bought with Vance corporate credit."
